LandR··on Idiomatic Rust
> unconventional programming paradigms

What parts in this article do you think are unconventional?

LandR··on The good times in tech are over
This is why I have 10-12 years outgoings sitting in the bank.

I make way above market rates for my area currently, but I don't have to be worried about getting laid off.

And as my salary went up i made sure my life style didn't.

LandR··on What makes code hard to read: Visual patterns of complexity (2023)
I think the whole Uncle Bob clean code movement has a lot to answer for.
LandR··on What makes code hard to read: Visual patterns of complexity (2023)
> If a method is long to read from top to bottom, the answer isn't always splitting it into 5 smaller ones, sometimes life just has inherent complexity.

Yes! This.

I find it much easier to parse a long function where I can scroll down it and just read it top to bottom, then having a function which calls out to lots of other functions and I'm jumping around the code base, back and forward.

Just reading the long function top to bottom, where I can very easily just scroll up a bit is so much easier to keep in my head.

Even worse is when you go to definition on the method and you get 5 options, and you have to figure out which one would actually get called given the current path through.

LandR··on 40% of Britons haven't read a single book in the last 12 months
Yeah, I dont believe this at all. Unless they are also counting reading books to their child, but I barely believe that either!
LandR··on Gene Hackman has died
Him, his wife and his dog found dead in the house ?

Carbon Monoxide, possibly?

Shame. I had no idea the guy was that old.

LandR··on NASA says 'City killer' asteroid now has 3.1% chance of hitting Earth
There are large error bars right now. The percentages will likely increase and increase as the error bars reduce and the earth takes up a larger and larger space in the potential zone it can pass through.

Up until the earth is outside that zone and the chance drops to zero. So expect the "percentage chance" to keep rising until they have enough to data to rule it out entirely.

LandR··on NASA says 'City killer' asteroid now has 3.1% chance of hitting Earth
City killer.

From what I've read it's estimated at 8MT or so. A large nuke.

LandR··on Garmin's –$40B Pivot
Yeah, plenty times I've got up during the night multiple times, sometimes out of bed entirely wand walking about and the watch hasn't realised this at all.

Similarly I've been in bed, awake, reading, unable to sleep and the watch has thought I was sleeping.

LandR··on Garmin's –$40B Pivot
If I'm watching a film, yes... I know if I've fallen asleep and missed half of it!
LandR··on Garmin's –$40B Pivot
What I mean is, you can be pretty unfit and still have a resting heart rate in the mid 30s when you are asleep. The same unfit person takes a resting heart rate just sitting in a chair doing nothing for a minute or two and it's probably not going to be anywhere near 30.

I've known people who have had resting hearts in the low 40s, but actual resting heart rate when awake is closer to 70!

I think Garmin uses resting heart rate when you are asleep as it makes it seem like you have a really low resting heart rate, where you might not. I think it's overly flattering.

LandR··on Garmin's –$40B Pivot
I always thought resting heart rate while sleeping was a pointless metric ?

YOu can have a resting heart rate while sleeping in the 30s, yet your real resting heart rate in the 60s.

I don't need a watch to tell me if I was sleeping or not, I was there, I know if I was sleeping... I also don't see the point if it telling me if I got enough sleep or not. Again, I know if I didn't get enough sleep as I'm tired...

I also don't think it's sleep tracker is accurate, I've had my garmin tell me I have taken naps when I hadn't. I was just lying on the sofa watching a film and didn't get up for an hour or so. That doesn't mean I'm asleep.

LandR··on VS Code Pets
One jnr dev at a place I worked left his desktop unlocked and a very elaborate email about his love for my little pony and wanting to start a company my little pony fan club was sent from his account to whole company lol.
LandR··on Man trapped inside driverless car as it spins in circles
There's a halting problem joke in here somewhere.
LandR··on Who killed the rave?
Yeah, I'm in the UK and there are still regular late night dance / EDM nights in my city.

I was at one a couple of weekends ago, 11pm - 4am.

A good mix of ages too, people clearly in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s. Everyone having a great time, I would guess at least 70% of the people were on something too, (MDMA, Ecstasy etc).

LandR··on My son (9 yrs old) used plain JavaScript to make a game, and wants your feedback
> directly explaining what's wrong.

My limited experience with the Rust compiler is that its very good at this, at least for a total newbie to Rust.

LandR··on Advent of Code 2024
Developer here. I'm off from 13 Dec to 6 Jan this year.

PRevious years I've managed basically the entire month of December.

I always have holiday days left over at the end of the year to take.

LandR··on Lies we tell ourselves to keep using Golang (2022)
It's easy not simple, but the consequence is that any complexity that other languages handles for you, in go gets forced onto the developer.

There's more stuff to think about, because the language is doing less for you.

LandR··on Microsoft Outlook, Exchange and Teams calendar are down worldwide
> SharePoint Online search is broken too.

How could you tell ?

LandR··on Math4devs.com: List of mathematical symbols with their JavaScript equivalent
Yes, a lot.

I use a plug in for vscode that does all sort of substitutions along with ligature.

E.g.

    (reduce + [1 2 3])
Shows as

    (Σ + 123)
Or

    (comp foo bar quax)
Becomes

    (∘ foo bar quax)
Etc, I find the conciseness so much easier to read.

Unfortunately the plugin can be buggy when you hsbe a lot if subs, I'd setup loads if I could. If only someone would fix it / make a version that works.

LandR··on Rats learned to drive
I don't understand.

Someone, at some point, said lets see if the Orangutan can drive the golf cart, and presumably no one said "NO! That's an awful idea"...

Then not only did it learn, it got good at it and seems to enjoy it...

I just really don't understand how this came about. How did it learn to do this. The initial phases must have been just constant crashing into stuff. How on earth did it ever get past this without a teacher being able to communicate with it.

I have so many questions.

LandR··on Against Best Practices
> It is just that high-velocity low-reliability web and consumer application development is a very large niche

And most of them have no care about the user experience of the end user at all.

Almost every piece of software I have to interact with on a daily basis is absolute garbage. Just full of frustrating bugs that makes most of my day when I'm forced to use a computer absolutely miserable. But to each of the devs it's just a small annoyance in their particular app. Not caring to the end user it's one annoyance that leads to a death by a thousand cuts.

Software is just atrocious nowadays.

LandR··on Ask HN: Ever started your day with 3 tabs and ended with 30?
The number of tabs I have open is directly correlated how much of a struggle I'm having solving my current issue.

If I have 30 tabs open, it's been a very very bad day.

LandR··on Welcome to the Antarctic Fire Department
The opportunities > careers page just links to a picture of a shed.
LandR··on Why should you care about .NET GC? – TooSlowException
> “Ok, that’s nice, but why should I care about it. It’s all automatic, isn’t it?”

This seems depressingly common amongst .NET devs in particular IME.

LandR··on How Apple Watch estimates VO2Max within 1.2 ml/kg/min without a treadmill test
The Garmin Vo2 max estimate is supposed to be pretty accurate too, but mines is wildly off.

It also has race pace estimates for 5k, 10k, half mile etc and those are wildly off too. I think it bases these off Vo2 max, so its unsurprising. It thinks I can do a 42min 10k, that is just never happening.

LandR··on Notepad++ is 21 years old
Looks like this has changed at some point :)

I just tried this, opened a bunch of tabs and edited the text in them all.

Right click tabs, close all to the right, left or close all but this.

Then it shows a message box asking to save, click No To All.

All tabs closed :)

LandR··on Hazel: A live functional programming environment featuring typed holes
This is awesome, but I find that syntax so hard to follow, but that's just me being unfamiliar with it I guess.
LandR··on Rider is now free for non-commercial use
On large solutions I find Rider to be so much faster than VS.

On very large solutions I've found VS to be completely unusable.

LandR··on Rider is now free for non-commercial use
For enterprise .NET that's definitely small.

I've commonly seen enterprise .NET projects that are in the millions of LOC. And one that was over 10 million.
