LdSGSgvupDV··on Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought
According to divorce rate, I think it is reasonable to choose "have a career" first. At least, it would be financially independent.
LdSGSgvupDV··on Senate passes bipartisan bill to subsidize U.S.-made semiconductor chips
It won't work. Most of them would go to software industry after graduated.
LdSGSgvupDV··on Purdue Starts Comprehensive Semiconductor Degree Programs in U.S.
Well. I don't get the point of this program. Did they want to ease the semiconductor supply chain problem? I got my master degree on the field of condensed matter. In the past, our group has strong link to the semiconductor industry. Right now, there are more and more classmates tend to change the field from hardware to software after they graduated.

WLB just sucks in semiconductor industry.

LdSGSgvupDV··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
Yep. Accelerate the global warming for inefficient waste on local fab and pollute the environment globally. For the national security, we could sacrifice all countries including ourself. Hillarius.
LdSGSgvupDV··on Web3 is centralized and inefficient
Sound like "pointer" to me.
LdSGSgvupDV··on Why is the Zoom app listening on my microphone when not in a meeting?
For mac, I use little snitch to block all unwanted outgoing streaming include connection to Apple. It is kind of weird that some app keeps connecting to somewhere when I don't need it. The outcome is that some apps might be buggy. For example, Chrome would randomly crash with error code 11 which might be the failure of connecting to their auto-updating server. Vscode might crash with error code 5 also, but I'm not sure if it comes from the network blocking or not.

Even if it is software, I don't want automatically updating. The problem introduced by automatically updating is higher than the problem they fixed in my experience.

For example, windows updating. There was an updating when professor gave the talk in class. Windows updating popped out. There is no way for professor to stop the updating. He missed the chance and windows already went into blue updating screen. So, We had a break, and professor went to his office to find another computer.

Another problem is that automatically updating almost always runs silently. When I played online game and the game went laggy, I always tabbed out to see what happened with resource monitor. It is easy to find out there is whatever updating using CPU or bandwidth.

I feel updating just like legally raping my device. Oh. It is OUR device.

But, this small subset is what company urges to have. If they are willing to lower down the baseline, there are still quite many engineers around the world.

Problem might be the network traffic. Maybe they could not afford the 4K streaming if there are so many people use it.

This. The real problem is not communication. It is the online searchability of the issues and source code.

Is there really a lot of spam? In my experience, I just saw a robot subscription storm once in the past year at a small streamer (~100 people). I watch twitch roughly 3hr+/day.
LdSGSgvupDV··on Amazon EC2 M1 Mac Instances
This is why I don't like to sign my credit card to any subscription service or anything similar. There is almost no way to delete the credit card, and it is hard to notice the charging before it happened. We should have legislation to make them offer one-shot charging without storing my payment information. Pay as my budget. Shutdown if exceed.
LdSGSgvupDV··on TSMC “Apple-first” 3nm policy leads to AMD and Qualcomm mutiny
You are right. We should have a world level regulation on US dollar or any other currency also. QE for every countries should be regulated by the whole world not FED or central bank in a single country.
LdSGSgvupDV··on TSMC “Apple-first” 3nm policy leads to AMD and Qualcomm mutiny
Lack of cheap, well-trained, and educated STEM people who could bear extremely bad work-life-balance and promised profit for more than ten years to cover the cost of scaling up.
LdSGSgvupDV··on TSMC “Apple-first” 3nm policy leads to AMD and Qualcomm mutiny
I don't think that would work. Even if they open their IP. Who would like to put billions of money into fabs for a maybe 2-3 years of shortage? How to guarantee this would success? How to cover the cost after shortage?

There are plenty of crucial industries. Lots of them are in US, Europe, and Japan. Would they open their IP? No. The only way to break that situation is starting the war commercially or physically just like how US bullied Japan in 80s and China right now.

How to define "feel pain"? It is quite difficult and varies from person to person. I have some memories when I'm 1~3 years old. I can not "feel" any physical and mental pain at all but I might response to that pain event by crying. There is no specific meaning for crying. Maybe just like breathing?

One memory is that I hit my head on a rough rock when I was at the age of learning walking and little blood flowed through my forehead. In that time, I didn't feel any pain and was curious on why adults and old sister were so "nervous". In my view, they spoke loudly than usual and rushed to me. I didn't know what they were talking about but I could feel they feared for something.

Another memory is that I shot myself on breast by gas gun, and got bruise (I didn't notice that after I grew up and my parents told me). The age might be 2~4 years old. The same as first one, I did not feel any pain but the fear in adults.

ps: When I was 6~7 years old, I shot myself with air gun on arm again. This time I felt the pain. That was fucking hurt.

LdSGSgvupDV··on Ask HN: How is the “metaverse” concept different from the Second Life boom?
> Further, VR does not work well for switching - you can't be in VR and scribble notes at the same time.

In VRChat, you could write something in the air by hands, or even play the piano. The problem might be the user experience is not as good as real world hand writing/typing, and there is no physical feedback when writing/typing. That might make people feel weird.

LdSGSgvupDV··on Sony to join TSMC on new $7B chip plant in Japan
If war did not end up quickly, all of the trade in the Western Pacific might be blocked. Japan as an upstream manufacturer of semiconductor industry might be affected by this, and needs to seek for a new channel for shipping (maybe Northeast Passage). TSMC-whatever would have raw material shortage.

LdSGSgvupDV··on We need to take CO2 out of the sky
Uh... I replied to OP which is for individual.

In the scale of country, East Asia did quite well without any policies (exclude China, they have a special policy on it). Just keep raising the price of estate, and then birth rate would drop and never come back.

For the part of energy, according to the EPA report[1], the emissions by electricity and heat are around 25% in total. If we want to reduce 20% in total, we need to close 80% of fossil plants. For me, it is nearly impossible. There are some countries may not have the land or safe area to place nuclear/renewable plants. (e.g. Singapore...) I know there is a plan for Singapore to buy the clean solar energy from Australia, but it only covers 1/5 of the consumption. Also, there must be security issues for transferring power between countries.

LdSGSgvupDV··on We need to take CO2 out of the sky
At least, workable and easy.

Is there any solution could really reduce around 20%? (Not to mention more than 20% and not to transfer the emission to other countries)

LdSGSgvupDV··on We need to take CO2 out of the sky
I have a mind-blowing idea. Don't have children...?

Birth rate decrease -> demand decrease -> CO2 decrease

If we have the same birth rate as Korea or Japan, the population would drop more than 20% in 50 years according to the population prediction in these two countries. This means lots of demand would not need anymore, and might be the best practice which could be done by individual.
