Musk has made dozens of verifiable lies publicly. Why would you take him at face value?
Libcat99··on America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster
And it will remain this was as long as the consequences of not protecting our data remain trivial.
Libcat99··on Silicon Valley is in denial in face of widespread backlash
If my local groups are any indication the flock stuff is angering both the left and the right, perhaps for different reasons. Same with datacenters.

The datacenter meeting for our board was the largest I've ever seen in town. They had to move it to the school auditorium when 1000+ people showed up the first time.

Libcat99··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
I wanted to add I searched online for the text to see where I could find/read the rest :) So yes, keep it up.
Libcat99··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
All of it is greed. 100%.

If you could be profitable with 50 customers providing excellent support, you can be MORE profitable spreading that excellent support across a larger customer base.

Just because none of the big corpos choose to do this does not mean it isn't possible. It's JUST greed.

One day a bridge collapsed, and no one came to fix it.

This is how an empire dies. One toilet/park/swing at a time.

Libcat99··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
Frankly, this is insanity.

You would choose helping save 100 children so you can paint an aircraft pink rather than 10,000 for the same resource allocation.

Libcat99··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
So you, when given the choice.

1. Save/heal/supply as many people as possible. 2. "Make Amends" by painting aircraft pink.

You choose 2.

This is where you and I disagree.

While I would much rather see medical kits distributed to Gaza today than bombs, this could (and should) be accomplished not by converting F35s.

Dismantle the F35s, and drop supplies with a C130 or other military transport capable of airdrop, which will be VASTLY more cost/fuel efficient, thus allowing you to do a lot more of it than you ever could with a fleet of F35s.

Which I'm 95% certain is exactly what the other folks you're arguing with are suggesting.

Libcat99··on Studio Canal Movies purchased on PlayStation Store removed without refund
I think it would be reasonable for the typical person to believe that when you click a button labeled "buy", you are buying the item, not renting it.

Don't defend theft/fraud based for billion dollar corporations. It's not a good look.

Libcat99··on Flock cameras track more than your license plate, and they're spreading fast
No one in law enforcement is trying to help you. That's not what it's for.
Libcat99··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
This is true in the same sense you don't need to own a pair of shoes.

Technically, sure, but there are jobs that require you to have a phone (at many different career points too), colleges that expect it, and more. And while there may be workarounds, they are often workarounds at someone else's expense, such as asking someone else to check the class schedule or work schedule.

So yes. You don't need to own a smart phone. And you don't need to own shoes. Both will get you (understandable) looks from general society. Both will limit what you can do. Both are somewhat understandable as having become a default, expected thing that people WILL have.

The feds don't own state IDs in the US, at least.
Libcat99··on A new database on police use of force and misconduct in California
And arresting the users solves none of that. Maybe it hides it from casual observers, but if you actually want to help people, treatment programs and assistance, not cops, are what you need.
Libcat99··on FICO to incorporate buy-now-pay-later loans into credit scores
8 years ago I bought a house. My monthly rent was 1300 and mortgage/escrow/repair savings were instead 2000. Rent went up $100-$200 a year.

My son is looking for rentals in our same community and the equivalent rental to what I had is now around $3000.

Even ignoring appreciation, in the long term there was a cash flow savings.

Libcat99··on AI Won't Kill Junior Devs – But Your Hiring Strategy Might
The issue is not that companies don't have the funds to chase these bugs (which will impact future trust/revenue), it's that they don't want to spend it chasing these bugs. Next quarter thinking leads to bad software.
Libcat99··on FreeBASIC is a free/open source BASIC compiler for Windows DOS and Linux
Not free, but this was one of my favorite things when learning to program. https://everybasic.info/lib/exe/fetch.php/basics/vbdos-3.png Visual Basic for DOS.
Libcat99··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
The report includes notes on certain messages having durations set before they would disappear. This indicates intent.
Libcat99··on America Is Missing The New Labor Economy – Robotics Part 1
A broad UBI plan would likely not have every single person's income going up by a known amount, either.

Most of the plans I've seen taper off and then become a tax at certain income levels.

Libcat99··on Public health data disappeared. RestoredCDC.org is bringing it back
I agree with you, and I support archive.org, but let's be clear.

The US gov could shut them down tomorrow. Illegally, but that's not stopping them elsewhere right now.

So support archive.org, and support backups elsewhere.

Libcat99··on HP ditches 15-minute wait time policy due to 'feedback'
Support is looked at as a cost center only.

This policy was meant to make people give up, it's literally anti-support.

Libcat99··on 2-Year Call of Duty False Permanent Ban Reversed by Court Case
Imprisonment is worse, being kicked out of university is also worse, but a company taking your money for a product and then banning you from use of that product without a reasonable (and inexpensive) appeals process is also evil (and imo should be illegal).
Libcat99··on Making an intersection unsafe for pedestrians to save seconds for drivers
Our town has Installed several crosswalks with flashing lights in common crossing areas away from traffic lights. It feels many times safer.
Libcat99··on Let's Quit X
It appears to have better blocking mechanics, so I don't know. The same content might exist there, but you won't see things that you filtered.
Libcat99··on AI companies cause most of traffic on forums
Switching to sending wrong, inexpensive data might be preferable to blocking them.

I've used this with voip scanners.

Libcat99··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
Don't misunderstand me, I think it's fine he gets the treatment he needs to resolve his pain.

It should have happened without death, is all.

Libcat99··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect

Libcat99··on Show HN: App that asks ‘why?’ every time you unlock your phone
So responding to you and the parent post both...

I have my own thought and also one in response to the "taking a photo" type tasks.

I'd like a drop down of some tasks I predefined, so I can answer with one of those.

Things like "answering a message" that I can choose instead of entering one. There is occasionally one message with 3 choices, I think, about how this aligns with my goals. So something like that but user defined.

Second thing, maybe a couple of those options could be tied to app launch so clicking it takes you to the common task. For example, "Taking a photo" could drop me right back into the camera app.

Great app, I've been using it all day and just doing so is insightful. And glad this comment chain led me to the "cooldown" function.

Libcat99··on Using BenQ's latest 32" 4k monitor (RD320U) which is aimed at programming
I reread the part about speakers 3 times and still don't understand. He says it has speakers but then implies it doesn't? I'm lost.
Libcat99··on Spotify's Car Thing, due for bricking, is getting an open source second life
I don't disagree IF they make tooling available for reuse.

Of course, I'd prefer they do that all along.
