LeonidBugaev··on Show HN: Get a Slack message when your brand is mentioned on HN
Worth noticing that HN API provided by https://hn.algolia.com and Reddit have built-in search API as well.
LeonidBugaev··on Show HN: Get a Slack message when your brand is mentioned on HN
Do not wanna be that guy, but you can do that with Zapier and way more https://zapier.com/zapbook/zaps/675/post-message-slack-when-...

We (tyk.io) use Slack notifications with Zapier for various searches on HN, Reddit, Twitter, Stackoverflow or even Google Alerts (the last one use built-in Slack `/feed` feature).

LeonidBugaev··on Show HN: A microservice that makes adding authentication to your app easy
Well, personally I prefer using something like https://github.com/TykTechnologies/tyk which basically API Gateway, and in addition to auth (not only oAuth), also adds stuff like policies across multiple API's and rate-limiting and quotas.
LeonidBugaev··on GitHub commit search: “remove password”
If you found a similar mistake in your repository, you can delete commit from history using: `git rebase --onto <commit-id>^ <commit-id>`. Or if you want actually rewrite it, see git rebase -i` documentation.
LeonidBugaev··on Gitlab is down
Hey, where is the live video of this incident? :sarcasm:
LeonidBugaev··on New GitHub Terms of Service
I'm really curious if new "Scrapping" terms apply to API usage.
LeonidBugaev··on GitLab Database Incident – Live Report
Not so long ago GitLab decided to move from using AWS Cloud to managing own hardware. I wonder if such situation could happen if they used managed Postgres with automatic backups. Most of us use Cloud because OP's is hard, and human related risks are too high.
LeonidBugaev··on It's not too late for slow parenting
Learning how to be slow in our extremely fast lives, is probably one of the important skill you can develop in you and your kids.
LeonidBugaev··on GitHub lost $66M in nine months of 2016
Analytics, Reporting, Ad management and Biding platform, Fraud detection, and way more.

This basic CRUD app is just user-facing thing, and now remember that they are making money not because of you, but because of publishers. This is where main functionality is.

LeonidBugaev··on Visual Studio Code 1.8
Worth noticing that VSCode currently have the biggest ever active community on Github https://github.com/Microsoft/vscode/issues/17125

Over 1500 people, monthly, contribute to the project!

LeonidBugaev··on Ask HN: Senior developers, what would you tell a younger you?
* Learn to be a better writer from start

* People are more important than code

* Don't fall in love with specific technology

* Do not rush, force yourself to slow down

LeonidBugaev··on Show HN: Open-source projects leaderboard
Primary niche is the companies which are based on open-source products
LeonidBugaev··on Show HN: Open-source projects leaderboard
Hello, everyone!

Do really stars on Github matter?

When you evaluate what to use or learn, the most important part is the active community.

I created this leaderboard to show you what are really HOT right now, and how big community is.

The bigger post is coming.

LeonidBugaev··on Rust: 128 bit integers preparing to be released
If you are using default library IPv4 addresses stores as [16]byte: https://golang.org/src/net/ip.go
LeonidBugaev··on Ask HN: What projects are you currently working on?
Building http://ossmetrics.com/ - Github Analytics and Lead research platform for open-source businesses.

I started working on it in parallel with my OSS business https://goreplay.org because Github literally does not give you any KPI's. The number of stars, won't tell you anything.

There is so many data generated by open source projects, and if used properly it can give you a huge bonus.

Did not launch yet, but some cool stuff coming soon :)

LeonidBugaev··on LinkedIn is now officially blocked in Russia
Worth noticing that court blocked only HTTP version "http://www.linkedin.com/", HTTPS works just fine :)

However some providers, who had no smart hardware, may block by IP instead of URL, and https version will be blocked as well (not my case).

LeonidBugaev··on How Japan Prepares Its Children for Independence
While it is impressive, do not forget that everything that happens in childhood, projects to your adult life, and not always in a good way.

Japan have so many problems right now: a lot of people with sociopathy, problems with demographics and so on.

While Japan has a unique approach, who knows, maybe lack of supervising and attention at such young age cause such issues.

In my view, Japan is the edge case, and there should be the more balanced approach.

LeonidBugaev··on All New Amazon Echo Dot
Well, I guess one of the most interesting things hidden in then Q&A section:

> Comes with 90 day warranty vs first gen had 1 year

> Optional 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year extended warranty available for U.S. customers sold separately.

LeonidBugaev··on gRPC: Internet-scale RPC framework is now 1.0
I'll try to jump on the plane, and announce that latest GoReplay version now supports Thrift and ProtocolBuffers.

So if you are looking to load testing (or integration testing) for gRPC based apps check https://goreplay.org

LeonidBugaev··on CHIP $9 Computer
Can I start using CHIP without a display? Like ssh access when connected to USB or via Bluetooth?
LeonidBugaev··on Introducing yakbak: Record and playback HTTP interactions in Node.js
`yakbak` is about service virtualization, to help you remove 3-rd party dependencies for your tests, and replace them with recorded responses.

`diffy` is a reverse proxy which multiplex requests to multiple endpoints, compare differences and detect regressions between responses.

`gor` is about interception your production traffic (it is not a proxy, more like a network analyzer), continuously, and replaying it on demand to your test environments (you can modify and filter this traffic using various ways).

Hope it helps.

PS. I'm Gor author.

LeonidBugaev··on Gor — Test your system with real data
Thank you! I think one of the major differences here is that Gor is not not a proxy, you do not have to put 3-rd party tool to your critical production path. Gor intercepts traffic and not affect your app - way more safe. Also betamax is more a tool for service virtualization, rather then for continuous regression testing, not talking about load testing. But it is still cool!

Thank you!

LeonidBugaev··on Gor — Test your system with real data
Well, it does not really depend if you doing support by mail or phone, you still spend developer time. For most of the cases 4 hours is more then enough, but for example if you app require complex middleware, and you want me to help write it, it may take longer then 4 hours. If so I can provide additional support on hourly basis.
LeonidBugaev··on Gor — Test your system with real data
Thank you! May I wonder which company you represent?
LeonidBugaev··on Gor — Test your system with real data
Good point! Well, deciding which features go to OSS version or paid is tricky, and you will never make anyone happy. But i try to decide based on demand, the more specific feature is, the bigger chance it will be in Pro version.

Note that you can replay traffic to SSL endpoint, but SSL interception only in Pro. SL interception is tricky, and in most cases application provide SSL through proxy, so you can intercept origin with Gor.

Thank you!

You probably talking about service virtualization. I have some plans to dig into this space, but later. For now check this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_virtualization and http://hoverfly.io/ in particular.
LeonidBugaev··on Gor — Test your system with real data
Thank you! Mike Perham and Sidekiq in particual was main inspiration for me to start working on Gor full time and introduce Pro version.
LeonidBugaev··on Gor — Test your system with real data
Author here :)

I'll be frank it's hard to choose name and not to offend anyone. This porno thing at least fun :)

Project is more then 3 years old, not sure if its even possible to change name and not dramatically affect SEO. But who knows I may consider it.
