M_Grey··on The relationship between social media use and well-being
>I don't know if I agree that the best arguments result in agreement between opponents.

They don't end in agreement, they begin with cooperation; you might not resolve the argument, or your position might prevail, or even change. As you say, there is no argument to be had in some cases, there is no reason. I'm talking about a methodology, rather than an outcome; you can still disagree.

That said, in the case of something like the slave and their master, I'd suggest that an argument is pointless in any case; what's needed is a fight (in the literal sense).

M_Grey··on DoorDash to pay $5m to settle class-action lawsuit over independent contractors
$125 isn't even that bad, as class actions go... it really is a wildly crooked system.
M_Grey··on The relationship between social media use and well-being
First of all, thank you, I really appreciate your kind words.

Beyond that, I agree utterly about the notion that argument is too often seen as a sport or a "winning" game. The best arguments IMO are ones in which both parties are reaching out to each other, trying to make a point or communicate some idea. It's a contest, but it's also cooperative when everything goes well.

I think about the Wright Brothers, who used the old rhetorical trick of, when they reached an impasse, switching positions in an argument. That's the way to do it! You can be hugely invested in a position, but still be willing to challenge it.

M_Grey··on Removing Home Internet Is the Most Productive Thing I've Done
I would be utterly shocked if most of the big ones didn't, and I'd be even more shocked if they (along with tobacco companies) had helped to develop techniques now taken for granted in the digital world.
M_Grey··on Removing Home Internet Is the Most Productive Thing I've Done
I think the problem is that apparently many people default to some level of potential "internetaholicity"; it explains the insane success of something like FB after all. People take time to recognize the various Skinner Boxes and develop the kind of sophistication so many on a site like HN take for granted. MMORPG's, Mobile F2P Skinner Boxes, and messaging programs really are going right to the core of human behavior.

How many of us didn't at least go through a phase of abusive use around the internet, or games, or something like that? When you add that having an FB account and the like is often seen as ultimately normal, it starts to add a lot of pressure for some people. As someone who has always hated something like FB, it's been disturbing to see it sink hooks into so many.

That said, I saw it coming because when I was a teenager I was hooked on mIrc for a while!

SO no... don't cut your tether, you're either naturally immune or like me developed an immune system. You should recognize though, that plenty of people aren't going to have such a successful outcome playing with that particular fire.

You believe that a solution exists, although you also believe that there is no need for one, but if there was "technology" would be that solution. Is that about right?
M_Grey··on Why the viral United Airlines video kept getting deleted from Reddit
I think the important takeaway for everyone involved is, "...For all of the good it did them."

Will people with a scrap of power never learn? "Any fact that needs to be disclosed should be put out now or as quickly as possible, because otherwise the bleeding will not end." (Henry Kissinger)

M_Grey··on The relationship between social media use and well-being
This may sound bizarre, but I used to have that same problem... and it's actually arguing on the internet that made me realize I needed to lose the anger, lose the need to control, and... then I spent a couple of years really making an effort. If you're already at the point of recognizing what you've described about yourself, you've done the hardest part, and now you just need to build new habits.

That said, avoiding obvious minefields like FB seems like a wise choice too.

M_Grey··on The relationship between social media use and well-being
I don't understand the appeal of FB; we have other means to be connected with the people we care about. I've never understood the appeal of broadcasting yourself to the entire planet either... it's bizarre.
M_Grey··on Symantec found evidence of Longhorn against 40 targets spread in 16 countries
Seriously, it's not just teens either, it's many college students too. In general, anyone who didn't have to buy their own stuff has a bit less respect for it, and while that doesn't describe all teens or college students, it describes a huge number of them; a rich target pool.

I remember in the early days of exploitative XDCC botting, practically all of the most exploited ip ranges were scholastic; new devices each semester, often given to teens as a present.

You seem to think that I:

1.) Believe a solution still exists

2.) Believe that Australia of all the small populations on Earth would somehow matter if such a solution existed (no offense Australia, you matter in general)

3.) Believe that "thought" matters at this point. You might as well be telling people marching to the gallows to cheer up, nothing good can come of being all depressed. You might be right, but at least stop pretending that it's going to change the actual outcome.

M_Grey··on Great Barrier Reef at 'terminal stage'
I'm doing my part, no kids, and I won't be having any. Unfortunately human nature isn't going to change, and we're not going to get out of this one with our civilization intact; we're probably cooked.

It might be for the elite, or it might be literal window dressing; they did build an amusement park that appears to be largely for show after all.

Possible salient point: Was her picture on the cover?

...And yet she's a good comparison when looking at Bansky... while Selena Gomez is a Disney product of no great note.
M_Grey··on Graffiti 'dying out' as kids dump spray cans for Instagram, Twitter etc.
That's certainly possible, but you have to consider that comparing Selena and Banksy is apt, while comparing Selena Gomez and an underground graffiti artist would be... bizarre.

Oh god no... Selena Quintanilla.

was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, actress, and fashion designer. Called the Queen of Tejano music, her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine named her the "top Latin artist of the '90s" and the "best selling Latin artist of the decade". Media outlets called her the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices.[a] She also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all-time and is credited for catapulting a music genre into the mainstream market.[6][7]

The upside at least there, is that there is some warning; you could stick everything you care about into a Faraday cage. Power lines... not so much.
M_Grey··on Snowden: NSA just lost control of its Top Secret arsenal of digital weapons
This is a discussion about the Russian government, it doesn't really have much to do with Russian people in general.

That is what the person I replied to actually said, and the comment I was clearly referring to; the point being of course, that a discussion of the Russian government has no more to do with the Russian people than the Russian government does.

If you have that kind of concern for your data, there are solutions which involve actual nuclear bunkers... that would do the trick.

The other problem is that it assumes that divorce is a bad outcome to be avoided, while a long marriage must be successful and happy; neither are axiomatic.

Did you reply to the correct person? I never said anything about discrimination, nor did the person I was replying to.

I truly don't care; the notion that somehow fucking someone makes you a bad person, while fucking an economy or a nation doesn't, never sat well with me.

We'll be very lucky if in 20 years, the world is still so free and functional as it is now... and I'm not trying to talk up the state of the world today.
M_Grey··on Is Matter Conscious?
Sure, and I'm for limitless sharing of feelings, but in the context of, "Here are my feelings on 'X'."
M_Grey··on 'My Airbnb flat was turned into a pop-up brothel'
I specifically am for legalization of prostitution.

So... time to rethink your position; I'd be absolutely furious in this guy's position, and "The risk is incredibly low," would frankly piss me off even more. Your argument is about as weak as someone smoking a ton of pot in someone's house, then bitching about prohibition. I'm against prohibition, and also against you stinking up my house.

If you try to pigeonhole all of the people you disagree with, you will turn into a caricature no less absurd than the ones you're trying to create.

M_Grey··on 'My Airbnb flat was turned into a pop-up brothel'
...It's an insignificant risk that a reasonable person renting their home under AirBnB contract should neither expect, nor tolerate. As to the rest, I've talked about the other reasonable concerns a homeowner might have in other parts of this thread.
