Lance_ET_Compte··on The Age of Chiplets Is Upon Us
I worked on a small team that created a CPU in the late 1990s and we stacked DDR dies on top of the CPU die and ran vertical traces. It was cool to have the entire computer inside one package.
Lance_ET_Compte··on Programming the C64 with Visual Studio Code
I had a C64 as well. My school had a programming class and we all shared a TRS80 (I think). I remember writing a program to find prime numbers and thinking about various optimizations. Mine was fastest, and I was proud. Then the boy that wrote directly in assembly ran his... That was the moment I decided to get good. :-)
Lance_ET_Compte··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
Electric cars will not "save the environment".

Their purpose is to "save the US automotive industry".

The idea that billionaires and car manufacturers would be motivated by anything else is laughable.

Support public transportation.

Lance_ET_Compte··on No GPS required: our app can now locate underground trains
I have no hearing in any of the frequencies BART trains emit. Burned away...

I do love this "Transit" app though.

Lance_ET_Compte··on No GPS required: our app can now locate underground trains
For the express vs. local, sometimes it will ASK me what train I am on. When there are delays that cause trains to be closer together, it does this. I presume they are crowd-sourcing some data instead of trying to only use an algorithm.

I do love this "Transit" app though.

Their "intent" is to make as much money as possible for their shareholders. Nothing else matters; not today, and not in the future.

That's a really good essay. My mind has been changed! Thank you!
Lance_ET_Compte··on Ambulance hits cyclist, rushes him to hospital, then sticks him with $1,800 bill
I live in SF. I haven't owned a car in many years. I bicycle or take public transit when my destination is too far to walk. I still purchase auto insurance that costs me something like $15/month. It has been years since I've driven, but I do this because I might rent a car on holiday or might drive a friend's car on a roadtrip someday. If I ever needed to get a car again, a period without auto-insurance makes insurance VERY expensive. I did that when living abroad before. I never thought about it covering me as a cyclist or pedestrian. God willing, I'll never need it.
Lance_ET_Compte··on Lichens in cemetaries and a scientist who studies them
The last paragraphs of this article are brilliant...

> “It’s not going to cure cancer, it’s not going to bring world peace, two things that we desperately need right now,” she says.

“But I would argue that there is great value in understanding the world [and] how biodiversity works so that we can preserve it, which is an integral component of human health,” says Pringle.

She adds: “It’s not clear to me that the best way to repair the world isn’t sitting and watching lichens grow in a cemetery and telling the world about it.”

Lance_ET_Compte··on Australia/Lord_Howe is the weirdest timezone
A thousand years ago, every village had their own timekeeping and it worked. Our village is now earth. What if we just abandoned daylight-savings time and timezones and just went with GMT (or anything else) for everywhere on earth?

There would be cultural effects as people in California now start work at 16:00, for example...

Lance_ET_Compte··on Can you get root with only a cigarette lighter?
You'd likely take an exception for a multi-bit error and the handler would likely just retry the read. Single-bit errors are often just corrected on the fly by ECC logic as you mention.

Lance_ET_Compte··on A road safety plan that will lead to cars communicating with each other
This is exactly my feeling. Cars have gotten so huge now, erasing the fuel savings and causing the deaths of so many pedestrians and cyclists.

I would like to see the cost to register these behemoths to be commiserate with the actual cost to society.

Lance_ET_Compte··on What's the fastest language in the world?
It's evolution. If something is better. It will take over.

Thus it's not surprising that all languages have evolved to about the same speed. None is "better". They all convey information at the same rate. That's why there is no pressure to speak just "the best one".

Like you, to my ear, American English seems to be spoken at different rates regionally. I don't know how to think about that...

I tried learning Danish. It's not like French where you don't speak the ends of many words. There, you just say only the most important syllables in the sentence, usually "deh" or "leh" (which are pronounced the same). Respect the Danes! Their language is impenetrable!

Lance_ET_Compte··on M 4.8 – 2024 Whitehouse Station, New Jersey Earthquake
In the Bay Area, everyone gets an SMS message that says an earthquake is coming. I've felt/heard the shaking 10-20 seconds later.

Some industrial equipment shuts down to avoid damage.

Lance_ET_Compte··on Land use policies make urban childcare expensive and rare
"Ample gaps" means walking and cycling FURTHER (often across paved, dangerous, parking lots) to get to your destination. American cities are built for cars, not for people.
Lance_ET_Compte··on Land use policies make urban childcare expensive and rare
Why are you DRIVING your children to school?

If cities were for people instead of cars, you could walk to the neighborhood childcare/school.

I am so happy that I was able to walk with my son to/from his elementary school (and kindergarten) every day! It was consistently the highlight of my day!

Lance_ET_Compte··on Plunging Pickup Truck Sales Threaten Detroit's Profit Engine
These huge vehicles are deadly to pedestrians and cyclists.

They also require more space for parking that simply places things further away and makes our cities less friendly for pedestrians and cyclists.

Oh, and they are melting glaciers and polluting our environment.
