LordKano··on Two years of teaching high school CS
I completely agree. In any field of sufficient complexity, 2 years isn't enough time to learn enough to have an informed opinion on reforming it.

Like many others here, I work in IT and that's the kind of thinking that led to every new project being "Ruby On Rails" about 12-15 years ago and every time a new underlying library gets updated, a bunch of code breaks. Meanwhile, C/C++, COBOL and FORTRAN programs from 30-50 years ago are still running the infrastructure of the world.

Newer doesn't always mean better.

Using such language is a guarantee that such an effort will not succeed.

Of course it's important and it's inevitable but calling it an "emergency" would by hyperbole and cause it to be taken less seriously.

LordKano··on Not Your Grandfather’s Perl
When I was an intern, my boss insisted that I learn Perl. I had not yet been introduced to the ways of the monks but I learned quickly.

Perl is still my go-to language when I need to write something quickly.

I have so many purpose driven utilities that I have written in Perl, that it saves me several man-hours of work every month.

LordKano··on The United States Is Still Under-Policed and Over-Imprisoned
That's a fair call-out. I cannot link to any double-blind, peer reviewed studies. I'm referencing only my personal experience and gut.

I'm probably one of those people that you hold in contempt. There are more guns than there are fingers in my house.

I am unabashedly pro gun. I have testified at hearings on behalf of gun owners.

Still, the point I'm making here is that there is something especially troubling about those cops who see themselves as the protagonist from an 80s action movie.

LordKano··on The United States Is Still Under-Policed and Over-Imprisoned
In my opinion, there are 3 types of people who get into law enforcement. 1. People who legitimately want to serve and protect their communities. 2. People who want a steady government paycheck and benefits. 3. People who have a psychological need to be in control of other people.
LordKano··on The United States Is Still Under-Policed and Over-Imprisoned
I post pictures on Facebook of myself and my children shooting guns.

I had one high school classmate who wanted to become a cop. He was a runt who discovered weightlifting and steroids. The thing that kept him from becoming a cop was that he got caught stealing from vending machines when we were teenagers.

It's fantastic that he didn't get to carry a badge and gun.

LordKano··on The United States Is Still Under-Policed and Over-Imprisoned
Considering how many people go into law enforcement because they want to play with military toys without the burdens of military service, it's going to be hard to pull them away from that.

I think that manufacturers are too busy trying to be the Steve Jobs of cars.

They're thinking about making their vehicles look differently than everyone else's instead of thinking about what would work the best?

LordKano··on The Uselessness of Phenylephrine
It's so bad that I'd rather just scan my ID and get a product that contains pseudoephedrine.
LordKano··on I was rejected by Codecademy three times, so I built my own
Someone that passionate can probably be mentored into the skill set necessary to do the job.

I spent a year at a TA at a University and in that time I had two students who were really stellar. They were outstanding programmers. They paid attention detail and wrote elegant but easy to read code that worked. I took the time to offer both of them my assistance if they needed any help after graduation.

I play video games with one of them. The other one got out of CS and changed her major to something art related.

LordKano··on “Does induced demand apply to bike lanes?” and other questions
My experience is anecdotal but I have observed that in Pittsburgh, the thing that was accomplished by adding bike lanes was to increase traffic congestion on roads that weren't ruined by the bike lanes.
LordKano··on After 50 years of the war on drugs, 'what good is it doing for us?'
We could decriminalize marijuana today and watch what happens.

That would free up over 80% of the DEA's budget to go after meth and heroin.

LordKano··on After 50 years of the war on drugs, 'what good is it doing for us?'
It's helping law enforcement maintain high budgets. The drug war fuels the violence of the drug trade and that violence requires the police be well equipped to handle it.
LordKano··on My Eight-Year Quest to Digitize 45 Videotapes
Man, that was a lot of work but at least you'll only have to do it once.
LordKano··on The joys of owning an ‘OG’ email account
I have an OG account that's my first_name.last_name and I keep getting all kinds of other people's stuff.

Apparently, one of them is a doctor with a caribbean bank account. I was getting monthly balance updates for years.

I get confirmations of automobile service appointments and a bunch of other things.

Once, I even got an email from someone saying "This is MY name."

Occasionally, I get alerts on my phone that someone tried a password recovery. I gleefully decline and go about my day.

My name is neither common nor uncommon but I'm glad I got here first.

I have to think a lot of people left it behind because of all of the malware that was masquerading as something else.
LordKano··on Developer won’t get hit by a bus, they’ll get hired by Netflix
There are so many recruitment agencies in this town that I am not disadvantaged by not working with them.

Their behavior wasn't ethical. They didn't approach me. I found their job posting and approached them.

LordKano··on Developer won’t get hit by a bus, they’ll get hired by Netflix
I understand why they did it.

My decision to make them persona non grata was about not rewarding them for behavior that negatively impacted me.

LordKano··on Developer won’t get hit by a bus, they’ll get hired by Netflix
Approximately 10 years ago, I was really unhappy with my work situation and was checking job postings. I found one that sounded right up my alley and I reached out to the agency that posted it. They told me that because I was working for another one of their clients, they wouldn't submit me for the job because they felt it was unethical.

I responded that I wasn't owned by my employer and just as they were free to let me go, I was free to leave on my own. The real reason was that since employers pay them and talent does not, they don't want to risk their income stream. Since that day, when this agency emails me to ask if I'm looking for new opportunities. I remind them of that incident and request that they don't contact me again.

It took about 8 years to finally sink in that I would NEVER have any dealings with them and they eventually stopped emailing me.

LordKano··on Hack of 251 Law Enforcement Websites Exposes Personal Data of 700k Cops
I may or may not have the torrent downloading right now. At this rate, it may or may not be finished some time tomorrow.
LordKano··on Hack of 251 Law Enforcement Websites Exposes Personal Data of 700k Cops
I have a philosophical problem with leaking people's personal information but I admit that I'm curious. I want to see what's in this data.
LordKano··on Man sentenced to prison after assault of domain name owner who refused to sell
That's advice that'll get people killed.

This isn't a junkie wanting your wallet. This is someone forcibly entering your home with weapons and assaulting you.

You have to assume that once you have given up the thing he wants, you remaining alive isn't high on his list of priorities.

The victim lived. He did the right thing.

LordKano··on How to get rich without getting lucky (2018)
I am of the opinion that the government taxes rich people more because there are fewer of them and they are less likely to vote out the politicians who do it.

It's the masses voting bread and circuses for themselves.

Rich people only have the option of leaving but pretty much every place worth living does the same thing.

LordKano··on Should Mental Disorders Have Names?
Psychiatry, psychology etc aren't doing a great job with that.

I'm not sure that's a fair criticism. They're certainly not doing a perfect job but the number of people who have a higher quality of life than a century ago is a real success.

There are people who are living fulfilling lives who would have been housed in mental institutions or who would have long since killed themselves, given the state of mental health care 50 or 60 years ago.

LordKano··on Is the Insect Apocalypse Upon Us?
I have a special affinity for mantises. They have an almost otherworldly quality to them.

I'm also extremely grateful that they're smaller than us. A dog sized mantis would be the stuff of nightmares and horse sized mantises would pretty much have guaranteed our extinction long before now.

LordKano··on Scientists Are Rethinking Animal Cognition
I think the closer you are to the actual killing of animals, the more you tend to revere them, if anything.

As someone who has recently joined that club, I agree. I have been hunting for years but this year I killed my first deer. The whole process changed something inside of me.

Because of my actions, this gentle creature went from breathing, living and doing whatever it wanted to being food.

While I was aiming my shot, she turned her head towards me and looked at me. I can clearly remember seeing her blink.

I put the arrow through her heart and lungs. I dragged her out of the woods. I gutted her and hung her up. I packed her body in ice.

These were things that I had seen done before but never did myself.

As I was field dressing the body, I looked at her and apologized, then I thanked her for providing healthy meat to feed my family.

In my mind, it changed venison from butcher paper wrapped meat that was leaner than beef into the flesh of an animal that was killed.

I don't know what she thought but I think she was, on some level, self aware.

Yeah, I remember moving so that I couldn't see the enemies on the next screen, mentally timing the movement and then coming back to see if they were where I thought they should be.
