Lucadg··on My First Impressions of Web3
Great article.

About NFTs: we tend to think they somehow need an image to make sense, while the "own the NFT to own the image" is both wrong and just one specific use case out of many. I find it useful to think about NFTs as "internet native property titles" which do not embed "law enforcement".

See it this way: if you own a house, you own a property title which proves it. In case someone squats your house and the law enforcement does not help you get it back (e.g. due to corruption or slow legal system), it's just a useless piece of paper.

Same with NFTs. Some use cases have enforcement embedded (e.g. ENS domains) and bear no risk, some don't (OpenSea minted image NFTs) and carry some risk from centralized entities (the same risk we have in 100% of Web2 applications btw)

Enforcement often happens at the app layer, even if the NFT image can be compromised. E.g. an NFT which gives you access to a walled web page will still work even if the image is compromised.

Lucadg··on Don't Waste the Good Days
I did the contrary. Completely wasted away my young years and money in endless world travels. Couldn't be happier of my decision. It's very subjective tough, and highly dependent on your risk tolerance.
Lucadg··on What is a Bitcoin worth?
I think going maxi is a negative rather than a positive. It's when you go too far in the journey and seek for simplicity. Crypto is a complicated and fast moving world, so it's understandable that some people become religious (as in stop accepting new evidence) and tribal. Still, it's always good trying to keep an open mind.

You can check https://collab.land/ which allows Discord users to access certain channels after proving token ownership.
Lucadg··on Will the rich world’s worker deficit last?
That's very different
Lucadg··on Lebanon’s underground cryptocurrency market
Yes, I think this information hasn't sunk in yet for the majority of people.
Lucadg··on Will the rich world’s worker deficit last?
For the reasons you enlist, I think we'll see a big shift towards working for DAOs or other forms of value creating decentralized and distributed organizations. They allow more independence, you only work on stuff you like and the interests are more aligned.
Lucadg··on The collapse of the IRON stable coin
Smart contracts are neither smart nor contracts.

It's code which does stuff and if you want to be on the safer side of it, you allow time and liquidity to test them out.

If you want to assume risks and possibly higher rewards you get in early (ape, in crypto speech).

It's pretty simple.

What makes it complicated is that they are called smart contracts.

Lucadg··on The Airbnbs
Prediction: Airbnb reverse airdrop within 5 years.
Lucadg··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
Many comments about whether there was fraud or not, the Democrats did the same or not etc...whole the while point here is: is it YouTube's role to decide what content has merit and what has not? I don't think so. It opens the door to even more abuse.

If we had several competing platforms we wouldn't be in this mess.

Lucadg··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
This is the same platform that runs obviously scammy ads of Vitalik Butherin Ethereum giveaways for months at the time. Ads, not even content. I wonder how they plan to monitor elections claims.
Lucadg··on Airbnb S-1
You are not talking about Airbnb here. You are saying a whole industry which existed well before hotels, before Airbnb and will exist after Airbnb is not a good fit for you.
Lucadg··on Ask HN: An organism which creates an ecosystem to feed on it
The Matrix is better, humans just sleep there :) In Uber, Airbnb or Amazon they need to work!
Lucadg··on Ask HN: An organism which creates an ecosystem to feed on it
that's a good one thanks! One aspect which does not fit too much it the fact that the farmer cuts the plants to eat them and the rancher kills the animals. Uber or Airbnb don't kill the users, they keep them alive and extract a part of the value created.

I think I got it thanks to you tough: milking cows.

Does it work? Too harsh?

Lucadg··on Ask HN: An organism which creates an ecosystem to feed on it
Thanks, interesting
Lucadg··on I had to build a web scraper to buy groceries
I'm afraid little testing helps keep numbers low. They tested 5000 people since a few days ago in Bulgaria.
Lucadg··on I had to build a web scraper to buy groceries
In Bulgaria between 8.30 and 10.30 shops are open for the elderly only. I'm not sure how effective this is but it strikes me as a good low tech move.
Lucadg··on Public Health Responses to COVID-19 Outbreaks on Cruise Ships
Yes. I meant if it's active after 17 days, which at the moment seems not to be the case. I'm sticking with the 5 days rule.
Lucadg··on Public Health Responses to COVID-19 Outbreaks on Cruise Ships
This is of huge significance. So far I've been acting in the 3 days life on surfaces.

I quarantined purchases for 5 days before bringing them in the apartment.

If it's 17 days or more it's all been in vain.

It also means it's much harder to stop.

Virtually no one I know in Italy is taking precautions on the stuff they bring home from the supermarket.

My personal nightmare: a nation in lockdown getting infected by the stuff they buy.

Lucadg··on Groceries and Delivered Goods Decontamination Station Instructions
Exactly. I started baking my own bread and when in pass in front of a bakery I wonder how long it will take for people to realize it's not 100% safe.
Lucadg··on The state of the restaurant industry
Thanks for the clarification! One option I learned in Paris years ago is to buy the dough from the bakery and then prepare the pizza myself: it takes a few minutes and it's usually much better.

Also, I've been baking my own bread and pizza. When in a lock down, it's a great pastime.

Take care!

Lucadg··on The state of the restaurant industry
What if the pizza cardboard is contaminated by the delivery guy? Do you place it on the table anyway? What if someone infected coughed on the pizza itself? Or simply touched the edges to place it there?

At the moment studies prove the virus stays in the air for a while but I couldn't find out whether it stays on surfaces or moving stuff makes it fly.

I stopped even buying bread a month ago in my country when there were zero official cases for fear of contamination.

Any info or procedure to make life easier is most welcome.

Lucadg··on A Man Who Saw the Pandemic Coming
Same here. Tried to alert people in Italy. Laughed at me. Now mad at me.

The human mind is indeed fascinating.

Still if only one person was saved because of this, it was worth it.

Lucadg··on Gates Foundation program will issue home testing kits for Covid 19 in Seattle
Numbers per country in general are really hard to evaluate as there is no standard for anything.

Confirmed cases: heavily dependent on tested people. 1500 in US vs 100k in S. Korea makes the comparison useless. Also, who is tested? In Italy they started testing only symptomatic people after a while. China has changed the parameters a few times in these last weeks.

Deaths: are all deceased people tested?

Recoveries: what constitutes as a recovery? Highly variable on a per country basis.

I wonder if WHO has published some standards.

Lucadg··on Highest French court reclassifies Uber drivers as employees
The platform-provider relationship is a new thing. A new kind of regulation is needed.

Trying to define drivers as employees or contractors is futile.

Lucadg··on Etsy sellers are furious over new mandatory ad fees
Maybe decentralized marketplaces could offer a solution in the long term. This one surely is a serious attempt: https://www.originprotocol.com/

We are working with them to build an Airbnb alternative but all sorts of marketplaces can be built.

Do you mean for the Italian version? Own Wordpress website with s2member plugin
Lucadg··on Udemy raises $50M at a $2B valuation from Japanese publisher Benesse
I am not sure as the Udemy account is managed by a friend. I'm pretty sure we have no saying on the price. With 100 students we cashed $329. So, there it is: 3,29 $ per course.

Basically a tip.

I sell the Italian version of this course directly for 200 €.

Lucadg··on Udemy raises $50M at a $2B valuation from Japanese publisher Benesse
I sell a course on Udemy for 189 Euros. They constantly sell it at around 9 Euronand keep a big chunk of it. The only way to make money is to bring in your leads but at that point it's just better to sell directly.

Classic rent extracting platforms.

Lucadg··on 18-year-old personal website, built with Frontpage and still updated
I learned Frontpage in 2000 in a King's Cross (Sydney) internet cafe where you paid 2 AUD for unlimited time...but you couldn't leave, not even to go to the toilet.

That html went straight to Geocities.

The feeling of power part of a minority of people who could actually publish something on the net was amazing.
