LasEspuelas··on A Friendly Introduction to Racket
There is this https://remember.defn.io/

You can read the about it here: https://defn.io/2020/01/04/remember-internals/

LasEspuelas··on Show HN: I made an emergency page for my family
You have to set up those backup codes and keep them in your wallet or somewhere independent of your phone and in your person at all times.
LasEspuelas··on I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?
Hmm... We ask riddles for fun and there is almost an expectation that a good riddle will yield a wrong answer.
LasEspuelas··on I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?
You would never ask a human this question. Right?
LasEspuelas··on US Immigration on the Easiest Setting
What year was this? I also did everything on my own after marrying an American citizen (2010-15) and I didn't have to do anything so extreme!
LasEspuelas··on 25 Years of Wikipedia
This is the comment on the Mother Jones entry: "There is consensus that Mother Jones is generally reliable. Almost all editors consider Mother Jones a biased source, so its statements (particularly on political topics) may need to be attributed. Consider whether content from this publication constitutes due weight before citing it in an article."

They acknowledge it is a biased source and they make a distinction between reliability and bias. Not familiar with the publication.

LasEspuelas··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
This seems like the actual work of the article: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.5c13908

And the superbase is 1,5,7-triazabicyclo [4.3.0] non-6-ene

It is an anime based technology. Other amines in water-based solutions also get regenerated at about <200C. It is great to find new molecules to do this work but as I usual, these marketing articles sensationalize the actual work.

LasEspuelas··on MIT Missing Semester 2026
There should be something like this available for any student at University, regardless of field. Perhaps less geared towards programming tasks but basic computing productivity.
LasEspuelas··on Cheap yet ultrapure titanium might enable widespread use in industry (2024)
Agreed. The original paper states that they have a technique to remove oxygen from the surface of titanium. If that is the case, grinding could be viable. How hard is it to grind titanium?
LasEspuelas··on Cheap yet ultrapure titanium might enable widespread use in industry (2024)
Everything is urgent: "There is thus an urgent need to develop a high-speed and efficient refining method to realize the mass production of low-cost Ti."
LasEspuelas··on AI tools are spotting errors in research papers: inside a growing movement
Deploying this on already published work is probably a bad idea. But what is wrong with working with such tools on submission and review?
LasEspuelas··on Improving Emacs Isearch Usability with Transient
The fact that ctrl+c copies on my computer and I can expect the same at my mom's computer or my friend's computer seems like a blessing not a curse.
LasEspuelas··on The Fediverse is an opportunity learned societies can't ignore
In my experience open access still includes a big publisher sucking up tons of money. It is just money paid up front by authors. Do you have an example of open access were that is not the case?
LasEspuelas··on Who is responsible for grade inflation at Yale?
Thank you! I don't know what is happening lately but every X embed is broken for me in Firefox Mobile with an ad blocker enabled.
LasEspuelas··on The dead children we must see
A history of led in gasoline: https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/secret-history-lea...
LasEspuelas··on I thought I wanted to be a professor, then I served on a hiring committee (2021)
This is such a generalization that I deem it devoid of value. Besides the fact that not all hiring decisions happen that way, R1 institutions are not the only ones around. If you have a passion for teaching and want to stay engaged in research, there are other options like primarily undergraduate institutions. There are good reasons to prefer industrial posts to academia, and vice versa.
LasEspuelas··on Ask HN: How do you find high quality mobile games?
I found these by searching and exploring and in my opinion they are good games for mobile (Android):

* Retro Bowl and others by the same dev * Rusted Warfare for an RTS. * Spent many hours on Andors Trail before reaching the current end * Euclidea is fun if you are geometrically inclined

All these found through browsing and searching.

LasEspuelas··on Excel never dies (2021)
This is something I faced in both Excel and GSheets (when working with formulae only). That is the need to repeat myself occasionally.
LasEspuelas··on Excel never dies (2021)
I would love to understand more what limitations you faced with GSheets that are non-existent in Excel. I used to think the same but then I built some pretty complex computations in GSheets that I could not easily replicate in Excel. And U have built some complex stuff in both.
LasEspuelas··on Ask HN: CS grad who barely knows any CS
As a professor of none-software engineering, I can tell you that most engineering students that graduate have similar feelings. You have just been exposed to a bunch of topics in CS at various depths. You now know what you know (not much) and what you don't. You are well prepared to learn.
LasEspuelas··on So you want to invent a nuclear weapon
Love the writing style here. Way to present a very complex process in a relatively accessible fashion.
LasEspuelas··on ‘Zero-click’ hacks are growing in popularity
What is "tight ANSI C"?
LasEspuelas··on The new hire who showed up is not the same person we interviewed
Bizarre! Possibly related phenomenon, recently noticed that a bunch of students who dropped out or never finished our program are working as engineers (non-software) in big multinational firms. Does nobody check a transcript anymore?
LasEspuelas··on Royal Society cautions against censorship of scientific misinformation online
Not sure what you are saying, but I do believe that we scientist need an extra big dose of humility and we need to learn how to better accept when we are wrong.
LasEspuelas··on Royal Society cautions against censorship of scientific misinformation online
I also disagree. Nobody documents or publicizes the small labs doing small "useless" stuff. The kind of stuff that seems irrelevant but that slowly piles into a mountain of new information. As a PHD myself, many times I thought to myself: "this research is quite insignificant" and what we found was truly small potatoes, but I can only hope that, in the aggregate, all of us that did small stuff during that period advanced science in significant ways.
LasEspuelas··on Wrapping Up 2021. Leaving C++
Sounds like this person's passion is the language. And that she has failed to bend it to her liking. Reading through her post, and just based on it, I would guess she has the skills and opinions to create her own language and potentially demostrarte why her vision is worthwhile.
LasEspuelas··on Creating Innovative Game Experiences: The Making of RedWaterOne
Messed up the link. Apologies. Not sure if someone can fix. https://concepts.app/en/stories/creating-innovative-game-exp...
LasEspuelas··on /tap – Powerful and customizable note-taking system
I'm talking about a bunch of parents and a teacher having long group sms conversations. I feel it super clunky.
LasEspuelas··on /tap – Powerful and customizable note-taking system
I would love to introduce you to every one of the group sms monstrosities that arise every time my children join a new activity. Why do people insist on doing this?
LasEspuelas··on Scripting languages of the future
Also, I would think a mention of Julia would have happened in the tunability section.
