Lord-Jobo··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Trans women are women, but not female. The right are the only ones talking about trans people and have been for 6 years, regardless
Lord-Jobo··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Do you... Do you think the dnc is not the party? How do you think primary elections work? Harris is a fair exception to that, as there was ni primary, otherwise this is just confusing.
Lord-Jobo··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Can't help but notice you didn't actually say any of what they could have done to win
Lord-Jobo··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Buttigieg did this literally nonstop on behalf of Biden and Harris. Did nothing.
Lord-Jobo··on Trump wins presidency for second time
It was LITERALLY the FIRST thing she talked about as candidate. Instantly. I think this exchange perfectly reveals the true core of the issue: most people, even those educated and engaged with politics (like 15% of the voter base) don't listen to, remember, or care about policy. Not even a little bit.

This entire thread is ripe with it; hundreds of suggestions about what policy would have worked, what she SHOULD have focused on.

It doesn't matter. It's obvious when you really just embrace it: she should have lied her ass off. Blatantly. Overly simply obvious lies.

"I will fix the economy. I will triple your paycheck and lower prices at the grocery store. I will half the cost of a house. Free college for everyone. 5x the military budget"

Why not? If people don't listen to the truth and vote instead for the man who tells very nearly EXCLUSIVELY lies then what is there to lose?

Lord-Jobo··on Trump wins presidency for second time
But I mean what else could she do? You tell the electorate the truth and they don't understand it or don't listen, you lie and say "fine we will fix it with price controls" and they freak out all the same. Only one side of the political apparatus can like with impunity, apparently.
Lord-Jobo··on A near impossible literacy test Louisiana used to suppress the black vote
One disproportionately effects black voters, with an (arbitrary guess) 80% effectiveness rate.

One disproportionately effects black voters with a (https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/impa...) ~10% effectiveness

Just because one is working better then the other doesn't mean they are any different in their purpose

Lord-Jobo··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
Yup, presidents will enjoy the "presumption of immunity" for practically any action, and the only chance at consequence is years and years down the line after jumping through massive courtroom hurdles, in which it will almost certainly need to be in front of the supreme Court again, where the court majority will forgive 'their' president or convinct the 'other' president.

Years of zero consequence. Imagine what an egomaniacal, unethical, vengeful, unempathetic, asshole could do with all of that power.

Lord-Jobo··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
Voting for a reasonable human for president is probably the important check to keep in mind for the next few months
Lord-Jobo··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
"his words were unfortunate"

Many you really couldn't possibly sanitize the situation any more. He said an absolutely heinous thing out loud that reflects values I definitely don't want from someone running a "neutral" dissemination platform for secrets

Lord-Jobo··on Chang'e 6 lunar sample return mission returns with samples from moon's far side
Or just very long power lines and multiple solar stations, it's not like the moon is impossible large. But that would be harder than a singular location using nuclear fuel, it's true.
Lord-Jobo··on Can men live without war? (1956)
I would think I creating islands would be the first stop for "more land in good places" considering it's already possible.
Lord-Jobo··on Can men live without war? (1956)
I think it's more about our resource growth outpacing our resource demand, because if that happens we bypass the resource competition that drives most conflict.

This has a lot of pathways, tech efficiency, slower population growth, more resource acquisition (asteroid mining etc). It's definitely possible in the large scope, but I suspect there will be periods of spiking demand that still cause lots of short term conflicts.

Famines and mass migration are very likely with climate change going the way it is. Over the course of 100 years I suspect the resource problem will alleviate but until then there will be a lot of conflict.

The only real long term trick is creating larger and larger gulfs between the resource demand and availability, buffers that can withstand the smaller scale changes. But, unfortunately, our current dominant systems of power view buffers like that as either weakness or opportunity that are antithetical to progress.

Lord-Jobo··on Land value tax in online games and virtual worlds (2022)
Saw mill, industrial lathe, or spot welder; I'm not sure it matters too much which one of these is killing desperate and poor children being abused for profit
Lord-Jobo··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or does the job market for IT seem bad today?
The worst IT professionals, like bottom 10% (which seem to be in the top .01% for getting hired and holding a job, somehow), are about on par with AI in my experience. At least with Health care IT professionals, which might be a huge selection bias. I am just about as likely to see complete nonsense suggestions or a complete misunderstanding of the problem from either.
Lord-Jobo··on Is Microsoft trying to commit suicide?
If someone points a gun at you, says "I am going to shoot you in 5 seconds" and then you stand there and get shot instead of diving behind cover, its still not suicide. its a dumb death but the shooter still committed a homicide.

And i do feel like that is a decent analogy for the situation

Lord-Jobo··on 'It's better for humans in general': The 4-day workweek is closer than you think

Lord-Jobo··on Daily cannabis use overtakes drinking in US first

Lord-Jobo··on The world has probably passed peak pollution
I think peak baby is less about good or bad and more about a turning point for growth demand.
Lord-Jobo··on Progress Quest: The original idle game
As a big fan of the genre I do NOT recommend cifi. It has nice polish and a neat general design, but also has strong incentives for leaving the game open and your screen on (for engagement farming) and a whole lot of purchasable (real money) upgrades. and I do mean a lot.
Lord-Jobo··on The Battle to Define Mental Illness (2010)
I think a lot of people have a hysterically warped perspective on the insanity defense because of American legal/police media.

People don't understand how near impossible it is to deploy successfully in trial, in the US.

Lord-Jobo··on The Battle to Define Mental Illness (2010)
I don't think there are any as broad as "autism" in general, but "ADHD" in general is close. That's why both have been divided up in recent years for the sake of precision.

Seriously 5/10 people in my friends group have ADHD (some with autism too) and we all have such wildly different symptoms and struggles with it that it took quite some time for us to recognize our shared syndrome lol

Lord-Jobo··on Microsoft employees exposed internal passwords in security lapse
That depends basically entirely on what the second factor is and how often you are requiring it.

Imagine futuretopia with me for a moment; when you are hired at a company they send a very secure cryptographic keygen to your subdermal ID implant. Maybe with 3 different fields for "employee" "division" "role"

When you enter the building, implant comms automatically using "employee" with the mantrap pads acting as a second factor as you type in your yearly revolving 9 digit employee passcode

Same with the workstation when you log in using "division", and maybe when you specifically access certain files "role". They all last a user session length, and can all use the employee 9 digit as primary login

This scenario gives you effortless 2 factor, 3 different times, and the employee only has to put in their simple 9 digit code thrice daily, maybe 6 times account for lunch break.

Does this scenario seem like two factor that's on the way out and causing more problems and inconvenience than it's worth?

Two factor sms where you have to type the code in yourself and sms is insecure? Sure that's dog shit. But we can make a better future instead of disregarding a pretty solid security concept

Lord-Jobo··on Microsoft employees exposed internal passwords in security lapse
It's not that difficult to do, it's literally day one of a "learning SQL and databases" course. You don't need that much tech savvy to follow a tutorial and start queries in what is a basically a big fancy excel workbook
Lord-Jobo··on Show HN: Focumon – Turn your work into a multiplayer adventure
I think it's just the nature of our evolutionary incentive system. Survival is king for evolution, and ensuring survival with incentives is actually fairly simple; make damage feel bad (pain) make hunger/thirst feel bad and fullness feel good, make sex feel good(but not required for it to work), socializing gives good brain buzzes, danger and fear keep us awake and alert, etc.

The relevant one is that success feels good and failure feels bad. However, all of these systems rely on raising or lowering your feelings in response to stimulation. That is inherently short term and works best with very direct feedback and short 'loops'.

Humans are simply terrible at long term success(compared to short term) because it is a process of incentive that lives entirely in the logic part of the mind, with very little animal input. And the people/organizations that reliably achieve long term successes already hijack these short term systems to achieve those successes.

This is just a tool to do that, at the end of the day. Games are designed around that animal system, mega optimized, so it makes sense to use them as a format for a productivity tool.

That's especially important now, because so many large organizations have workers that are completely detached from the final product, making the feedback EVEN WORSE.

Lord-Jobo··on Who killed the network switch? A Hubris Bug Story
I can think of very few scenarios that would send me into an 8 hour fury and caffeine fueled debug session as quickly as that.

It's one of those problems that throws you into a fit of self doubt and paranoia. You question your basic assumptions, your hardware, your colleagues, and God himself before making any headway and it turns out its often someone else's "fault", who programmed some core feature of a library 25 years ago in an obscure way, because they never could have imagined the Frankenstein-esque behemoth their code would be embedded in nearly 3 decades later.

Lord-Jobo··on Julian Assange granted permission to appeal against extradition to US
As a broad methodology it isn't torture per say, sure. But the implementation in the vast majority of our justice systems 100% no question is aggregious torture.

Lord-Jobo··on Julian Assange granted permission to appeal against extradition to US
Wrecklessly and without simple redaction, in such a way that very well might have resulted in the deaths of US officials. And highly questionable selective publishing.

I think the guy is getting fucked over in this unfairly, but let's not pretend he has released information to a reasonable standard.
