Laarlf··on Cycling is more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
For the price of an ami you can get a lot of used car. Why is that relevant? Because small electric cars suck. They really do. Driving them isn’t pleasant, charging them mostly impossible and they are about as ugly as you can imagine. Not really something I’d spend 4 months of my income on when it is basically just a replacement for a scooter. Which can be had for 50€ and some dedication.

That is correct. You will not convince most people to ditch the car unless you deliberately make it horrible or by completely banning it. It’s like poisoning alcohol during prohibition.you’re putting “public” interest over personal interest at all costs.

Live and let live is a dead concept. Large cities kinda are the reason for that. Before, small towns had small communities with similar interests.

I look at European city centers where cars often times get thrown out now and: they don’t agree. Profits were way down even before COVID. Even if you offer people the option to not use their car, they will avoid it. No form of transportation will ever be as pleasant to use. Cars don’t make cities unpleasant, cities themselves are unpleasant. No matter if cars exist or not. Bikes, pedestrians and cars must be properly separated to make safe cities. Doing that would maybe convince a few people to take a bike.

Or we can go back as you described. Destroy the cities we have built and build small walkable towns. That would mean that you have no say in what your job will be, but your parents do. That’s over 100 year old concept that worked well back then and would probably work well if you built it up again. But with modern demands of “personal freedom” it’s impossible to build.

That seems to be true with Teslas. But at the end of the day it does not matter, since the number that you get with WLTP is useless.

I have looked at the Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq and even there the energy usage seems to be rather off. 15 kWh/100km WLTP vs 19 kWh/100km according to spritmonitor on the Model 3. 11 vs 14 with the Ioniq.

So yeah, it seems like WLTP is not really accurate for EVs either.

Very good question: WLTP has just a number for you.

PHEVs may not be a good idea depending on your driving style. There should be more discussion about what type of engine is the correct one for you before buying. Do you drive enough motorway regularly that a diesel would make sense? Do you drive shorter distances but you cannot charge? Can you charge but you sometimes need more range? Maybe even a PHEV diesel would make sense, but that is a type of vehicle that was rare and is now even rarer.

Technology was improved a lot over the last decades. If you'd record the WLTP tests you could maybe build a system which would accurately calculate your fuel usage for your type of driving and define if a PHEV or a diesel would make any sense for you.

SCR systems are very expensive in modern VWs as well. Especially to repair. With the additional pressure on the engine because of restrictive exhausts engines also don't last as long. EGR systems on diesels are known to gunk up. VW used SCR systems since 2009 if you didn't know.

Remember how i said "unrealistic" and not "lower"? WLTP is a rather unrealistic way to determine fuel consumption or energy usage on cars. If you look at sites which collect fuel usage for cars you often times see fuel usages considerably higher than what WLTP defines. Especially if it's a PHEV since WLTP expects a full battery all the time. Under 2L/100km for a 2 ton SUV is not realistic by any stretch of the imagination. The numbers on https://www.spritmonitor.de/ for example seem to allign more with EPA in my experience.

NEFZ was unrealistic so we better introduce WLTP, which is even more unrealistic. Cool.

Well to be honest the cheating was pretty much only done so the cars wouldn't be unbearably slow. And every other european car manufacturer basically did the same. Once the targets become impossible to reach for everyone, you start cheating.
Laarlf··on After a remote year, tech’s shadow workforce barely hangs on
I have a great solution to that problem: give the people who work money. Crazy, right?

Seriously though: UBI would encourage more working without registration. What you can already see with students where their parents pay their education. Often times they just work on the side "illegally". And a whole lot of other issues that come with UBI. Additional government dependency and so on. Advocates for UBI are like advocates for roundabouts really. If properly planned it could be a non consensual help. But reality does not plan well.

Honestly a lost opportunity. Hydrogen, lean running ICE engines with ethanol, opposed piston engines are all really doable options to offer ICE engines. Which are still important for higher speed travel and places where you can’t charge at night. Especially in Germany the charging problem exists and won’t be fixed for many years. The cars are constantly getting older here. And I can see why.
Laarlf··on It's Never a Bicycle Accident
> Tragedy of the commons.

Ah so you’re saying the lifestyle isn’t superior because it throws self interest out of the discussion.

And yes, it works out quite well for me. My hatred for cyclists who don’t use the bike lanes built literally for them is growing daily and so is my skill to hold the horn for minutes and holding low speeds in first gear. They want coexistence and they get coexistence.

Laarlf··on It's Never a Bicycle Accident
Well why are you still around cars when your lifestyle is so superior? There must be billions of people choosing the "superior" life.

How great that you are so superior yet you want cars to take 2-10 times as much fuel to let them drive at speeds they are not made for while creating more traffic jams. The next time i overtake a cyclist i will keep that in mind and use the first gear and full throttle.

People like you are the reason why "cyclist" becomes an insult. Justifying being annoying is a great way to make you popular i've heard.

Laarlf··on It's Never a Bicycle Accident
If your oh-so-superior lifestyle is so much better, just move to a country where cars don't exist.

Cars and bikes do not belong on the same road without seperation. Mixing different speeds of transportation on the same road is inherently a stupid idea. And if you hold up everyone, don't expect people to like or respect you. Maybe i should start to park in bike lanes. Same issue really.

Laarlf··on It's Never a Bicycle Accident
On the bike lane. There is none? Either well behaved and aware of the circumstances on the road or under the car.
Laarlf··on It's Never a Bicycle Accident
That is the thing that annoys me the most. You don't walk on train tracks, you don't drive on the sidewalk. Excessive speed differences like these are dangerous. Either accept that cycling on the road is dangerous and work with that mindset or choose a fitting medium to travel for the ground given. On a bike, you are weaker and slower than the cars you share the road with. Being hit by a car won't fix infrastructure.

What? The apocalypse? No that won’t come because of Bitcoin miners. Why would it?

endless banning is the downfall of the west. I pray for the apocalypse to come sooner.
Laarlf··on Replaying real life: how the Waymo Driver avoids fatal human crashes
Regular corners. Road width isn’t even that important really. Smaller roads makes some people drive very inconsistent with their speed, which annoys people and encourages overtaking at possibly risky spots.
Laarlf··on Replaying real life: how the Waymo Driver avoids fatal human crashes
Europe has built roads forever that makes driving engaging. Europe has a lot less issues with phones while driving etc.

Germany also solves that problem by having no speed limit when it gets boring. Making driving engaging is the best way to create mindful drivers.

Laarlf··on Replaying real life: how the Waymo Driver avoids fatal human crashes
Undersized roundabouts with 1 lane are not fitting for certain places. As said, I have seen many traffic lights being replaced with roundabouts. If you go to the Netherlands you see how roundabouts are executed well. Also Denmark has well made roundabouts.

Just putting a small roundabout somewhere without putting thought into it is making things considerably worse.

Laarlf··on Replaying real life: how the Waymo Driver avoids fatal human crashes
Not leaving your house would solve a lot of things. Why don’t people do that? Anyway, slowing down traffic is not the answer. Driving should either be more automated or more engaging so drivers stop using their phones. 2 hours of driving 20 mph in a straight line will be boring enough to create more accidents.
Laarlf··on Replaying real life: how the Waymo Driver avoids fatal human crashes
I live in Germany. We have some roundabouts. And let me tell you: they rarely work better than red lights. Traffic flow requires more than roundabouts. They require proper planning, green waves, proper sizing and still different lanes for roundabouts. Don’t forget about semis either. Just throwing roundabouts somewhere won’t solve anything. I’ve seen that often enough. That will just create more traffic jams.

First they came for the fascists. Then they came for the conservatives. Which made fascists recruit conservatives. Then they came for free speech advocates. Which made fascists recruit them. Then they came for capitalists. Which made the fascists recruit them.

Don’t you worry, the fight isn’t over. The more you ban, the larger the counter groups get and the more radicalized they get. You see it today already. Book burners were never on the correct side of history.

Laarlf··on Grindr to be fined almost €10M over GDPR complaint
Do you see Google, Microsoft and Apple? It’s nearly been 3 years and they don’t really seem to care. Pretty sure the EU is too scared to touch them.
Laarlf··on Grindr to be fined almost €10M over GDPR complaint
Yeah, same thoughts. The gdpr didn’t change much but made small companies like these more vulnerable and web browsing more unbearable. Data is still getting collected and big companies don’t care.
Laarlf··on Electric vehicles close to ‘tipping point’ of mass adoption
Takes literally 3 minutes on my car at -10C. If you have issues with cold climates maybe buy a car built in and for cold climates. Like Swedish cars.
