KorematsuFredt··on The absurd complexity of server-side rendering
I had a website which I was rendering statically using Jekyll. Overtime I had millions of pages, rendering was getting too time consuming and was taking up far too much of space.

I then moved on to PHP. Worked like a charm with $15/mo server on Google cloud. Excellent search performance as well.

KorematsuFredt··on Study finds most unemployed young men have criminal records
That would not work. I do not want my teenage daughter to do part time work in a business that employs a sex offender. I do not want to work with an insurance agent who engaged in a financial fraud few years ago.
KorematsuFredt··on On iPhone sideloading: it’s ok, I’m changing my mind
I will not be surprised if lobbying around this issue is actually supported by malware, spyware folks.
KorematsuFredt··on Long-term visa for remote workers
Why such sort of visas do not get popular beyond very hipster cases.

1. You are offering entry but not equal treatment (in terms of economic freedom). 2. In Europe citizens have taxpayer paid healthcare but as a visitor you are screwed, I mean private insurance exists but it is hard to have a good restaurant in town if another government funded restaurant is distributing food for free.

If you can say we will give you 100% exemption from tax then it is a different story.

KorematsuFredt··on Former Harvard chemistry chair to stand trial for allegedly hiding ties to China
Read this : https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-06-13/the-u-s-i...

> The NIH and the FBI are targeting ethnic Chinese scientists, including U.S. citizens, searching for a cancer cure. Here’s the first account of what happened to Xifeng Wu.

> Her resignation, and the departures in recent months of three other top Chinese American scientists from Houston-based MD Anderson, stem from a Trump administration drive to counter Chinese influence at U.S. research institutions. The aim is to stanch China’s well-documented and costly theft of U.S. innovation and know-how. The collateral effect, however, is to stymie basic science, the foundational research that underlies new medical treatments. Everything is commodified in the economic cold war with China, including the struggle to find a cure for cancer.

> Ways of working that have long been encouraged by the NIH and many research institutions, particularly MD Anderson, are now quasi-criminalized, with FBI agents reading private emails, stopping Chinese scientists at airports, and visiting people’s homes to ask about their loyalty.

Like in above case where the person is being entangled into an IRS tax evasion case, these people are being ethnically targeted, questions, harassed, their constitutional rights being trampled upon.

KorematsuFredt··on Former Harvard chemistry chair to stand trial for allegedly hiding ties to China
A friend of friend, a doctor of Chinese origin was caught under Trump administration for stealing "critical IP" and giving it to Chinese scientists. I do not know all the details but later it was revealed that the Doctor who was treating child cancer patients in USA shared the best practices and treatment plans that seems to have worked better than others to his doctor contacts in China.
KorematsuFredt··on FBI may shut down police use-of-force database due to lack of police involvement
My fav. Milton Friedman often use to say that "Democracy is not about winning 51% of votes, it is about finding 5% of people who say they will vote for you if you take up their pet issue and they do not care how you vote on other issues. Then you selected another 5% of people with some other pet issue and so on. Together it should come to 51%".

What you are describing however is the opposite of this. People do not care how horrible a policy being proposed is, if it does not impact them or their loved ones. The conservatives who are flying "thin blue line" are the same people who are claiming that Jan 6 capitol riots were actually orchestrated by FBI and other branches of law enforcements. Conservative love for cops is not based on principles but it is more of a trick to "own the libs". Sooner or later the cops are going to come for the conservatives, for example Biden sending FBI after parents of schoolchildren will eventually be a template for states and cities to target conservatives of different stripes and you will quickly see those "thin blue line" flags going down.

Note how people who smoke marijuana are "addicts" and "junkies" who should be thrown in a pit as per many conservatives even though most of these "junkies" are productive members of society. But when it comes to opioid crisis they claim it is a "health crisis" for which "big pharma" must be held accountable. No one calls the addicts "junkies" or insists they should be sent to jail even though some of them are addicted to a point where they simply can not function normally.

KorematsuFredt··on Over 200 newspapers now involved in lawsuits vs. Google, Facebook
> tragedy of the commons that only the government can solve

Tragedy of commons are not always solvable by governments, in this case most certainly not as people in government have their incentives aligned with getting favorable publicity from media.

Government can be a more effective regulatory mechanism for say polluted air or river because cleaner air benefits everyone equally. Media is not the case. Media benefits to those who can control it and putting government in charge will give us another CNN and FOX News.

Yes. Online adverts did not break journalism. The news media houses did this to themselves and frankly I think they are getting what they deserve.

I don't blame Amazon here. This is suspicios. All debit cards are linked to your bank account which always have a statement.

Also, I have found it very helpful to provide not just statement but the photos of the card, your ID and various other documentation in the PDF. It helps the support engineer realize that you are really you.

KorematsuFredt··on India's salesmen face ruin as Ambani targets mom-and-pop stores
> things we don't need.

Very simple. Don't buy if you don't need. No one has forced you to buy stuff you don't need but in general these store offer much wider variety of products at very good rates, are better regulated and have better works ethics.

KorematsuFredt··on Indian academics throw weight behind Sci-Hub and LibGen in landmark case
Most of these academics are phonies and are running citation rings. Many of them are the editors and reviewers and so on. So it is in their interest to publish the research in these phony journals.
KorematsuFredt··on India's salesmen face ruin as Ambani targets mom-and-pop stores
This is a terrible headline. This sort of nonsense is promoted in India for last many decades. Pizza hut was not allowed in India using similar grounds. Big Bazar, D Mart and many others have succeeded well in the country without ruining smaller stores. And even if they get ruined it is not much of problem as these smaller stores are often dishonest, exploit their own labour and poor illiterate customers, employ child labor and so on.
KorematsuFredt··on California moves to recommend delaying algebra to 9th grade statewide
> kids who have parents who can afford tutors and such can push the kids through the prescribed steps sooner. Kids whose parents each have two jobs to get food on the table, well, they simply can’t. So the former define “higher standards” because they chose their parents well?

Yes. Kids born in rich families will do better, kids born to better parents will do better and that is a good thing. A lot of scientific research in early years did not come from government funded labs but rich people working on their passions. Note that privileged people will define "higher standards" always no matter what laws you pass and how you twist the public education system. But these sort of social justice solutions damage the very poor people who cant afford kumon.

KorematsuFredt··on California moves to recommend delaying algebra to 9th grade statewide
The mass universal education system was designed to control and brainwash masses. The massive "free and universal" education movement launched by US was meant for this sort of end games and I am not surprised at all.

Having said that as a priviledged parent I merely chuckle at this social justice wanking as my kid goes to a private school and is tutored by me. She will be more successful than the "equity" kids from California if eveyrthing else remains the same.

KorematsuFredt··on Dollar Tree says US$1.25 price point to become new standard
"In the US, half of shoppers buy groceries from a dollar store."

I do not think it means half of Americans buy groceries from dollar general. I do not think it means of all those who shop groceries, half of them buy it from dollar general. I think it means, half of the people who buy stuff at dollar store also buy some groceries there. It does not mean much when put it that way.

I am familiar with poor people's shopping habits. The biggest advantage that Dollar stores have over others is not the price but rather their convenient location. A lot of Indians/Chinese students who come on shoestring budget would often buy lot of junk food from dollar store because they did not own car. For other items such as rice etc. they would request me to buy a large bag for them and then divide it among themselves. Similarly, trip to walmart etc. were rationed mostly because they did not own cars. People who owned cars on other hand could stretch their budgets even more. It was not uncommon for 5 of the folks to share one car, share a costco membership and buy in bulk and save lot of money in the process.

KorematsuFredt··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
This is entirely gray area. The rules of thumb are following:

- Owning companies is totally fine. - Generating income from various sources is totally fine.

What is not allowed is: - You should not work in any capacity where an American citizen could have been gainfully employed. Lot of people mis-represent is that you can not get paid a salary, that is not true. Salary is just an evidence of you worked.

How many people structure this is the following. Partner with an American citizen and start the business. The American partner will hold 51% stake and you will be a passive investor with 49%. If you are married you can apply for H4EAD. You spouse has unconditional EAD and she can run the company.

Important note: This issue is only for people born in India. Everyone else can get their EAD/GC in an year or so.

Colonizing mars would be pretty much like Colonization of USA minus the genocide of natives.

The poorest and hated folks would be the first to go to mars, (think of illegal immigrants in USA, both democrats and republicans might agree to give citizenship of their relatives if they volunteer to go to Mars) these people would eventually build their own civilization would be envy of earth.

KorematsuFredt··on Turning stem cells into human eggs
300 adults have to take care of may be 600, those 600 can then take care of 1200 and so on. Thought this forum was for folks with basic intelligence.
KorematsuFredt··on Turning stem cells into human eggs
Yes. That would be the day. I would love to have many children but I hate the notion of pregnancy. Once we can also grow them in labs I think it would be really great day for humanity. You could ship only embroyos to Mars and then let them grow into babies. (You will still need people to take care of them but we can ship only few hundred people with few million embroyos to colonize a distant planet.

KorematsuFredt··on Hardened wood as a renewable alternative to steel and plastic
Why are people not considering just growing large trees to capture carbon cut down those trees and just coat them in plastic and throw them at the bottom of ocean/desert or some kind of storage where this carbon can stay trapped for thousands of years ? What am I missing ?

I think growing trees is better than just capturing CO2 directly as growing a large forest might have other advantages and a lot of wood can be used for normal human industry as well.

KorematsuFredt··on California Scrambles to Find Electricity to Offset Plant Closures
> You can absolutely be fired for cause as a tenured teacher in California, and it happens all the time. It's certainly more difficult than most other professions, but there is no law or policy preventing teachers from being fired.

Possible ? Yes. Does it happen often ? No.

You can read this LA times article for detailed statistics.

https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2009-may-03-me-teach...

> 3.After a 10 years of service, a teacher with a masters degree in my area makes $63K/year. Adjusting to a 12 month schedule, they'd be paid $75K year. With only a BA that drops to $54K. Hard to argue they are overpaid at that rate IMO.

I agree here. Teachers in public school are not overpaid. It is mostly the rest of the public schooling system that is bloated and overpaid but not teachers. Teachers in public schools end up spending more than 8 hours per day on school related activities and have to struggle even to get a day off as they need to find a substitute.

The rest of the non teaching staff however is mostly bloated and is a jobs program for adults. Some of them directly hurt the learning and teaching process and yet have massive power over teachers.

> the rank and file make on average 25-30% less than they could in private industry.

True. But most of them will be unemployable in private sector due to sheer incompetence and actual accountability.

KorematsuFredt··on California Scrambles to Find Electricity to Offset Plant Closures
Shutting an existing plant without having an alternative in sight is just plain stupid even if it was coal powered power plant. Higher energy prices and lack of energy also kills people and damages environment. Do you really want people to run diesel generators in their backyard when power goes off ? Do you really prefer people to buy gas powered gadgets or cars because they don't trust electric grid ? In the absence of reliably grid electricity, people might opt for alternatives that are much more damaging.

My local solar company advertises itself as "alternative to unreliable PG&E", it is expensive and not many can afford it but I can see why some people might spend their healthcare or education budget on buying those expensive solar panels.

KorematsuFredt··on California Scrambles to Find Electricity to Offset Plant Closures
Facts don't matter only feelings do - One of the California politicians.

When people say X must be treated and utility and politicians must control it, I show them PG&E as a glorious example of California's corruption and overall incompetence.

KorematsuFredt··on Diet soda may prompt food cravings, especially in women and people with obesity
> I live in India and flavored soda is considered luxury item here.

I worked for a B-School program which looked at growth opportunities for Cola in India.

One of the challenges were lack of electricity in large parts of the country. Even those who had electricity did not get it for 24x7. Those who had it uninterrupted could not afford to buy a freezer. This prevented the whole appeal of cold drinks that are not cold. Coca Cola and Pepsi invested heavily in refrigeration technologies as they mass imported cheap fridges and offered them for free. But electricity being government controlled remains a luxury in India. Coca Cola and Pepsi did crazy things to solve this problem including creating tie ups with ice makers who supply ice slabs for special events to brine based coolers than can keep things cool for 12 hours.

The results however were stunning. From 2016 to 2020, India has doubled the per capita consumption of cola per year to around 88 bottles. I think it is fair to assume that the ceiling for this number is around 1500 bottles per year because both USA and Mexico consume that much soda. Given the income difference between both countries I think that is an upper bound.

USA has 30x of India's per capita income but only 20x more soda consumption. Which makes me think Indians are going to hit that 1500 bound much much sooner than expected.

Note:

Some of our research results were fascinating and counterintuitive.

People preferred Coca Cola because it was "healthy" to a locally produced freshly squeezed sugarcane juice. The reasoning was that while the juicer center does not even have a food department clearance and is unsanitary, people had more faith in soft drink manufacturers quality control. Ice mixed with sugar cane juice was often transported via two wheelers, kept on the road and smashed into smaller pieces with a hammer.

When people were convinced that the sugar cane juice was produced in extremely clean fashion people preferred it over coke and were willing to even pay more than coke.

Companies like Paperboat in India have come into existence from these sort of insights.
