Kelteseth··on Surprise solar boom in Pakistan helps millions, but harms grid and power cos
Maybe this is an advantage when everybody is independent from a bad energy supplier with solar panels and batteries
Kelteseth··on Surprise solar boom in Pakistan helps millions, but harms grid and power cos
This is a solvable issue, when you look at how fast battery storage prices are falling.
Kelteseth··on Surprise solar boom in Pakistan helps millions, but harms grid and power cos
> For Murtaza, the decision to switch to solar on his farm near Lahore was an easy one. It will take him less than a year to recover the cost of installing the panels, and his electricity bill has plunged by 80 per cent, he said.

That's amazing. I sure hope we continue this path to become a solarpunk world.

Kelteseth··on ’Brain rot‘ named Oxford Word of the Year 2024
You do know that there exist more games than just candy crush? There are many games that I personally would order in the same magnitude of culture importance than musical symphonies. Portal 2, World of Warcraft, The last of us, Breath of the wild, just to name a few.

And this is exactly what people mean, when they say that this account spreads misinformation.
Kelteseth··on A computational analysis of potential algorithmic bias on X during the election
> This technical report presents findings from a two-phase analysis investigating potential algorithmic bias in engagement metrics on X (formerly Twitter) by examining Elon Musk’s account against a group of prominent users and subsequently comparing Republican-leaning versus Democrat-leaning accounts. The analysis reveals a structural engagement shift around mid-July 2024, suggesting platform-level changes that influenced engagement metrics for all accounts under examination. The date at which the structural break (spike) in engagement occurs coincides with Elon Musk’s formal endorsement of Donald Trump on 13th July 2024.

So X _is_ Elons personal propaganda machine.

Kelteseth··on There's Almost No Gitlab
This is fine for our use case, because the GitLab instance is not exposed to the internet.
Kelteseth··on There's Almost No Gitlab
I have maintain our Gitlab instance for the last 5 years. Zero issues, and I do a sudo apt update once a month. So I guess some people thought using the manual setup was the way to go?
Kelteseth··on There's Almost No Gitlab
The weirdest thing is when I search for GitLab integration or bots, but I _always_ see them hosted on Github. Maybe this is just because GitLab has still god awful Google indexing.
Kelteseth··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Wasn't this number flawed, because it mapped the energy needs 1:1? Like, the efficiency of a heat pump or a battery is vastly better than current motors or burning oil.
Kelteseth··on USA Today joins the Washington Post and L.A. Times in not endorsing a candidate
> to avoid backlash from Donald Trump if he wins the presidency.

This already feels like a dystopian nightmare.

Kelteseth··on Germany's Mittelstand Is Collapsing
> Germany will yet again throw billions at the continuously failing energiewende (energy transition), which is one of the main reasons for Germany’s economic problems to begin with.

Nope. It was Putin that invaded Ukraine. We are now back to pre-war levels of gas and electricity prices. Conservative media just loves to blame everything on the green transition.

And all other points the article makes are absurd. We already have a phrase for that in Germany: "Aber die Gruuuueeeennneeen". It's like thanks Obama. Russian troll farms just love this.

Kelteseth··on The IPv6 Transition
You are also forced to use a seat belt. Calling it authoritarianism when we want to enforce a standard is absurd.
Kelteseth··on The IPv6 Transition
Our local German teledata internet provider uses CGNAT, and it is a mess of random timeouts.
Kelteseth··on The IPv6 Transition
Agreeing on a common standard is not authoritarianism.
Kelteseth··on The IPv6 Transition
I've mentioned this previously. Without government-mandated standards, implementation could take years. We apply this approach to numerous areas; why should IP be an exception?
Kelteseth··on Raspberry Pi SD Cards and the Raspberry Pi Bumper
Sound good, but the performance numbers are a bit abstract for me. Any real world benchmarks?

Kelteseth··on Godot team block dev for political reasons
It's funny I feel only people how never used Godot call these shots.
Kelteseth··on LG TVs Start Showing Ads on Screensavers
> I did happen to have a pre-existing Apple account

Yes, this is the difference. I was only able to accept the terms and conditions after we got the popup on the iPad. Until then tvOS Apps just did not download without any error message.

Kelteseth··on LG TVs Start Showing Ads on Screensavers
And thats why I recommend anybody to never ever connect your new TV to the internet. Just buy an Apple TV. No ads, fast ui, regular updates and overall great experience. I have tried 3 different android tv alternatives with the NV Shield and mibox but the all suffered the same laggy ui, crashes and ads.

Note: You do _need_ an iPad or an iPhone to accept the terms and condition to download apps. I had to go through the trouble to logout my iPad account and then to login my uncles new apple account on my iPad, just so he could use his new Apple TV.

Kelteseth··on Kaspersky deletes itself, installs UltraAV antivirus without warning
> To make things worse, while some users could uninstall UltraAV using the software’s uninstaller, those who tried removing it using uninstall apps saw it reinstalled after a reboot, causing further concerns about a potential malware infection.

This why one should only use the build in Windows antivirus these days.

Kelteseth··on Swift 6
I recently tried SwiftGodot, because I found Swift for game Dev very interesting in comparison to csharps GC stalls. Sadly it does not yet support sharing pre build Windows development libraries[1]. Compilation does take quite some time, even on my beefy 16 core Ryzen. The changelog did mention multi threaded Swift package manager improvements on Windows though.

Kelteseth··on Wind Becomes Britain's Largest Electricity Source
Hasn't this been largely debunked? It's the same material we use for airplanes.
Kelteseth··on What's new in C++26 (part 1)
I would argue C++20 is totally fine. MSVC does not yet has a C++23 flag and it will be internally replaced with 'latest', aka some C++26 features, when you use it. This took us by surprise, because they deprecated some enum conversions and thus our clang-cl CI failed for openCV, with the latest llvm. I still fail to understand why enabling a specific C++ version, automatically means that it is considered stable. At least give use C++23-experimental or something /rant.
Kelteseth··on Ask HN: Developer PC setup automations for company owned devices
We use a mix of winget and chocolatey for everything via a python script. We also check the tool version when we configure our project with CMake. Sadly, we had to implement the version check for each application.

Sounds promising. Git LFS works ok ish, had often issues with it.
