LaurentS··on Ask HN: Any good FOSS alternative to Google's reCAPTCHA?
Not exactly answering the question, but I recently used aliexpress.com and their captcha system is super easy: it shows a sliding button like the one to answer a call on a phone. The prompt just asks you to slide it to validate your input. Not sure how it works, but it sure is a much better UX than when I have to spend 3 minutes identifying for hydrants. Maybe we could make a FLOSS version of it?

The cable was tagged with its name, it was very easy to read, probably brand new
LaurentS··on 75-year-old woman with shovel accidentally took down Armenia's internet (2011)
A few years ago, while strolling along the beach in Myanmar, I happened upon SeaMeWe-5, which was accessible to anyone willing to peek into a manhole (why I peeked down that manhole, I'll never know). At the time, the cable was pumping about 90% of the country's internet traffic, if I recall correctly. I thought it was quite worrying that it was so unprotected... With a shovel, I could have been that woman too. https://www.submarinecablemap.com/#/landing-point/ngwe-saung...
LaurentS··on Show HN: Building an open-source language-learning platform
Hi kantord, congratulations on the site! I tried something similar about 10 years ago, called wikibabel. I then joined with another site called wikiotics.org. We were very focused on libre everything. In the end, we gave up after several years, but our content is still up and we've been looking for a new home for it. Please take a look and see if any of it would be useful for you (we had built a bunch of cards very similar to your demo lesson). We had stuff in a few dozen languages, including audio recordings (mostly of low quality). I've moved on, but I still love the goal, and would be happy to share some feedback on the experience if you want (contact on my profile page).

In short:

- focus on what the user wants, not the tech.

- is English->Spanish the best language pair to start with? You're directly competing with the giants like Duolingo. I tried to learn Burmese a few years back, I would have loved to find something like this for that niche.

Good luck!

LaurentS··on Gmail marking email from me as spam
I have all my mailboxes with gandi.net. Each domain you buy from them comes with 2 fully managed emails, and I think 3GB storage each, for just over $1/month. I basically never get spam, nor blocked emails. They have 2 webmail interfaces too, but I don't use them. As a bonus, gandi financially supports a ton of open source projects, which never hurts.
LaurentS··on Why is Stack Overflow trying to start audio?
I actually wonder about this. SO's typical user is tech-savvy, and I would imagine many access the site with adblockers on (I do). So I suspect my value to the site in terms of ads is close to zero. I would happily pay a monthly subscription to know that the service will remain, given how much value I derive from it, if that gave me the assurance that they won't track me with ads/cookies/fingerprinting.

Their other income is from job ads, and I guess the value is that they have lots of data points about their logged in users (with scores high enough to imply they've interacted with the site a fair bit), in the form of what is posted, worth more than the aggregated list of websites that a user sees (as reported by ads).

I'd love to know more about this, as I have very little understanding of the economics of serving targeted ads. How much can they be making from ads?

LaurentS··on WhatsApp puts limit on message forwarding to fight fake news
I know someone who looked into the fake propaganda spread around social networks in Myanmar (WhatsApp is essentially not used there, but Facebook and Viber are the big ones). It turned out it was virtually impossible to trace the origin of messages because most people were copy/pasting messages instead of forwarding them. Which makes me wonder how much of an impact is actually expected of this. The cynic in me worries that it may be a way for the platform to wash its hands...
LaurentS··on The 773M Record “Collection #1” Data Breach
Same here. I had never heard of them. Turns out they're a YC'15 startup (https://www.apollo.io/company/). There are no passwords in the data they lost according to HIBP. They seem to collect personal data from various sources and help other companies increase sales.

LaurentS··on Italy Wikipedia shuts down in protest at proposed EU copyright law
From my limited experience with calling MEPs, they don't always get the entire picture. Who could blame them for not being experts in web, nuclear energy, agricultural policies and more all at the same time? One way to help them is by calling them up and explaining our views on topics we care about. Mass emailing doesn't seem to do more than clog their spam filters, but a phone call actually seems to at least be listened to, if not acted on.

I've just put together a simple list of MEPs and their voting intentions (far from complete, it's only the few I've heard about more or less directly). It would be great if you can add what you've heard from MEPs you've spoken to. If anything, it may help focus efforts when speaking to MEPs. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1A8H7OQfyjzdn8RhQ7ifw...
