Kosirich··on 15 of 23 Monkeys with Elon Musk’s Neuralink Brain Chips Reportedly Died
Instead of bashing and defending Elon Musk, I would appreciate an answer from a medical researcher or someone with equivalent knowledge on how do the findings relate to other medical studies where monkeys are used, in terms of numbers used, way monkeys were treated as well as research outcome value compared to similar studies done elsewhere. (thanks)
Kosirich··on 10 Years of Nukemap
I would say that exceptions are/were excellent Fallout games, especially the original and the sequel (the best in the series).

Kosirich··on JRE Missing (Rogan episodes removed by Spotify)
Related to this topic. I wonder how many of you agree that this cancellation business is just an extension of puritan/protestant ideology masked as social progressivism.
Kosirich··on JRE Missing (Rogan episodes removed by Spotify)
This is beyond messed up that he has to apologize. In a way for me the message is : "no matter how decent of a person you are, how appropriate the context is, no matter what the target and the subject of conversation was, one wrong word and you will end up having to beg for the apology"

In that way, I respect Ricky Gervais way more and his policy of not apologizing for a joke just because someone got offended. Unless you said it in a totally wrong context and time, then it's the other's person job to figure out context, subject and the target of the joke.

Kosirich··on A “Sideways” supply response in California winegrapes
Reminds me of a story from few (5 maybe) years ago when The Economist reported that USA milk producers had to throw X amount (X being in tons) of milk due to a sudden shift of preference to another yogurt type, driven by social networks.
Kosirich··on Plans you're not supposed to talk about
So I'm guessing you don't see a connection between your comment and point 5 of the author, nor the closing paragraph at the end?
Kosirich··on Busy Simulator: Feign importance with repeating app sounds
My dad likes to do "Can I call you?" which I might see later, after which he won't respond which for me essentially means I will go through "worst case scenarios" in my head over and over..
Kosirich··on Plans you're not supposed to talk about
Some people have pointed out that this article makes case for "traditionally" conservative issues and I agree. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm greatly influenced by Taleb way of summarizing knowledge in his books and how he deals with this issues, so I'll give it my take: - if something existed through out cultures, it was probably tested and it exists for a reason(1,3,4) - word used today in English might not have completely (etymological) different meaning (3) - question of progress is not a yes/no question but "at what speed" (4,6) - high value signals have "value" if there is skin in the game(1) - you don't experiment on complex systems(2) - the idiot-yet-intellectual (5) - it's the outcome that matters (6)
Kosirich··on If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Rich?
Taleb points to this by reversing the question to :"If you are so RICH, why aren't you SMART"

He get's to some of the points in: https://medium.com/incerto/inequality-and-skin-in-the-game-d...

And specifically IQ vs wealth:

Kosirich··on Macron says France will build new nuclear energy reactors
Good points. Denmark has a lot HVAC district heating with storage for load balancing planned in it's energy strategy 2050 (as I remember when I read it few years back).

Example of a proof of concept for electricity to heat and reverse via rock heating is the Siemens Gamesas Hamburg plant: https://www.siemensgamesa.com/explore/innovations/energy-sto...

Additionally, I would add that there electricity for generation of hydrogen or synth fuels for airline or seafaring industries:

Kosirich··on Why is Tcl syntax so weird (2013)
I totally got turned around on TCL. I hated it when I started as I was mostly programming in c#, but now after year of sporadic use I absolutely love it for it's simplicity when manipulating text files and strings.
Kosirich··on NFT misconception: JPEG aren't stored on the Blockchain
I haven't studied NFTs but I will admit I had an misconceptions that the low pixel art NFTs purpose was that it was able to be stored on the chain itself as "it's own thing" or as a representation of a "bigger piece".

My question would then be.... why the lowres pixelated NFTs if they are being hosted somewhere else?

Kosirich··on The tomato was feared in Europe for more than 200 years (2013)
just to point out, this wasn't a dig at veggies. My dads grandma still used tomatoes and ate them, but probably the "food for pigs" was still a "strong meme" at the end of 19th century in central Istria. The part of Istria, todays Croatia, I'm taking about was then owned by Austrian dukes and not Italy like coastline, which might explain later adoption of "New World" based cousine.
Kosirich··on The tomato was feared in Europe for more than 200 years (2013)
My dads grandma would still refer to tomato as "food for pigs".
Kosirich··on Don’t be spooky
Amen. My manager scheduling an afternoon meeting with title "Very important information to share" without no info and sending it early in the morning, means I will barely work and will spend the day wondering what it is. 50% is due to my anxiety, 50% due to curiosity.
Kosirich··on Combating disinformation with humility
It's simple actually... normalize, praise, celebrate and reward uttering the sentence (admitting) "I was wrong" or "I made a mistake".

Do it on a daily basis, do it with your family, friends, colleagues, but mostly do it yourself.

Kosirich··on Show HN: I built a CNC-machine from scratch, using 40x 3D-printed parts
As someone working in CNC area (CAM posts and automation) you explained this very well. Especially I like that you mentioned the tendency to use just a tip of the tool, which I know even machinists tend to do. Perhaps also mention the ware if certain position on the table is used constantly?

I would add that when you go close or bellow 0.01 then also perfectly controlling your holders (runout) and being wary that the tool, no matter how stiff, bends as well, so you should control your overhangs as well.

Kosirich··on Show HN: Mostly inaccurate but dead honest 33 years of one man's life
For me DOTA2 flame war experience has gotten much better over the years and is 10 times better than how it was in DOTA1. Perhaps it is the ease of setting up or it's the younger generation who is more chill or it's perhaps Valves banning system... I don't know to be honest. Occasionally DOTA2 still can be used as Russian language (involuntary) learning platform on EU servers. In general, long gone are the days where 10 minutes into the game I would get a comment from a player describing what he is doing or is going to do with/to my mother.
Kosirich··on Show HN: Mostly inaccurate but dead honest 33 years of one man's life
Oh...man...DOTA w3 and DOTA2. When ever I hear people talking about "having to deal with toxic community of X game" my mind immediately thinks "you probably haven't played DOTA".
Kosirich··on Ask HN: How do you tackle your own negativity?
I can only talk about my own way of handling it.

I became a more neutral person over years...I accept things as they are and don't complain about things were complaining won't have an impact (yes, stoicism played a role here).

I will be honest and say that I live in a well functioning country with a good job and a decent salary... that being said, so do some of my friends but they like to be negative and do negative spins on things.

There is an overall shift in people to be negative and to search for gotch ya moments. I accept it but I refuse to take a part of it, which means active self reflection as it is very easy to "go there".

Probably unpopular option, inspired by NNT, is to straight go to the "go f... yourself" when someone obviously is taking the most negative aspect of an opinion and is try to hook you for his own "gotchya moment". This cuts through the charade and illusion of respect when in fact the other person is not giving any.

Kosirich··on Ask HN: Is VR/AR just a fad?
Nope. I see people who are not that much into gaming and stuff getting Oculuses after trying it at friends. They agree that once you trying playing a FPS in VR you don't want to go back to the PC/console.

I see it as console substitute as I mean... it's 400 euros... that is nothing for the amount of fun you get from the device. In my case I use it few times per week for an hour or two. It's also great as when I play a FPS game I also move a lot. (I do hope that Valve or someone else will release an equally compelling product).

Kosirich··on Epistemic Minor Leagues
Respectfully disagree with the article.

There is a not a "minor league" version of competing for Nobel in Physics or Chemistry but it also doesn't have to exist as it is not what those people are after. From my POV and experience, what broke down are communities and role of discussion and gossip in those same communities. The popular "Have you heard X about Y" use to apply to a local teacher, major, bar owner ect. and more connection people would find between the X and prominent the figure would be in the community, the more engaged the conversation would have been. A conversation would go like this Today it's about pop stars, politicians, scientist aka people you (them) will never meet in RL.

I imagine this would be a typical example of conversations that are missing:

Person A: "Have you heard about our major, he is sleeping with the shop owners daughter?" Person B: "Oh no, really? Doesn't she have a child with the son of the barber?" Person A: "You mean the barber on the main square?" Person B: "Yes, that one he use to have more shops but they failed, because barber no.2 screwed him over" Person A: " That is not what I heard... the story I heard is that barber no1. didn't do his fair share" Person B: " Come on... that can't justify that..." ECT ECT ECT

Kosirich··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to exploring the internet?
If you want to "recreate wonder of exploration" I recommend getting VR set (Oculus) and installing RecRoom or something similar. At least I get the sensation of "earlier internet"
Kosirich··on This word does not exist
"Monike" - (of an idea, idea, or person) not actually existing; unrealist

This was the 5th word it generated

Kosirich··on Getting the best out of OpenSCAD
Awesome! Thanks.. I've been working with implicit modeling for the past half a year but I didn't know there was an "OpenSCAD" equivalent. Seems to work rather well(?)
Kosirich··on ‘Give away your Legos’ and other commandments for scaling startups
The word LEGO wouldn't exist if not for the company. The wikipedia article actually doesn't say the full story about how the name came to be aka "leg godt (play well)" => LEGO came from a "naming competition" that the founder made and which he ended up winning. The company would like that the word "Legos" isn't used as it implies that "Legos" are plastic interconnecting bricks of any manufacturer, including the ones that just blatantly copy even the newest LEGO sets.
