MBCook··on Processing in Memory: DRAM Is About to Do Math
So they built a very specific operation into the RAM. This RAM would only be useful for AI, otherwise the transistors are just wasted.

And if we fund a different set of operations actually work better for AI you can’t adjust to that either.

Seems extremely limited. But otherwise wouldn’t you just end up with something like a massive number of tiny microcontrollers each accessing a set of memory? The Transputer again.

MBCook··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
I know that’s how it works. How could they possibly estimate that in this specific case.
MBCook··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
What would that even be in a case like this?

> Bring full, conformant Vulkan to Apple platforms, disproving the myth that Vulkan isn’t suitable for Apple hardware.

Did people actually claim that? I don’t remember it but I don’t follow Vulkan and would stop reading subthreads when they turned towards “Apple should just use Vulkan”.

If Vulkan was designed to be vendor neutral (it was) it seems very unlikely it would be unimplementable by Apple if they wanted.

MBCook··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
Seems like once they got past that things weren’t too bad. Could have been way more incompatibilities waiting on the other side.
MBCook··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
Amazing progress as usual. It’s been fun watching just how much a few people can accomplish over the last few years despite working on sometimes unstable sand.

MBCook··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
This is why I generally try to avoid it and just call it “Eastern“ or “Eastern US“ if talking with someone who might not be in the US.

Which is annoying.

MBCook··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
But that means your different chips all have different sets of weights and are different generations.

If none of that is baked into the chip as now then all the chips are running the latest weights every time.

Even if you could ignore the stuff built into the chip when the time came, at that point you just wasted money on silicon that’s useless in 2-3 months.

Apple would want to make something non-invasive. I don’t think this is non-invasive. It looks a lot like the existing CGMs, but it does more.
MBCook··on One corner of China’s internet is insisting that the Tang Dynasty never existed
How could it be healthy to not even agree on the most basic facts of history like whether hundreds of years actually happened or the shape of the earth?
MBCook··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
If they were moved to plain old icloud.com, I could absolutely see a bunch of companies starting to filter out all icloud.com email addresses to avoid private relay. Either just because they’re jerks or from bounce issues.

Keeping it on a subdomain fixes that problem, to some degree. If the user is named ffjvhtu57325cjdjvg501a2@icloud.com no one is going to think that’s a real address. It’s very obviously a private one. So it’s not like they were “camouflaged.“

It’s a little odd they’re switching the subdomain though.

MBCook··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
They are the kind of single core right now, so they’re the most interesting comparison.

Do you want to compare to Intel/AMD? If these are destined for phones that’s not a useful comparison by your metric.

MBCook··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
Good question.

I’m sure Apple’s chips could do better in single core if they were willing to push the power envelope way higher too.

Multi-core is easy to beat, just add more cores until you win. There were already chips that beat the M series just by having way more threads/cores.

So to do this the attacker has to compromise the update servers at $CAR_COMPANY?
MBCook··on Malware infects Android-based automotive head unit firmware
Android Automotive is the infotainment system’s OS and runs fully without a phone.

Android Auto is the Google equivalent of CarPlay and runs on your phone.

It’s easy to confuse. Like watching Apple TV on your Apple TV in Apple’s TV app.

MBCook··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
That’s semantics. For all intents and purposes he destroyed it, no different than if he stomped on the phone or deleted all the files traditionally.

I don’t think a judge would care about splitting that hair.

MBCook··on Windows brings out the Rorschach test in everyone (2003)
It doesn’t matter if Microsoft cares about offending people. If some executive is not going to buy 2 million licenses of Windows because they are personally offended by the font used somewhere, then Microsoft is gonna change it.

In this case, it’s pure business.

MBCook··on Windows brings out the Rorschach test in everyone (2003)
I think they mean it was someone in the government who complained and that complaint went to their IT department, and it was the poor IT department who had to complain to Microsoft.

Or something like that. Basically, the person from the government who contacted them was the sad messenger and not the original complainer.
