LordLandon··on RIM sues Kik for patent infringement
Before invalidating kik's keys, they removed kik from the bb market once before, claiming battery drain as the problem. If that was honestly the problem they had with it, there wouldn't be a lawsuit now, or there would've been one earlier. This is most definitely an evil attempt at keeping bbm relevant which began with a pretty sneaky excuse.

LordLandon··on RIM kicks Kik off Blackberries: Revokes keys, disables push
Secure? Stable? Could you elaborate? Are all messages encrypted? Are other applications so terrible now-a-days that "doesn't crash!" is a feature? Other than that, it sounds like IRC, with a read notification for those who just need to know if their message hasn't been read yet, or they're being ignored.

I was reading the page looking for grandparent's question, and I still don't see why bbm would be such a huge feature that bb owners just can't live without. Sure, I can see how it may beat sms where international communication may be concerned, and texting someone in a different country doesn't work, and I can see how the group chat is useful, but every single other IM client can offer the same thing... I just don't get it.

LordLandon··on A Practical Guide To Securing OpenSSH
If you're going to use weird ssh-hiding tricks like alternate ports, gateways, or port-knocking, be sure to read all about what you can do with ~/.ssh/config

  Host securebox
    #if not proxying
    HostName securebox.tld
    Port 1023
    User fji00random
    #if going through a gateway
    ProxyCommand ssh gatewaybox.tld nc securebox.tld 22
    #if knocking
    ProxyCommand proxyknock %h %p 1337 1337 900
With that, you can have

  ssh securebox
rather than

  knock securebox.tld 1337 1337 900; ssh -p 1023 fji00random@securebox.tld
(and for systems without a knocker installed, you can use something like http://sprunge.us/HJHB for proxyknock, which can be cloned along with the rest of your dotfiles/scripts)

And if you're doing public key auth, read about ssh-agent, it can store your private keys in memory so that you don't have to retype your passphrase all the time, while the "physical" key is still protected if stolen. In my bash_profile, I have

  SSHAFILE=/tmp/.$(whoami)-ssha

  if [ -n "$SSH_AUTH_SOCK" ]; then
    echo "We has auth!"
  elif [ -f $SSHAFILE ]; then
    . $SSHAFILE
  else
    eval `ssh-agent | tee $SSHAFILE`
    chmod 600 $SSHAFILE
    ssh-add
  fi
This runs ssh-agent if it's not running, and sets proper env variables if it is.

(also, the ssh-agent can be forwarded, so you can use your private key to auth into box C, from box B, while the key is only on your local box, A - this can also be added to your .ssh/config)

LordLandon··on Do you read HackerNews all day and never actually do anything?
Two ideas:

A large part of the reason HN is so distracting, is that usually, when you read it, you look at the front page and open everything that looks interesting in new tabs. So when you're using your browser for something productive, you see a tab open that you haven't had a chance to read, and you want to go read it. Solution? Firefox profiles. Start firefox with firefox -P work --no-remote, and use that for all your work related things, while your should-read-later-eventually-maybe tabs stay happily open in another profile.

Second idea,

  echo "127.0.0.1" `sqlite3 ~/.mozilla/firefox/*default/places.sqlite "select url from moz_places order by -visit_count limit 100" | cut -d/ -f 3|sort -u| tr "\n" " "` | sudo tee -a /etc/hosts
Maybe HN isn't your only distraction, and this saves you having to figure it out.
