Lowkeyloki··on Show HN: CLI forensics tool for tracking USB device artifacts on Linux
I like this. Is there a way to clean up the logs this uses to hide these traces? I didn't see any such functionality as I skimmed the README.
Lowkeyloki··on Link’s Awakening disassembly progress report – week 5
That map image reminds me how big this game was by Game Boy standards. Impressive!
Lowkeyloki··on YourLanguageSucks
Since there's not a section for x, that must mean that x doesn't suck. /s
Lowkeyloki··on What If Consciousness Comes First?
So you're positing that emotions are a cultural virus.
Lowkeyloki··on What If Consciousness Comes First?
I don't know if this "problem" can ever truly be "solved" as there's not really a way to prove there to be a difference between something truly "feeling" emotions compared to faking it convincingly. I have to wonder at what point the difference becomes moot, a sort of Chinese room for emotions. I tend to lean towards solipsism when it comes to this kind of stuff, though. Does the difference actually matter?
Lowkeyloki··on How we built the Waifu Vending Machine
How did you get a picture of my waifu!?
Lowkeyloki··on The video game industry can't go on like this
I agree 100%. However, people like us are the minority somehow.
Lowkeyloki··on What Were CGI Scripts?
s/Were/Are/

There, I fixed it for you.

Lowkeyloki··on Intel Prepares to Graft Google’s Bfloat16 onto Processors
Something about Google being able to influence features in consumer grade CPUs rubs me the wrong way.
Lowkeyloki··on The (Surprisingly Funny) Code for the Apollo Moon Landings Is on GitHub
I mention this because some, if not all, of the code links are dead.

Lowkeyloki··on 30k Hours
I find this so bizarre. I did some quick back of the envelope math and I've found that I've been programming between 10k and 20k hours over the course of a 9-year professional career. That seems simultaneously low and high depending on how you look at it. I don't know that I can draw any concrete conclusions or correlations between time spent and proficiency once you get to such a large amount of time.
Lowkeyloki··on Trabb Pardo–Knuth Algorithm
I wonder what the significance of 11 elements could be?
Lowkeyloki··on Investigating the Galileo Satellite Navigation System Outage with a LimeSDR
The author mentions how they're not going to talk about rumors several times over the course of the article. I'd love to hear what the rumor mill is saying about the possible causes of the outage.
Lowkeyloki··on Powering a Mainframe
I looked at the author's previous post where he details the process of buying the thing. A fair amount of it goes over my head, I must admit. But that final price tag.... You've gotta really love mainframes. I can't imagine the utility bills for it. The power usage was reduced to 1.7kW. I guess some people buy a sports car and some buy a mainframe. Personally, I'd never be able to drop that kind of money for a hobby. I think emulating a mainframe on a fancy PC would scratch my itch. But to each their own.
Lowkeyloki··on “Why was Rust chosen for Libra?” in congressional hearing [video]
I agree that unless the point of the question was more of a power move to show he's not an idiot and that they shouldn't try jerking him around, the question doesn't seem particularly useful.

The action of creating Libra could be interpreted as an attempt to undermine US federal currency. Facebook is the first company with enough clout to actually succeed at widespread cryptocurrency adoption to attempt something like this. I think there are bigger issues to deal with than quibbling about languages and release cycles. I know that the congressman's unspoken question is really whether Facebook has considered the security ramifications of allowing foreign nation-states to meddle directly with our system of currency like they were able to meddle with our news media, etc. But we all know that great programs can be written in terrible languages and terrible programs can be written in great languages. If the congressman is thinking what I think he's thinking, I wish he'd come out and say it instead of beating around the bush.

Lowkeyloki··on Sweet.js – Hygienic Macros for JavaScript
After falling in love with Clojure and then Clojure being rejected by my company, I so wanted Sweet.js to become a thing. Macros allow for some incredible magic and amazing productivity, in my experience. Unfortunately, Sweet.js looks abandoned last I checked. And I'd be surprised if I could sell my company on it.
Lowkeyloki··on Cobol Still Powers the Global Economy
I agree that fixed point is the way to go for currency. But I read that as meaning COBOL didn't have floating point data types at all. I'm guessing that assumption was wrong. The advantage to floating point math over fixed point is speed. If it wasn't for that, nobody would ever want to use floating point.
Lowkeyloki··on Cobol Still Powers the Global Economy
I'd love to know more about what it does with fixed point math that's considered particular or special. Any links would be greatly appreciated.

Even more curious to me is how COBOL squares as fast if it's stuck using fixed point math.

Lowkeyloki··on What Is Posix? Richard Stallman Explains
Who hurt Stallman to make him this way?
Lowkeyloki··on Trump signals scrutiny of Google's ties with China after Thiel comments
I think Thiel and Google are both guilty of some questionable dealings. Thiel is only able to cast aspersions because his questionable dealings have been restricted to federal and state government entities.

Can Peter Thiel please just plug himself into his own personal Matrix/brain-in-a-vat VR fantasy where he gets to be John Galt and Howard Roark or whatever and just leave the rest of us alone already?

Lowkeyloki··on Barricelli showed that organisms evolved by symbiosis and cooperation (2014)
Tangentially related, I highly recommend the Steven Levy book Artificial Life. It's pretty dated now, but it's still a fantastic read. I couldn't put it down.
Lowkeyloki··on Epic Games Supports Blender Foundation with $1.2M
That's probably a drop in the bucket for Epic, but it's still much appreciated!
Lowkeyloki··on YouTube videos that have almost zero previous views
My anecdotal observations are that the lonely, unloved videos typically consist of home movies, personal vacation videos, children's sporting events, and group exercise. Except for the exercise, it seems like the kind of stuff you'd find on any family's VHS tapes from the 80s and 90s.

Can anyone explain the prevalence of group exercise videos? Has anyone had radically different experiences?

Lowkeyloki··on Sonic Devices Play High-Pitched Noises to Repel Teens
I seem to remember this effect being co-opted by teens to turn the tables. Use it as a text notification sound on your phone and you can text back and forth in class without alerting the teacher.
Lowkeyloki··on German submarine U-1206
They needed a toilet specialist?
Lowkeyloki··on Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro
No, not in this revision. I was speaking more generally.
Lowkeyloki··on Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro
One step forward, two steps back. They're finally getting rid of the horrible butterfly keyboard in favor of a more traditional scissor switch, but they're gonna make damn sure you have a touch bar.
Lowkeyloki··on How to run a small social network site for your friends
For what it's worth, I really love the design of this site. It has a really slick xwindows aesthetic.
Lowkeyloki··on Who’s Behind the GandCrab Ransomware?
I trust Krebs to do the right thing, but hopefully he went to authorities with this before publishing this dude's personal information.

Of course, I may be a little too sensitive about this kind of stuff. I am in the middle of reading Neal Stephenson's REAMDE right now.
