The same fate hit deepl. What most english users don't know is that translation from english to another language was always at best - horrible and not usable without much manual effort. The same goes the other way around when you are writing technical documents.

Deepl however - 7-8 or more years ago was bright star - i do not say this lightly but their translation (i can only vouch for german<->english) was out of this world in comparison to everything else like google translate, yahoo or whatever.

It was basically so good - i just kept writing in english even though its not my first language but its easier for technical documentation and i use it to translate back to german instead of doing it the other way around.

But then, when the first mass hysteria of chatgpt 1 etc hits - it good worse fast - nowadays - it can not do any good translation service at all - it is far worse than what the competition offered 7-8 years ago! It makes no sense a lot of times.

MacNCheese23··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
Yeah I was doing that at the beginning of this year with voice samples locally from hollywood-stars with Qwen3-TTS.

It took like 1min - capture something from a youtube or video and put in your own text. It worked also really good for a german test.

Made a voice message for my wife from one of our favorite actors, telling here how nice it would be to make some breakfast :D

As an engineer i would never think that complicated - morse code?

Couldn't it be just binary

11000

Which is - to everyones surprise - 24 as in hours.

MacNCheese23··on Reverse-engineering the 1998 Ultima Online demo server
As the final and last surviving dev of eqclassic I found this interesting, but expected more story meat on how tools were used and the overall process. Nevertheless, a nice read.

I didn't have an LLM back then but also at least some debug symbols from a powerpc binary that was 3 years in the future, it helped a bit.

Some of your file names seem eerily familiar like packet_handler and entitylist :D

The final frontier is basically having a perfect netcode before polishing up the rest, but that was already a waste of a couple 100h so far.

I only glanced over the source a bit, but it does not seem like some reliably mechanic on top is used because its TCP all the way down? Interesting... if thats the case - it seems like a "slow" choice for an MMO back then.

There are plenty proof of concepts already done, for example in Skyrim

MacNCheese23··on I used AI-powered calorie counting apps, and they were even worse than expected
This is without a doubt the worst App I installed in the last years. It is predatory and has the worst user experience I have ever seen. I'm serious.

It begins with that i haven't even tried out anything, before logging in - that the google store popup comes up that I should rate the App - on the same screen you even tell users please rate us - HOW?? HOW should i rate something now that i havent even used yet.

Then, like in the 20th century i have to supply an e-mail/password and wait for a OTP instead of just using the Google EcoSystem and let me login with my existing Google Account.

After that, i went through at least 10 pages of bullshit were I have to give my information, weight/height/metabolic rate etc - even adjusting the calorie deficit didnt work outright if it is 0 and you want to put a minus before it it just goes away. You first have to enter a postive > 0 value to be able to ad a Minus.

Mind you, i just want to see what that App is about what can it do - i don't want to enter and click next next for a gazillion informations first after being annoyed by "please rate us".

Then, after completing the "setup" i get a fullscreen overlay to annoy me about PREMIUM membership - AGAIN I HAVE NOT USED ONE SINGLE FUNCTION OF YOUR APP YET.

But not enough, I want to try it out with a photo from my meal today and on the camera lense screen it annoys me again with PREMIUM!!! You can only do 3 Photos a day. Dude your app is so predatory its just trash.

Then i select the photo from the gallery and have to CROP it??? Its a fullscreen picture of just the meal - nothing else and you annoy me with cropping it?

Then, the actual function - while it recognized my meal it was off by the calorie count and weight by a factor of 2. The same picture, for free, google gemini flash recognized correctly too and gave an accurate display of average calories (it approx. 450g). I added the exact weight to gemini afterwards to have the correct estimation and it gave me the real value.

I tried to do the same in your app, instead of 300g i edited the entry and choose 600g. And clicked save. I was puzzled that nothing changed. Then i saw the portion size went from 1 to 0.5 - just by me changing from 300g to 600g. What a stupid user experience. So i had to change the weight AND return back the portion size to 1.

Again, everything your App does apart from massively annoying users, gemini and chatgpt can do better for free.

MacNCheese23··on A kernel developer plays with Home Assistant
I don't really get HA. It seems oversized for what most people need for their own home automation. Maybe I'm just jaded because my house is fully KNX wired, but the only "addon" I need is NodeRed for some Dashboard and Integrations of ESPs that are just for additional monitoring. It runs in a lonely docker container just fine and does not need a million dependencies.

Then again, I also don't understand why people buy every "smart"/cloud based device and try to glue everything together - when the hardware fails most likely the vendor does not exist or no longer supports it anymore and then you start all over again.

MacNCheese23··on Show HN: MMORPG prototype inspired by World of Warcraft
Do i see this correctly, TCP-based Websocket with JSON messages that are parsed?

That is very much removed from any MMORPG type of communication.

One of the hardest parts of a client/server MMO architecture is the network layer, which uses a lossless/retry/fault-prove UDP-based protocol. Everything else sits on top. Luckily, there are tons of sample libraries by now, I suggest peeking at the leaked SW Online sony code which includes the source for their implementation.

MacNCheese23··on F-Zero courses from a dead Nintendo satellite service restored using VHS and AI
For me this isnt that much "wow" - maybe for younger people? I mean 1995-96 is already pretty late for the Satellaview and SNES.

96 was already the time i played MMOs on my PC like Meridian 59 with real multiplayer and downloaded from the internet using a 14k/28k/56k modem in that order.

MacNCheese23··on AMD Reveals Next-Gen Desktop Processors for Extreme PC Gaming
Right, the topic "Extreme PC Gaming" - PC - PC - PC - yeah just for you spelled again PC - is extremely misleading - next time they should include "Not Overpriced" that people like you know their beloved Hardware isnt meant.
