Conscious is hard to say, partly because we can't define it either, so it means something different for you and me.
Our brain actually uses many different functions for all of these things. Intelligence is incredibly complex.
But also, you don't need all of these to have real intelligence. People can problem solve without memory, since those are different things. People can intelligently problem-solve without a task.
And working towards long-term goals is something we actually take decades to learn. And many fail there as well.
I wouldn't be surprised if, just like in our brain, we'll start adding other modalities that improve memory, planning, etc etc. Seems that they started doing this with the vision update in GPT-4.
I wouldn't be surprised if these LLMs really become the backbone of the AGI. But this is science– You don't really know what'll work until you do it.
No-one knows. But I sure would trust the scientist leading the endeavor more than a business person that has interest in saying the opposite to avoid immediate regulations.
I can't say if this will work, but I think the message is pretty clear. No more random product launches like the GPT store, but rather focus on the core: building the AI, testing it and launching when it's safe.
To be honest, I've also found them getting too diluted in offerings. Why not let other startups focus on those things? Let Openai focus on the core models and give tools to others to build/finetune things. They can be the infrastructure of the AI world, they don't need to create every product.
Again, we will only know in the future if this is the right decision. But there is a strong case to be made here, especially with the company's original mission and non-profit status.
I think there is an argument to be made that not every powerful LLM should be open source. But yes- maybe we’re worried about nothing. On the other hand, these tools can easily spread misinformation, increase animosity, etc, Even in todays world.
I come from the medical field, and we make risk-analyses there to dictate how strict we need to tests things before we release it in the wild. None of this exists for AI (yet).
I do think that focus on alignment is many times more important than chatgpt stores for humanity though.
The first leads to attractong world-class talent that can do the second. Until you go off the rails and the second kicks you out it seems.
I think it’s also fair Sam starts something new with a for profit focus of the get-go.
They started as a non-profit ffs.
People that have lost those abilities still have human level of intelligence.
Do you have any data that shows that we’ll plateau any time soon?
Because if this trend continues, we’ll have superhuman levels of compute within 5 years.
Testing with GPT-4 showed that they were clearly capable of knowingly lying.
No lol: https://www.foxnews.com/media/elon-musk-hints-at-lawsuit-aga...
I wouldn't be surprised if the leadership direction of sam is related to the ousting.
My feeling is that he's a phenomenal entrepreneur/CEO, but he seems to completely go against the original mission. And the board has no financial interest in openai, but they do have to follow the premise on which the company was created (which they referenced).
Ilya siding with the board and the board having no financial interests leads me to think that Sam was hiding things/making decisions that kept leading the org away from its initial mission.
We'll probably learn in the future what really happened.
Page 15. GPT-4 is already capable of willingly lying to and manipulating people already to execute specific tasks.
Now it’s clearly, if you really need perf you get an M3 max.
To be fair– While 8GB is annoying– I've bought the M1 MacBook Air when it came out and it's remarkably resilient. I've only had it freeze a few times due to too little RAM.
I've also been using many different programs. I just have to be a tad mindful about closing tabs (especially Google tabs) and programs.
More often than not, you’d want your own charge controller anyway to for example run at a lower voltage (different series). At least for the Model S/X modules. The 3/Y modules are a little bit trickier to re-use because they are higher-voltage and not as modular.
He’s omitted from the second author.
I do believe they believe they have something nobel-prize worthy.
They offered to help with replication in other labs, which is a good sign.
Could still be measurement error, we just need to wait until it gets replicated.
Am I missing something?
Statins have a phenomenal improvement in outcome on cardiovascular disease. So do many cancer drugs nowadays. Diabetes also has great improvement with good treatment.
Removing these would reduce life expectancy drastically.
Ultrasound is still a mechanical force that can be focussed in a specific area to open a part of the Blood Brain Barrier.
Wifi and bluetooth are electromagnetic, and interact less with the brain. Their transmission power is also extremely low. So they don’t do much.
Super powerful MRI scanners (3T or more) can heat up the body a little bit with electromagnetic waves, but still no focal damage or anything.
Trauma however, or certain diseases can open the barrier.
The H Pylori paper also didn't get published anywhere, no-one believed it. Nobel prize many years later.
Really interested in following this further.
On top of that, think about how we treat animals where we have billions of intelligent animals (cows, pigs) that we breed to butcher and eat. Just because they are tasty, and we tell ourselves they are less worthy because of their lesser intelligence and consciousness.
I sure hope that AI doesn't behave like us. I have no idea what will happen and what the odds are, but I do think it's the most dangerous experiment we have ever run.
