LPisGood··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
Nvidia can start putting weights in silicon if model development slows down.
LPisGood··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
Intent is very important for many practical purposes.
LPisGood··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
It’s worth considering AES is the result of many decades of development of prior block cipher algorithms. It is no so hard to make a variant of AES that looks similar but is not secure.
LPisGood··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
Yes, it was. An attack only needs to work one way, but an encryption standard must resist all attacks.

There are many examples of would be crypto algorithms that died on the vine because an attack was found. It is often recommended for beginners to study breaking cryptographic algorithms long before they attempt to create them.

Yes it is; that’s what I was thinking when I started to comment but somehow I ended up reversing course. Comment is appropriately edited now.

I see what you’re saying. It is generally harder to build a crypto system than to break one so I would find it hard to see potential from the design end before progress on the attack end.

Private key cryptography is essentially unbroken by these models.
LPisGood··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
VC firms batting at such a small rate.
LPisGood··on Can gzip be a language model?
There are some deep connections between machine learning, compression, and cryptography with information theory as a common thread.

Also, I’ve never seen “ass.” Used to shorten “aside” — I typically use N.B. but perhaps only for important ones.

LPisGood··on Divide by depth for instant 3D
Is that why quaternions are interesting for computer graphics? I studied mathematics and computer science but never understood (or even looked so hard into) the connection.
LPisGood··on Grok 4.7
I don’t think system prompts are particularly reliable way to do much at all. It’s better to put it as a hook after each response, or a skill at least so you can trigger it at will if you don’t want it everytime.
LPisGood··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
That’s not true in general. Plenty of jurisdictions do not allow you to use contradictory arguments in hopes that one is persuasive.
LPisGood··on The engineering behind the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve
One fun fact I’ve heard is that the strategic oil reserve requires like 100-150 million barrels of oil to maintain operational pressure and even be functional. This means we can’t draw it down to zero; not even close.
LPisGood··on Global bond yields hit 2008 highs, raising stakes for big borrowers
The US’s most important export for many years was treasury bonds. As de-dollarization occurs, the United States is bound to face some economic reckoning.

It should be noted that even still almost all US debt is held locally.

LPisGood··on Global bond yields hit 2008 highs, raising stakes for big borrowers
One aspect of that balanced budget that should be noted is that it does rely on a sizable funding increase from the state government.

Now, that state is legally required to have a balanced budget itself, so perhaps this is a small side note rather than a major change in perspective. I just think it’s not spoken about enough when discussing how that budget process went.

“Promise endlessly” is an oft touted criticism of social safety net programs, when the reality is that reducing vast tranches of corporate welfare is typically more than enough to solve budget shortfalls.
LPisGood··on Oil Executives Say the Great Fuel Crisis Is Here
Is it not clear that American election issues are directly related to those things?
LPisGood··on A single firm is behind OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta hacking scandals
One wonders if the publicity associated with the events in question were part of the sales pitch.
LPisGood··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Right, which is why it is a charitable comparison of the lawsuit, showing how it may be successful.
LPisGood··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
It should be noted that suing gun manufacturers for murder has been done successfully. A more charitable comparison might be suing a torrent aggregator instead of the end users doing the distribution.
LPisGood··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
My understanding of the case law on this subject is that courts are extremely wary of letting terms of service violations rise to the level of federal crime. It essentially endows anyone with a domain name into an authority which can create federal law on demand.
LPisGood··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
This does not mean that any launch which ignites people’s bullshit detectors is successful.
LPisGood··on Claude is a Contrarian
The smarter thing to do would be to steelman the original position and not assume that the weakest of counterarguments — stated confidently and without much further analysis — sufficiently refute it.
LPisGood··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
Presumably the characteristic being referred to is superficial politeness mixed with racism or xenophobia.
LPisGood··on OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra on ARC-AGI-3
I think raw brain energy is not a fair comparison. Humans are not willing and able to serve requests at identical competence all hours of the day. You have to invest considerable resources to get a person to even do so for part of the day.
LPisGood··on Agent memory as a file format
Attention is all you need.

Seriously, isn’t this the core premise of RAG / modern embedding search systems?

LPisGood··on Good Culture Is the Biggest Productivity Hack, Not AI
How do you effectively steelman against your own position without a dynamic “adversary” responding to counter-claims? I feel like every static argument except the most absolutely resolute is vulnerable.
LPisGood··on “It works better in the app”
I pretty much exclusively drink black coffee or plain espresso and I’ve yet to encounter any issues getting it.

I have seen lots of complaints and memes to this effect, but never has it been my lived experience. I’ve also never had an issue with politely saying “excuse me, I actually ordered X and I got Y by mistake.” No nervous breakdown at all

LPisGood··on “It works better in the app”
Yes! Airport gate workers can (and have, for me) frequently pull all kinds of strings and make all kinds of adjustments if you just ask (kindly).
