LandoCalrissian··on They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45 (1955)
President is unilaterally shutting down federal agencies. If this goes on there really isn't a constitution anymore, not in practice anyway.
LandoCalrissian··on DeepSeek releases Janus Pro, a text-to-image generator [pdf]
Appreciate the comments, found them very insightful.
LandoCalrissian··on Hacking Subaru: Tracking and Controlling Cars via the Starlink Admin Panel
Awesome, thank you. Seems pretty straight forward.
LandoCalrissian··on Ham Radio All-in-One-Cable
Oh that is cool, I have a really janky setup to do packet radio with my handheld and this would be awesome for that.
LandoCalrissian··on The case for single-stair multifamily
Why not get rid of all fire safety protections? We can really get moving then. The ADA is pretty onerous, if we just ignore that we can have it up in half the time! I don't REALLY need all that electrical grounding in my house, all that extra copper adds up you know, think of how many more houses we could build without it?
LandoCalrissian··on Binance founder Changpeng Zhao agrees to step down, plead guilty
Pretty great example of Hacker News when the top comment is "They should have done more crime but in a different way."
LandoCalrissian··on Arduino raises $22M Series B round
"This investment will allow us to further fuel our transformational platform initiative for professional customers, lowering the barriers to entry in IoT and AI by providing a continuum from hardware to Cloud"

That entire sentence makes me want to jump off a bridge.

LandoCalrissian··on SVB Used Former McCarthy Staffers to Weaken Regulations, Lobby FDIC
I can't remember all the specifics, but after the 2008 crash banks with a certain levels of holding have to pass stress test showing they can survive scenarios like this. I think the old limit was 50 billion but go changed to I think 150 billion which puts SVB below the threshold for the stress test.
LandoCalrissian··on Why are McDonald’s Self Service Kiosks so hackable?
I caught one of the self checkouts rebooting at my local grocery store and it was still running Windows XP.
LandoCalrissian··on Smith Chart
I still you the smith chart on my NanoVNA for ham radio.
LandoCalrissian··on DoorDash Changes Tipping Model After Uproar
Some states don't have a tip credit like Minnesota. They get minimum wage no matter what, plus tips.
LandoCalrissian··on DoorDash Changes Tipping Model After Uproar
I don't think that justifies wage theft.
LandoCalrissian··on Bitcoin mining on an Apollo Guidance Computer
CuriousMarc's series on the AGC restoration has been really cool to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KSahAoOLdU&list=PL-_93BVApb...
LandoCalrissian··on Crypto Market Roiled by New Allegations Against Tether, Bitfinex
I'm pretty sure most people here understand how fractional banking works. Tether isn't a bank, it's claiming to be a currency, and not only that but one that is fully backed by the reserves of their US dollars.

This is like a government claiming they lost their most sovereign currency and have no idea where it went.

LandoCalrissian··on Crypto Market Roiled by New Allegations Against Tether, Bitfinex
The books are all seriously cooked. There are few honest actors and it's shocking to me how many people are still willing to play the game.
LandoCalrissian··on Crypto Market Roiled by New Allegations Against Tether, Bitfinex
They are literally making those tethers out of thin air, you know that right? It's not backed 1 to 1 at all and this report clearly calls it out.
LandoCalrissian··on Johnny-Five v1.0 – JavaScript Robotics and IoT Framework
They have increased board support quite a bit since the last time I checked it out, very cool.
LandoCalrissian··on Magic Leap One Creator's Edition First Look
What would be the value add here for a company over their existing infrastructure?
LandoCalrissian··on Jeri Ellsworth and the demise of CastAR [audio]
I know CastAR didn't work out, but I'm excited to see what Jeri does next. She is a really inspiring person.
LandoCalrissian··on Browser extension that strips Google Analytics tokens from URL query strings
I'll pour one out for the poor marketing companies.

Are you telling me TrumpCoin isn't legit? I think I need to talk to my accountant.
LandoCalrissian··on Amazon Has Considered Buying Some Toys ‘R’ Us Stores
They kind of did at the very end. They were at least dedicating some space to it, but I think it was too little too late.
LandoCalrissian··on Bitcoin drops below $10K after three days of cryptocurrency correction
What other financial investments do this? If the the stock market crashed tomorrow your not going to see people saying "We'll if you invested in '29 you would have been rich!"
LandoCalrissian··on There are over a billion outdated Android devices in use
Right? It may still largely be functional, but I would never trust that device in the open, it's just ripe for a bevy of attacks.

I really wish Google would expand their service lifetime on their own devices, because I feel 2 years is really too short.

LandoCalrissian··on Amazon gains wholesale pharmacy licenses in multiple states
You realize they do that on purpose right?
LandoCalrissian··on Speech Recognition Is Not Solved
That's the option I was looking at using, so glad to see I'm on the right track. Thanks!
LandoCalrissian··on Speech Recognition Is Not Solved
I recently have been trying out open source solutions for voice recognition for a personal project and you are very correct that it lags very far behind proprietary solutions. Pocketsphinx is still very limited and Kaldi takes quite a bit to setup in a usable fashion. There were a few other options I looked at that I can't think of from the top of my head but were all in similar condition.

As the article says latency is still a problem and it's a huge problem in current open source solutions, some stuff I was testing was easily 5 seconds. I know that can be improved with configuration, but when dealing with libraries of 10 words or so, that's pretty bad.

I feel like anyone who is seriously interested in this space has been scooped up by all the big companies and the open source solutions have really seemed to linger because of it. It's one of the first areas I've seen where open source alternatives are really behind the proprietary solutions. Kind of bummed me out.
