Lutzb··on FreeBSD at 30: Its secrets to success
The switch kernel / Horizon/NX is not based on FreeBSD. This has been debunked over and over. The wikipedia list is not correct in that regard.

Lutzb··on Reddit is removing moderators that protest by taking their communities private
Fully agree:

First exempt personal paid premium accounts from the api limitations & ads. Then the goal is to benefit from the already existing and thriving 3rd party app ecosystem. Make your API serve ads in non-premium API calls and profit share the ad revenue with 3rd party app developers. Optionally allow 3rd party apps to remove ads (paid API calls) and show their own ads, however make your ads more attractive & lucrative for 3rd party developers.

In the future I would also like to see that subreddits can gain control of the ads shown in their subreddits (subreddits already understand their audience far better than reddit corporate ever will). Then eventually profit share with moderator teams and content submitter, basically copy youtubes model to incentivize content submitters & good moderation.

Lutzb··on Bard now open to use
Not working in Germany.
Lutzb··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Not really interesting per se, but useful when dealing with large recursive and sparse archives:

A python script that recursively searches through zipped files within zip files (within zip files...) to find files by name and content. The goal was not to unzip the recursive structure to the file system, since the unzipped files contained hundreds gigabytes of sparse data each. Instead it works directly on the file stream and keeps the memory requirements constant.

Lutzb··on Tesla removes parking sensors, the results are predictably terrible
I read a while ago that these cars are pretty much unobtainable. Can someone shed some light as to why this is? The premise of the car seems like it would sell very well.

Lutzb··on Could UFOs be alien probes? A new 2023 Harvard study explores it [pdf]
I always thought this was the most likely explanation.

Advanced civilization builds self-replicating probes, probes spread out over the whole galaxy. Stationed in every system to catalog signs of life evolving.

Lutzb··on Best printer 2023: just buy this Brother laser printer everyone has, it’s fine
I am still running a HL-5250 DN which was released around 2005. Recently I've replaced the drum with an aftermarket part.

The only thing the irks me is the standby power consumption ~20W.

Lutzb··on SimCity launched a decade ago, and it was so disastrous it killed the series
All I want is Sim City 2000 for mobile. I know it will not happen. Without microtransactions there is no way it will ever get green lighted by EA.
Lutzb··on Sony's Legal Attack on Quad9, Censorship, and Freedom of Speech
Using them since they started. No issues.

Lutzb··on Musk’s takeover turbocharged VC Twitter usage
LinkedIn is a strange place indeed. People interacting like overexcited toddlers, banalities are shared like life-changing epiphanies, people are congratulating themselves on jobs well-done.

I considered writing a short story about an alien race that prepares for first contact with earth solely from learning about humans on LinkedIn.

Lutzb··on IBM Research's Vela Is an AI Supercomputer in the Cloud
I gave it a whirl some time ago. The answer is: extremely well. Blog post incoming
Lutzb··on China leads the quest for small modular nuclear reactors–will the world follow?

The generation of electricity from a typical 1,000-megawatt nuclear power station, which would supply the needs of more than a million people, produces only three cubic metres of vitrified high-level waste per year.
High level waste makes around 3% of radioactive waste in a typical power plant.

Lutzb··on Dropzone and IK+ Creator Archer Maclean Has Passed Away
It was IK+ on the Amiga for me. Such chaotic gameplay, so many eastereggs (press T). The soundtrack and the digitized fighting noises. I miss that time.
Lutzb··on The strange case of BeOS, SRS and the silent Power Mac 6500
You could be me :) I ran an Athlon 700 with BeOS as daily driver. So much goodness, such a glimpse of a future that never was.

IIRC, the leaked dan0 had a fix for this behaviour.

Lutzb··on Paul Le Roux is Satoshi?
Most likely they know who paid for the address. I need to check if payment via credit card was an option in 2009 or SEPA only.

IIRC, the gmx.com address was registered again later by someone else.

Lutzb··on Paul Le Roux is Satoshi?
The interesting thing is that satoshi was using a gmx.com address, emphasis on the .com. Those were only available to paying customers of GMX.de.
Lutzb··on Getting a Psion 5 palmtop from 1997 online via PPP (and a Raspberry Pi)
I just wish the screen had a little more contrast. Besides that, the productivity was awesome.

Later I switched to a Nokia 9210 Communicator (Nokia Series 80), basically a Psion 5 with networking and phone integration and a nice screen.

My living-the-future-moment was in the early 2000s sitting in car on the phone, then opening the phone, automatically switching to speakerphone and loading a spreadsheet to check some data. Later I emailed the sheet to a colleague and send the sheet as a fax from the phone to a customer. All from a single device.

Lutzb··on The “Oscar movie” is dying

Lutzb··on Autonomous trucking upstart Embark has gone from $5B+ to basically worthless
These do exists e.g. Nuremberg in Germany has an autonomous subway since 2013.
Lutzb··on Tesla Semi, a Deep Dive
I worked for a company that builds electric trucks and that have also shown battery trailers with cargo space. The engineers told me that the coupling of the battery on the trailer with the semi caused them a lot of worries. High voltage/amperage combined with mechanical stress and failure scenarios (failing mechanical coupling of the trailer, destroying the battery connection).

However it seems like the European companies heading this way.

Lutzb··on Guido van Rossum: Python and the Future of Programming – Lex Fridman Podcast
Somewhere I read a quote that has stuck with me: Python is not the number one language in any aspect, but it is often the second best language.

This sums it up very nicely, I think. Without switching a language I can automate deployments, do machine learning tasks, implement ideas quickly, create backends, interface with most C libs easily and query apis.
