Krei-se··on The Slow Formation of Durable Software
Oh i had no idea, thanks so much and i wish great success on your arts!
Krei-se··on The Slow Formation of Durable Software
The reason great artists spend so much time developing their skills is that the result no one knew they wanted comes from skill and the new possibilities emerging from that.

So as a software developer now might be the best time to throw system design on it's head and develop without a direction but make sure everything is as good as one can forge it.

Surprising functionality and stuff not found elsewhere then more or less simply emerges from that.

Granted - that has a certain freedom and no pressure to make money as a prerequisite but so do the 5 years noted here.

Krei-se··on Classic PC demoscene productions running natively in the browser
You just don't understand, it's the prompt and knowing which foreign work to endless rehash that's the new creativity now. There's taste in knowing what artist to steal from!

/s if that wasn't obv.

Krei-se··on Reasons to Dislike AI Coding
1. No because a compiler solves a problem introduced by multiple architectures, it's NOT automatically a higher language. Also its deterministic. If you run the same version compiler, same flags, the result will always be the same and is guaranteed to do (maybe optimized) what you told it to do.

2. Good for you and i wont criticize this take. My life is A LOT about sitting in front of a computer writing useful and/or fun code though and i love it!

No - because as a software developer adapting IS the job.
Krei-se··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
Aside the fact the author sells ai services, training, whatever i can not understand the view how knowledge workers will be replaced while every employee is now forced and expected to work 10-fold and hiring is halted because shortsighted deciders and ... money.

The effect on the market is pure GREED and wishful thinking as none of the people in charge of HR or decision making have any idea how this technology actually works.

Also - why is everyone comparing this to the industrial revolution? And not f.e. invention of vaccines. No it HAS to be the big big story or you cannot make money with it.

All while the actual results are well, great. Helpful, sure. But so are vaccines!

Don't buy into this bs, any service or course. d2l.ai is free and wont be stupidly useless next month like whatever hype we sell this week.

As the doom stories lose novelty now we get the feel good "my grandpa" stories.

If you can solve the problem without an AI - do that.

I'll be back next year reminding you about your cybersecurity claims.

100% the smoking gun. It's not the thought that counts, it's the typing you save. You don`t need to read the text, it's not enough. You need to digest the slop.

Krei-se··on I said no and Apple said yes
I wonder if all the work to do Linux and self hosting is actually shorter than having to deal with these unasked for annoyances.

Open: 0 to comfort that always grows. When it works you usually don't touch it for years.

Closed: Comfort to never-quite-what-you-want-but-compromise. Works, but you never know what's going on. Features might just get added whenever to your detriment.

So in one case i have a known state i can reach and hold. The time i put in is known and the point in time is up to me. In the other case i can never be sure about state, time and point in time. That's a clear loser to me.

"Last week I succumbed to Apple’s harassment" - usually what all end-users do eventually when caught in the walled garden ...

Krei-se··on Attention is all you have
My antidote to this was 100% selfhosting from home as you are now on par with the platforms and have a choice to serve yourself.

You cannot stay focused all day and theres nothing wrong with "just show me random dumb stuff" i mean i wont lie, im old and RTL2 was a thing you know even in educated circles. These no tv people read bad fiction instead.

And i actually kinda like the youtube algo to wind down - but i can also just switch to a timeshift archive.

I think the problem is more that these platforms are reeeally comfortable to use and its not that easy to have the same - doable though.

Oh and btw if you wanna go back to blog circles and xmpp and vpn lan games im all in but times are changing.

Krei-se··on In September, AI generated code has made up 17.25% of all Linux Kernel patches
I code because the software i need is not there yet and these tools still fail at doing those.

Not sure why the next xy (already done) app has any economic value outside being a cheaper clone.

Still there is nothing wrong with having an AI point out problems which i assume is the case here and someone still is responsible and knowledgeable about the patched (!) code.

Krei-se··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
I think they are lying to themselves. The patterns change with the hardware and environment, i sure code different and use other data structures when having to account for VRAM now, network security, etc.

Going from the specification to the code is not a one way street. You adapt the whole chain. Saying the only thing that matters is the spec is squinting your eyes and hoping for the best.

You stop learning how things actually end up in memory, compute, storage and network this way. Not sure how you can build a secure and fast spec then.

And even if you do know i never understand why not typing it out. You can use a lib if you don't want to worry about these details or know you are not skilled enough (tls f.e. ...). But having AI do it introduces uncertainty where there can be determinism.

I think it's just laziness and people not liking the pain of learning or needing to show off whatever first. Who knows. Still don't see a reason to use these tools outside of learning or whatever i used a google search for before.

Krei-se··on Programming is Art
Lovely to read, but AI will surely remove a lot of software engineering with little creativity.

Programming for money means managing a codebase and that's more akin to biology. You add inhibitors, promoters, etc. depending on the current requirements of the environment.

When excel is good enough to do that, people will use excel and not pay you to manage a monolith or even allow R/D to start from a blank slate with a new take.

What you create on a blank slate with your ideas might be art, but it's usually not evolving, you keep the picture, album etc. frozen in that state.

I agree there are usecases, but image classification is not the hype. Still - that's great, can we get a link? Or let me guess it's internal, you don't want to doxx yourself?

Knowing medical software requirements, which might be there for a reason, i highly doubt this will see production.

Krei-se··on The turbulent AI era is here
where? All i see is getting bugged with slop and for learning i returned to textbooks. Even code i get from it is stuff i would earlier copy paste from SO.

After 2 years i feel mostly distracted by it. There are usecases ofc but encountering a chatbot or AI written posts, software, etc. is still a negative.

Krei-se··on My Friend Aaron
Don't listen to the quitters here kids, go chase your dream, it's worth it. Employment is just helping someone else reach theirs for a pat on the back.

You can do it, be resilient and stubborn, go against the grain and things start to work out.

as always: no code, no link, not even a description.

I work on my project for 2 years now and using an LLM always came back to bite me. Learning how something works is needed, slow and painful - but pain is gain.

If this works for you - awesome. Until it doesn't.

As always there is 0 code or link. All talk.

Krei-se··on AI Isn't Outthinking Mathematicians. It's Out-Remembering Them
I was more after the fact i can trust the compiler to give me the same result - even though via an optimized path.

Certainly scopes vary, but in my line of work i define memory layout and how this data will be processed myself - thus it's great a compiler might do that, but the result of the computation will not change.

Now in comparison giving an LLM specs ... i a) cannot be sure what the computation will be b) it might be something else on another run.
