Hello. I make music, make and think about games, write about systems, and yell at computers. Patreon is for the exciting remnants of all that:

What does this have to do with my question?

There always seems to be an incompatibility between the people who made it, the people who use it, and the people who want to contribute. The latter two often try, but the former isn't interested in the help or has a very specific vision for the project and doesn't allow any input that isn't in line with that even if it's not in conflict.

It's hard to fault anyone in that triad 100%. Open source has a way of becoming infrastructure. People come to depend on tools made by people without the resources, interest, or personality to run an infrastructure project, or who won't budge on their vision to allow contributions outside of it that might help get the project to a point where it can attract enough vision-aligned contributors.

Forking potentially shifts the problem to a new triad, so it's not an obvious solution in all cases.

Kye··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux

Kye··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
The classic NAND-me-down. My first personal computer was a "broken" 486 system I got for $25 at a yard sale. All it needed was a hard drive.
Kye··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
It could have been bought old and upgraded. Not everyone had the luxury of a brand new first computer.
Kye··on Television is 100 years old today
Blogger was new when TV was 75 years old. Glad to see it's still around.
Kye··on Tell HN: Bending Spoons laid off almost everybody at Vimeo yesterday
What is it? The page is vague to the point of uselessness.

Threads pages don't load for me. Is there a non-Threads option for this?
Kye··on Our approach to advertising
Do they? I haven't seen any research. My non-scientific experience watching people use Google tells me they mostly cycle through the ads at the top until they get to the right thing, or forget what they were doing and follow the first advertiser's funnel.
Kye··on Our approach to advertising
Occasionally I have to help someone find something through Google. The hardest part is getting them to not impulsively click the first link, which is invariably an ad instead of the right thing. The second hardest is helping then navigate back to the search results. The third, of course, is stopping them from clicking the second link. Also an ad for the wrong thing.

I stopped trying to help people with computer stuff unless I can take over and trust them to not blame me when some random, unrelated thing breaks down the line.

I don't do tabletop, but I do write, and making these is helpful for worldbuilding.

Kye··on How have prices changed in a year? NPR checked 114 items at Walmart
"Pack contains 6 Mega Rolls (224 Sheets Per Roll) of Charmin Ultra Soft Toilet Paper"

to

"MEGA ROLLS, MEGA VALUE: Pack contains 6 Mega Rolls (208 Sheets Per Roll) of Charmin Ultra Soft Toilet Paper"

Everyone saw that coming when they changed roll sizes and reframed it, right?

Kye··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
I don't see any confusion. Ozone is a mixing and mastering tool with buttons to find the best settings using ML, from the company Izotope. People who use it use something that the company calls AI. Where does the band come in to this?
Kye··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
A representative portion of the anti-AI crowd is against any use, even personal.

I'm keeping an eye on Graphite (https://graphite.art/) as something to move to from Affinity's stuff, but it's good there's a new option for people who need more.
Kye··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
I don't buy a lot of hardware, but the last thing I bought (Vocaster One) came with the driver installer on a small USB mass storage volume when the device plugged in.
Kye··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
I didn't say it was. This discussion is about relative difficulty of setting things up. It is, objectively, more difficult when you need to download a driver for new hardware and the NIC on your laptop needs a driver your distro didn't come with.
Kye··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
Most explorer issues are really file system issues. It's touchy. chkdsk in offline repair mode usually fixes it. For the rest, clear the thumbnail cache.

The ways Windows breaks are different from the ways Linux breaks, but there are still ways to fix it. Most of the rest are solved with one or two commands, and it's usually the same two: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/use-the-system-fil...

Kye··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
The difference was the device came with a disk containing the driver for DOS and Windows.
Kye··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
I'm waiting on Ableton, Arturia, and Native Instruments. The latter two should have the easiest time since all their stuff is already VST3 and it can support Linux.
Kye··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
Some of the stuff coming out of CES is nice. Whether the apparent quality survives in production is another question.
Kye··on How Markdown took over the world
I can never remember what's what with Markdown. HTML has the important feature of providing a hint to function in the tag. I struggled learning HTML, but I eventually memorized all the tags to the point that I can still hammer out boilerplate all these years later. It's always a coin toss on whether I'll bold or italicize the first time I use Markdown in a while.

I still prefer WYSIWYG.

Kye··on Linux is good now
I'm familiar with the standard suite of proposed solutions, but maybe this will help someone who can use it. Thanks for sharing.
Kye··on Linux is good now
Hopefully all this news Linux is getting for games translates to pressure on makers of all the tools that don't run reliably/at all in Wine and co. to start working on ports. Or at least on making changes to make API translation work better.

I can't move until the software I've invested in moves too. There are no Linux alternatives.
