The effort that goes into these posts without addressing the basics always boggles my mind.
Take this community, you will find the ones that are good at what they do aren't just good, because of access to information, but because of the kind of mentors that have been around them or they have run into in life.
That's really the missing piece in today's internet. Despite all this information access it's still hit or miss that a kid or an adult will find the right mentor.
This is where an experienced counsellor can make a huge difference. They usually have seen many such cases and have a sense of possible positive outcomes.
So I don't know what you are raving about.
Microsoft is responsible for their shit software getting exploited first and foremost. Seriously fine Microsoft and by day after tomorrow that 3500 security engineer number will jump to something realistic.
Instead what will happen is more tightening of the walled garden, overcharging of support/security contracts and propping up of another billionaire or two. I can hear the whisky glasses clinking.
Corporations do not get to set the agenda and the narrative. When they are allowed to, the results are very predictable - in this case Microsoft will make more than they loose. Who here disagrees that is going to happen? And who here believes that is right?
The answer is simple whether its Microsoft today or Facebook and Google tomorrow win-win should not be an option when such things happen.
If you look at the documentation of what I am actually interested it is time-timeEnd or profile-profileEnd. With profile end I just don't get output on console and have to jump back and forth between these views looking at a ton of crap I am not interested in. With timeEnd I get the number I want but would like to see a "safe" approved way of where to place the timeend while dealing with async/promises/recursion separately and together.
I am used to testing different approaches within a function. Running the approaches overnight and just getting the 2 numbers printed out for each. Only if these deviate from expectations does the timeline and flamechart etc become useful. But Google debugging implementation seems to assume perf optimization is done in the opposite direction.
Just one mindblowing fact from the talk - China has poured more concrete in the last two years than the US in the last hundred.
Ideally you pay attention to the people who have done some teaching and know something about tech like Sal Khan. He understood what tools kids need only after spending a bunch of time teaching kids.
Tech is not magic just like information access is not magic. Libraries have existed for a longer time than schools have but we don't send our kids to libraries cause a good guide makes more of a diff in where kids end up in life than just access and tools.
Distribute risk. Use multiple accounts. Don't handle all work/financial stuff on a single account. Keep work and personal accounts separate. Reduce the number of hours you spend online being a data milch cow for these corps. This automatically reduces dependence. Don't allow messenger chat transcript backups to happen by just uninstalling the app every other night. Don't restore any saved transcripts on disk on reinstall.
I could go on and on but basic rule is use your imagination. Don't use these tools the way they want you to use them. Use them as you would use a tool in a workshed as an aid, not as a drug you are dependent on.
A couple of bad business decisions and they are where yahoo is today. So be smart about how you use these services and educate the non-technical folks around you.
And then they end up having to build spl apps and extensions and other garbage that work around and hack cross domain/local file policy, just so the content already on my disk can be read and searched by the browser.
When such a treasure trove of web content is accessible offline the browser can and should be the way to access it.
As the web becomes more and more a corporate sponsored attention sink strong offline support can be a valuable browser feature.
Getting rich and doing something with the riches involve two different skill sets that most people can't master in one life time.
