LoveGracePeace··on Climate Spiral [video]
The post war era led to the massive population spike, not improved farming. Anyone apart from their honey for more than a week knows that.
LoveGracePeace··on Climate Spiral [video]
Cool graphic from NASA. The Earth has been around for 4 billion years. When we have 1 million year's worth of temperature measuring, we might then be able to comprehend the Earth's environment on a geologic scale as well as human impact, if any.
LoveGracePeace··on Bob Cassette Rewinder: Hacking Detergent DRM
It's encouraging to read that young people are starting to get a good foothold on the ground. Tech is cool and helpful but only as far as we can throw it when it breaks.
LoveGracePeace··on Tell HN: Microsoft locks migrated Minecraft accounts, requires phone to unlock
Agreed. And after years of enjoying and relaxing in Minecraft, when they started this new account politics in violation of our (original player base) agreement with Mojang; I quit playing Minecraft.
LoveGracePeace··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
Agree. In the US today...

A 16 year old can be licenced to drive a car which is a potentially deadly killing machine.

A 17 year old can join the US Military today, use firearms, fight and die for their country and if needed; kill their own countrymen if politicians deem some citizens are a threat.

An 18 year old can vote and determine who should run the country then they go back to watching TickTok 24/7.

A 17 year old cannot have a beer.

There is something wrong with all of that, today driving a car, voting and entering the military should all be the age that is required to legally buy a beer.

Celebrities who choose to be in the public eye should not be allowed to be protected by people with firearms that the same celebrities campaign against.

The purpose of a gun is hunting, self-defense and deterence. Except in the hands of someone intending to murder.
LoveGracePeace··on FireZone – Open-source VPN server and firewall
It looks impressive.

Not going to knock these solutions but at least for Tailscale, if I understand what I read on their web site correctly, I think it's built on Wireguard. I found Wireguard to be easy enough to configure and get working and I'm lazy and cheap.

Since then, I run my web and email servers on an old laptop in my home and the Internet POP is a $3.50 VM plus $1 for a static IP, at AWS Lightsail. This works for me but if I needed to connect a disparate office and devices together I might look at Tailscale or one of these packaged solutions, or maybe not.

"National Guard-- which is a reserve force of the US Military"

That is why anyone stating the National Guard is a standin for "well armed militia" is wrong..."a reserve force of the US Military" is not representative of the people; it is a protector of whomever is in power at any moment in the US.

LoveGracePeace··on Tunnel.pyjam.as – HTTP tunnels without custom software thanks to WireGuard
I tunnel traffice using Wireguard, why would I want something on top of it?
LoveGracePeace··on Minikube quickly sets up a local Kubernetes cluster on macOS, Linux, and Windows
I've tried several of the kubes and k3s for my personal projects works well. I'd use it for work too if I had different options. I think Rancher Desktop might cost though so I use kubectl to do everything.
LoveGracePeace··on How This Ends
"In the early 80s" Ronald Reagan was elected President of the United States of America, Iran immediately gave up the hostages they'd been holding for over a year under Carter, and overall the world and the US rejoiced that a real leader was finally in charge of the US. That is what happened.
LoveGracePeace··on The balance has shifted away from SPAs
At this pace, JavaScript will be gone and we will be back to the joy of making web apps in all Java before I retire.
LoveGracePeace··on No Mention of Eclipse, Mr. Ex-Googler
Yeah that's right, Google and Jetbrains sittn' in a tree.

LoveGracePeace··on Apple's director of machine learning resigns due to return to office work
It used to be AI then was renamed to ML (I know, ML is supposed to be a component of AI). AI has been touted since, let's see, my first encounter with it was in the early 1990's. It sucked. Then again in the early 2000's. It sucked. ML today is almost somewhat barely usable with hurculean efforts, IOW...it still sucks.
LoveGracePeace··on Moving a macOS window by clicking anywhere on it
My wife is non-technical and uses Linux Desktop (KDE) every day and prefers it to the sometimes weirdness of Windows. We never used Mac and have no desire to.
LoveGracePeace··on Moving a macOS window by clicking anywhere on it
Same here, this is actually cool!
LoveGracePeace··on What are your most used self-hosted applications?
Personal email server, web server sites.
LoveGracePeace··on Tailscale raises $100M
I do the same, for multiple domains I own. Definitely not difficult.
LoveGracePeace··on I draw figures for my mathematical lecture notes using Inkscape (2019)
Steam's UI hasn't changed a lot either really. A UI that works well doesn't have to change much and probably shouldn't. I personally greatly dislike the modern web UI look with text boxes the size of Mt. Rushmore.
LoveGracePeace··on Nukes, nubs and coners: The unique social hierarchy aboard a nuclear submarine
Agreed. He did a great job documenting and explaining to his audience. The crew did a great job entertaining his presence.

LoveGracePeace··on Nukes, nubs and coners: The unique social hierarchy aboard a nuclear submarine
Would be more interesting to see colleges teach how submariners teach instead of teaching things like Myer-Briggs.
LoveGracePeace··on Nukes, nubs and coners: The unique social hierarchy aboard a nuclear submarine
It was like that in the 80's and 90's too. When we went on a special run, nearly the entire crew would hot rack.
