Leomuck··on France's government is ditching Windows for Linux, says US tech a strategic risk
I think you're right. Even though France might not have done much yet, it's a sign many people will read about and maybe think Linux is a good alternative. That's a win in my book.

AI and cloud are another thing altogether. Mistral is alright, open-source AI models are alright, but overall I think they can't compete yet. And I don't think there are fully capable cloud alternatives to AWS, Azure and Google Cloud yet. EU pushing Nextcloud-based alternatives really doesn't fuel confidence honestly. I mean Nextcloud is fine, but that's not the big alternative push we need here.

Leomuck··on France's government is ditching Windows for Linux, says US tech a strategic risk
Wait, do we not want incompetent users on Linux? That's a weird take. Linux is not for elite technologically profound users, it's for everybody. If things don't work for non-technical users, we should strive to make it better?

Europe as a whole doesn't have or not have a spine.. it'a a huge, complicated accumulation of interests with an insane bureaucratic apparatus behind it.
Leomuck··on France's government is ditching Windows for Linux, says US tech a strategic risk
Fair. But also I look at it as a chance. We get to fix lots of bugs. Bugs that bad actors can't use anymore.

Microsoft is a strategic risk for everybody, looking at their track records the last few years.. I don't love Linux, but I like it. It's no-bullshit. It doesn't always do everything perfectly, but it has the right mindset. It doesn't want to screw me over.

Maybe, but chips cannot hold you hostage during work. I don't care where things are built (except when they are built somewhere where human rights are being treated like shit), software is what locks you into whatever bullshit the company decides on, not chips. So it is a good step I think. We don't have to be all "we don't use anything from outside the EU" - why? Some countries are better than others at stuff. Fair enough. The movement is about moving away from software monopolies that decide on what you can and can't do, not about having everything inside a certain geographical location.
Leomuck··on The future of everything is lies, I guess – Part 5: Annoyances
So basically more ways of trying to make people buy things, do things, think things than before? I feel like our whole world more and more circulates around manipulation and the absence of truth and discourse.

Then again, I do think LLMs are an incredible technological achievement. The issue is not so much what they do or that they exist, but how they are utilized. Right now, they are utilized to further the class divide between rich and poor.

Who are we to trust in the future? Not big companies, not the state, not LLMs. Time to organize around groups and collectives that we know we can trust and that we know have our wellbeing in mind.

Leomuck··on Tesla's cabin camera estimates driver age in latest software update
So what the hell do they do this for? So you own a car that analyzes your face? Why? Can't we just be left alone? Also, all efforts in this direction set the step-stone to mass-surveillance. But whatever, tech doesn't care about the privacy of people.
Leomuck··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
Uff. Hard thread to comment on.

I'm fairly radical in my opinion regarding AI, moreso AI companies. AI is a fascinating thing, but it's abused by capitalism to be something it is not and shoulnd't be, to be sold to people who don't need it and to "revolutionize" a world that didn't ask for it. Most importantly, who (in a democratic sense) elected those tech leaders to make decisions that influence all our lifes? Those very tech CEOs are so far away from normal-human-life and I find it digusting.

Still, the way to combat this is not violence. It won't help anything, since there are enough people to fill the roles. More importantly though, as much as I personally hate Sam Altman, he hasn't done anything specifically targeting individuals. You might call him a psychopath, an illusionist or whatever, but he doesn't seem to be trying to make peoples life worse. He might want to do his life better and that's egotistical, but you know that's the world we live in. Many people are egotistical. I would see Sam Altman more as a symptom of the general societal developments. If we don't like what's happening, we have to fight what's happening. Trying to kill people (and especially innocent ones!) is so far away from a solution and from the right thing to do. Post shit about him on the internet, hate what he does, but attack his family? Man, I don't think that should be our level of moral compass.

I do very much understand the frustration. But that's not the right path. He might be scum, but he has as much right to live as everybody else. If we don't like what he's doing, we have to fight it - via discourse, collective engagement, whatever.

Edit: I did read that the molotow was thrown at the entrance gate. From what I gather, entrance gates of huge mansions do not actually pose a threat to people. So it could be read as more of a political message than an actual attack on people. I could understand that somehow given the limited means normal people have to get heard. Still, I don't think that does anything positive.

Leomuck··on Quien – A better WHOIS lookup tool
Of course you could, but if it was indeed vibe-coded in a weekend, why wouldn't you want to start from scratch to make sure everything is up to your standards (especially security)?

I'm definitely not going to jump in on a vibe-coded project. I'd much rather start from scratch if I found the use-case to be relevant.

Not to say vibe-coded projects can't be alright. If the engineer behind it knows their stuff, it's fine to me. But we don't know that. So to get a general idea, I think it's fair to ask how this was done.

Leomuck··on Artemis II safely splashes down
Fake news?? I've heard a radio item today where they informed that the internet has a lot of conspiracy theories that Artemis isn't real, images are AI fakes and reports are completely made up. They then proceeded to post a "prove" image which was definitely AI since one of the people only had one arm. lol. Anyway, glad it worked out. I do think that somehow we have more important issues to solve than discovering the moon, but whatever.
Leomuck··on South Korea introduces universal basic mobile data access
Crazy, I've never heard of such a plan anywhere. But given how essential the internet is to everything we do on a daily basis, that makes a lot of sense. However, I would like to see the existing situation that lead to this decision. Were there many people who couldn't do things anymore due to lacking internet access? Was there public pressure to do this or did they just think it a good idea?

My assumption so far was that there are those who use the internet, they're usually fine, and those that don't - they won't benefit much. But no idea about South Korea. Anyway, cheaper and unlimited access is always a good idea!

Leomuck··on The Importance of Being Idle
Boy does that resonate with my current feeling. I've spent the last maybe 18 months constantly working, paid, non-paid, voluntary work, side-projects, etc. I almost feel like I'm confusing myself with the amount of work/different projects I have. All while whenever I find an hour or two to just sit idle in the sun, I feel the very best, happy almost. No, I have nothing to show for this time, I can't go to bed with the feeling I've achieved something, I wasn't productive. But I feel.. good?

We have all learned (especially men I think) that we define parts of ourselves through what we achieve. However, is that a good idea? Also, what counts towards that goal? Did I achieve something if I support a friend that struggles? Or do I only achieve something that can be added to my CV? Who am I trying to show what about me?

I absolutely love the idea of being idle. It strictly goes againt current societal developments, but I think it would do a lot of good for a lot of people. We don't have to perform all the time, we don't have to be perfect all the time. What's the end-goal anyway? Rich people, statistically speaking, are not more happy. Managers with 60 hours a week often suffer from depression or burnout. The only two valid reasons in my mind to work hard are: 1. bring in enough money to live comfortably (which unfortunately isn't achievable for many) and 2. do good for society. Meanwhile, most people are struggling to even get by and tech CEOs can buy a new fancy car every day and tell us how to deal with the disruptions they cause? They tell us how we can save the economy? Why us? What did we do for the economy to be bad? Did we start wars, increase the cost of oil, create a self-inflicted banking crisis? What's it to us anyway? We're the ones suffering in the end, regardless of what we do.

I also find it quite irritating that the comments started discussing geopolitical power conflicts regarding idleness.

Anyway, I'm going to shut down my computer now and enjoy the sun. Happy idleness guys!

Leomuck··on Claude Code Down
Probably OpenCode, also works with Claude.
Leomuck··on Show HN: I built a tiny LLM to demystify how language models work
Wow that is such a cool idea! And honestly very much needed. LLMs seem to be this blackbox nobody understands. So I love every effort to make that whole thing less mysterious. I will definitely have a look at dabbling with this, may it not be a goldfish LLM :)
Leomuck··on OpenClaw privilege escalation vulnerability
Well, such things were to be expected. It's easy to bash on all the people who haven't gotten the necessary IT understanding of securing such things. Of course, it's uber-dumb to run an unprotected instance. But at the same time, it's also quite cool that so many people can do interesting IT stuff now. I'm thinking basically it's a trade-off. Be able to do great stuff, live with the consequences of doing that without proper training. Like repairing your car yourself. You might have fun doing it, it might get you somewhere, but you have to accept that if you have no idea about cars, you just introduced a pretty big risk into your life (say if you replaced the brakes or something). But yea, security, privacy, fighting climate change, all very much on the decline - humans doing cool things, ignoring important things - we'll have to live with the consequences.
Leomuck··on Samsung Magician disk utility takes 18 steps and two reboots to uninstall
Man, that is actually hilarious. Also reminds you that "Big Tech" doesn't necessarily build great stuff. They sell well, but are they built well? I don't even want to know how Microslops stuff looks behind the scenes :)
Leomuck··on The more evidence behind a therapy, the less the public trusts it
I feel like distrust in general is on the rise. We used to just acknowledge that in some areas we have no idea. Therefore, we'd trust others who do. With the internet in its current state, everybody seems to have an idea all whilst it becomes more and more apparent that big institutions might not only have your wellbeing in mind. So we become frustrated with the fact that we can't seem to trust one thing, search comfort in communities whilst forgetting that we probably shouldn't trust them blindly as well. So who do we trust? Might just be easier to follow the ideas of likeminded people or that influencer you find cool than the big pharma systems. The sadest thing is, those influencers also want to make money off of you. Who cares about humans anymore? I think it's justified that everybody gets confused in this world..
Leomuck··on Improving my focus by giving up my big monitor
Interesting take. I regularly switch between just the laptop and my 3 monitor setup. Sometimes I feel like I could use a 4th one because there is just so much stuff to look at when developing. When I get to my laptop I sometimes feel like I can't be really productive on it. Having to tab all the time is not in itself an issue, but I keep getting lost when I have multiple instances of an app open - e.g. IDE. Say you have 3 projects open, I feel like I keep tabbing to the wrong one all the time.

But overall, I do like the idea that you don't actually have to see everything at once. Also takes focus away I guess. I would love to see a study on this which tries to actually measure this.

Leomuck··on Marketing for Founders
Dude, thanks for this! I'll definitely look through these. I have been struggling with marketing the last months. I've developed a free, privacy-focused productivity app, but I don't want to sell it, myself or people for it. So I have been thinking a lot about "how can I tell people about something I've built and that I like without beeing one of those startup dudes". Maybe a few of those links can help, definitely a cool collection!
Leomuck··on Hostile Volume – A game about adjusting volume with intentionally bad UI
What the hell. I got so annoyed at level 5 I had to quit :D But I love the idea. It can actually teach you a lot of things about UI design.
Leomuck··on Allow me to get to know you, mistakes and all
Also, I think not-great English does not prohibit you from being you, being competent. Humans have a longstanding history of communicating with limited means. It never stopped us from getting things done.
Leomuck··on Allow me to get to know you, mistakes and all
I do agree on that take. I find AI to be most useful as a sparing partner for my thought process. I also agree with the other commenter that it, of course, can also influence your thought process. We have to stay aware of that and try to stay in control of that conversation.
Leomuck··on Allow me to get to know you, mistakes and all
I very much agree with this. I had several experiences where I wanted to express something in a very particular way, told a LLM about it, and what came out was just so generic that it really wasn't authentic. It didn't represent me at all, not the morals I have, not the way I talk, not the way I want to express things. I do think more and more that authenticity and character are what we need to preserve with all power we have if we don't want the internet to become just a gateway for generic back and forth. After all, the internet was introduced so humans could connect and share.
Leomuck··on Allow me to get to know you, mistakes and all
There is already studies that confirm your fear, I think. They found that mainstream language is changing due to AI. Certain words get used proportionally more than before, etc. Also, if you check out some reddits, it's crazy how generic many things are. Because of AI. I do agree wholeheartedly that we need to read more. And also, that AI can also be a very cool tool for giving some people more power in a way.
