> Covid was the definition of an easy layup. It's like bush and 9/11

Anything but. Trump could have won in 2020 if not for Covid. A lot of turnout was anti-Trump protest vote.

Yeah screenshots getting around is a funny metric but it's a good one.

I see BlueSky picking up and occasionally Threads. Sometimes you can't tell where it's from due to crop.

It successfully served its purpose: gave us Trump.

Boomers got weirdly defensive these days. It's no more derogatory than a Millennial is.

> started referring to salaries as crore, relationship advice would reference Indian actors

Crore is a funny word, I should use it more often. English is an international language now and no country has a monopoly. We should take contributions from everyone.

> a social responsibility not to take it

She was paid $6M a year + undisclosed stock package. A lot of people will set aside their morals for this amount of money.

Lu2025··on The Rise of Whatever
The best tasting (and also quickest) corn on the cob is done in microwave. Cook the entire unpeeled ear for 5 minutes on high, cut the butt end about 1 inch in and pull out corn out of the husk. Butter, salt, enjoy!
Lu2025··on How large are large language models?
Yeah, those guys managed to steal the internet.
Lu2025··on They tried Made in the USA – it was too expensive for their customers
> the desire of the customers, as pushed by social media, to follow a fashion changing almost every month

A lot of it is top down, pushed onto customers by the industry. It's very hard to find timeless classics these days, we are given trendy bits that change every year to speed up obsolescence so they purposely look kitschy.

Lu2025··on They tried Made in the USA – it was too expensive for their customers
This is correct. On average I go through a pair of jeans and a pair of hiking pants a year. 30 years ago I wore my dad's jeans quite a bit as a teenager, I remember even passing a driving test in them.

Corporate R&D is a tax write off per section 174.

How about extra vacation time? Does anyone have experience getting it when asked (and actually being able to take that time off)?

Can we just not? Can we wean ourselves from the "addiction" instead?

Lu2025··on Ask HN: What if a peer shared private Slack messages with leadership?
"Private"? Sorry, nothing is private in corporate environment.
Lu2025··on Dancing brainwaves: How sound reshapes your brain networks in real time
This is why I use Instagram on silent. I don't want them to influence me too much.
Lu2025··on Detection of hidden cellular GPS vehicle trackers
The last car without electronics I drove was a Tavria made in Soviet Ukraine 35 years ago. Then dad installed an aftermarket ignition timing chip. You need to go really far back in time to find vehicles without chips.
Lu2025··on "Localhost tracking" explained. It could cost Meta €32B
Yeah, but working in those glasses for any length of time is a mindf*ck. It's disorienting.
Lu2025··on "Localhost tracking" explained. It could cost Meta €32B
That's why Apple is releasing their "glass" interface. AR/VR flopped badly so they are trying to normalize the look to bridge the transition.

> He was apoplectic with mixed rage and incredulity. “How dare you refuse...

If that's a reaction to a "no" in a professional setting, imagine what he could do in personal life.

>I refused to install native versions of apps that could be used in a browser.

Same. After AT&T force obsolesced my perfectly working phone back in February 2022 (it had the bands but they simply didn't want to support it!) I kept it as a dedicated app phone. No web browsing, no stored credentials or cookies, just an app sandbox. Sending a ray of diarrhea to companies who force us to use apps instead of web. I'm looking at you, Chipotle.

Lu2025··on Chatbots are replacing Google's search, devastating traffic for some publishers
Well, the "links" part was an early SEO, mutual back scratching.
Lu2025··on The librarian immediately attempts to sell you a vuvuzela
Correct. Google became unusable around 2020. I search Wikipedia directly and rely on Duck for other needs. As rudimentary as it is for uncommon languages such as Ukrainian, DDG it's still better than Google. Shame on them.
Lu2025··on The librarian immediately attempts to sell you a vuvuzela
I've seen those content mills since before Covid.

> advertisers

This kind of ads is also impossible to filter. Everyone complains about ads on YouTube or Reddit but I never see any with my adblocks. Now we won't be able to squash them.

Lu2025··on The librarian immediately attempts to sell you a vuvuzela
Right? A woman comes home and immediately pours herself a large glass of red wine, without even washing hands or changing into home clothes. WHO DOES THAT? Pure product placement.
Lu2025··on The librarian immediately attempts to sell you a vuvuzela
The entire business model of tech is to fly under the radar of regulations. They can't even force the bastards to stop tormenting us with cookie pop-ups, i seriously doubt the government will do much.
Lu2025··on The librarian immediately attempts to sell you a vuvuzela
This gave me creeps. Modern tech is good an opening up new dimensions of dystopian hell.

Regarding money, they label a lot of expenses as R&D and write them off taxes. Taxpayers foot the bill to some extent.
