LiamPa··on Why a Traffic Flow Suddenly Turns into a Traffic Jam (2013)
In the UK this is illegal, since 2013 police can fine up to £100 and three points on your license however I don’t think it has made a blind bit of difference. Aggressively moving to the slow lane after overtaking sometimes helps..
LiamPa··on Averages Can Be Misleading: Try a Percentile (2014)

LiamPa··on Ask HN: What’s the most important software in the world?
You have obviously never tried to decipher a swift message or been forced to read the ‘handbook’
LiamPa··on Ask HN: How do you write efficient and elegant systems / APIs?
This is how I like to program, I find writing the readme first helps as I can write the ideal/easiest way of using the code first as a user.

When it comes to writing code for the user Kenneth Reitz is the master in my eyes.

LiamPa··on My journey applying AI to horse racing
Exactly, for example yesterday I placed over 5000 bets, not all of them won but as far as my strategies were concerned they were value and should therefore be in profit over the long term.
LiamPa··on My journey applying AI to horse racing
Value is value, doesn’t matter if it wins, its all a numbers game.

Betfair / any exchange allows you to back/lay.

He seems to be ignoring the overround which is effectively the house and then commission when you are banned and have to resort to the exchanges.

LiamPa··on My journey applying AI to horse racing
The closer to the off the more accurate the price is (wisdom of the crowd) thus less value, you need to know something others don’t to win long term from taking the starting price!

I assume you are American as everyone in the UK has a personal betting machine and it’s in their pocket.

LiamPa··on Google Search Operators: A Complete List (2018)
So what is actually happening when I hit search? Have google ever shared the high level process?
LiamPa··on Queueing theory: The science of waiting in line
They do this in the UK with variable speed limits, the M25 (ring road around London) is the bottleneck so you will regularly find that the roads joining it during rush hour will have a limit when there is no apparent problem.
LiamPa··on Courier: Dropbox migration to gRPC
Thanks for the response.

> faster recovery times

Is this because of client timeouts or am I missing something?

LiamPa··on Courier: Dropbox migration to gRPC
LIFO, I see its being used here but I still don’t understand why you would?
LiamPa··on Ask HN: What are unusual perks of a job?
Consulting, points! Annoyingly we are limited to using company Amex but can still collect hotel points / air miles which when you are travelling first class can soon add up. Many of my colleagues have there holidays paid for with a few on Marriot platinum.
LiamPa··on Ask HN: Go-to web stack today?
Interesting ask recently regarding it.

LiamPa··on Tesla JSON API (Unofficial)
Well gitbook is smart! Thought I was reading through official documentation.
LiamPa··on Ask HN: What database version management tools do you use?
Alembic looks interesting, I currently use Django where I can for version controlling database changes but it’s not ideal. I really want a terraform type tool.
LiamPa··on Ask HN: How to Evolve a Legacy .NET Application with Python
Nearing completion of something similar:

Phase I C# -> python / Django / some simple html forms

Phase II (in progress) Django rest backend / react front end

We host the application internally, all our team members know at least basic python so updates are easy and deployment is much quicker.

LiamPa··on On Cash
In London it’s not uncommon to see buskers with contactless readers for donations. There is even an app to donate to homeless people which details who they are and where the money will go.

LiamPa··on An eclipse gave researchers an inside look at how bees respond to light
Not sure where you are located but there was a documentary last night on bbc which demonstrated they can’t. Do you have examples where someone has been able to do this?
LiamPa··on An eclipse gave researchers an inside look at how bees respond to light
The question is, could an animal do this with no natural light as humans can’t.
LiamPa··on An eclipse gave researchers an inside look at how bees respond to light
I would have thought that it’s the sun setting which causes them to wake unless they have a perception of time which I don’t think they do.
LiamPa··on Ask HN: What are the engineering challenges in high frequency trading?
Old article now (2013) but still reasonably relevant:

LiamPa··on Bomb squad warning over magnet fishing
Seen people do this on the Thames although they are asking for trouble. We even have 1400 tonnes of explosives just waiting to explode at the entrance:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Richard_Montgomery?wprov=sf...

> According to a BBC news report in 1970,[12] it was determined that if the wreck of Richard Montgomery exploded, it would throw a 1,000-foot-wide (300 m) column of water and debris nearly 10,000 feet (3,000 m) into the air and generate a wave 16 feet (5 m) high. Almost every window in Sheerness (pop. circa 20,000) would be broken and buildings would be damaged by the blast. However, news reports in May 2012 (including one by BBC Kent) stated that the wave could be about 4 feet (1 m) high, which although lower than previous estimates would be enough to cause flooding in some coastal settlements.

LiamPa··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2018)
> The API will be opened once we are confident the exchange and its ecosystem can sustain the flux.

I think this is the problem, you could wait an iternaty for this to occur / I am not sure how you are going to calculate it. You are delaying the inevitable and if you ask me the longer you leave it the worse it will be.

I am all for a competitor to Betfair but it’s not going to be smarkets if the API stays closed and market makers are treated like god. The ‘fair market price’ / ‘errounous trade’ policy is rediculous, do any of you bet / trade?
