KekDemaga··on Are rich people meaner? Two teams find errors in each other’s work
Lets say you work hard and with some savings you go ahead and buy an iPhone, that iPhone is produced by workers in the third world who make much less than you and costs much more than they will make in a month.

Now lets say we add a few zeros to your income to move you from the top 1% globally to the top .1%. Jobs that pay this kind of money are difficult, so you work really hard as well. Instead of an iPhone made in the third world you buy a yacht or sports car made in the first. The first world workers make much less than you do, but have a pretty good standard of living globally speaking (but not compared to you).

What is fundamentally different about those two cases? Can it really be said with a straight face that one is greedier than the other? In fact, it seems the "wealthy" person actually created better outcomes for the people creating his luxury product as compared to the first example.

This is a glass house sort of situation when you really consider it.

KekDemaga··on Are rich people meaner? Two teams find errors in each other’s work
The super wealthy proclaiming without citing evidence that the mega wealthy are evil or cheated somehow is a pet peeve of mine, it just seems petty when you put it into a global context.
KekDemaga··on Are rich people meaner? Two teams find errors in each other’s work
>Rich people are assholes in my experience. They may have better manners and stuff, but their intentions are evil

I'd keep that attitude in check, if you are in a western nation you are likely in the top 1% - 2% in terms of income globally. Things would end pretty badly for you if 98% of the planet decided people like you are evil.

YES! finally the 3rd party shipper Amazon uses will be as convenient and efficient as the postal service!

Man I wish he was my math teacher, I probably would of been much more engaged back then.
KekDemaga··on Multiple Heap Buffer Overflows In the Windows DNS Client
>The DNS caching service that handles the storage of DNS responses automatically restarts when it crashes, and it won’t notify the user of the crash.

Programmer one: "It keeps crashing!"

Programmer two: "Just remove the bit that tells the user it crashed and ship it!"

KekDemaga··on Tech companies are misusing creativity in their quest to change the world
If that was true we would have tons of restaurants serving caviar and foie gras and very few serving fast food.

Communism Light, all that great communism flavor with less murder (so far)
KekDemaga··on Rejecting a candidate for over-qualification results in age bias
I think it depends on the applicant, I'm willing to do such a project but the prices I will demand if hired will be markedly higher than a firm that offered me a simpler project that consumed less time. The way I see it is you have limited the risk you have undertaken in hiring me thus I can see more of the fruits of my labor.
KekDemaga··on Identifying a Large Number of Fake Followers on Instagram
Alternative idea for a service: Identify other “influencers” in your market niche and buy them thousands of obviously fake followers, when in discussions with advertisers point this out: "X has more followers, that is true, but look at the quality of them most of these are obvious bots. That is why my rates are 20% higher."

KekDemaga··on American Nazis at Madison Square Garden, 1939
Could a reasonable person think that he intended to harm someone on the stage? If so that was the correct legal outcome no matter how unfortunate.
KekDemaga··on Hyperloop One Becomes ‘Virgin Hyperloop One’
The question isn't "will this ever work?", the question is (while keeping with your airplane analogy) is Elon Musk's design closer to the Wright brothers airplane or Da Vinci's ornithopter. I'd guess the latter personally.
KekDemaga··on Hyperloop One Becomes ‘Virgin Hyperloop One’
That sounds really expensive.

KekDemaga··on Unsent text accepted as dead man's will by Australian court
I wonder if you'd feel the same if you got pulled over and had a few thousand in cash taken by police under the assumption that it was involved in a crime without any recourse. I suspect you'd prefer the literal interpretation of the constitution in that case.

I too am curious. I had trouble getting started with Django but once I tired Flask everything seemed to make sense.
KekDemaga··on NextDoor Says Users Who Share Posts with Reporters Could Be Kicked Off the Site
I don't give my personal information to mean spirited bigots. I certainly reject any suggestion I provide evidence of my race as that seems like a Nazi tactic and rather unamerican.

KekDemaga··on Will automation put an end to the American trucker?
Laws would have to change with a person in the cab you are talking about Grand Theft, Kidnapping, and Robbery. With an AI it's just Grand Theft meaning you'd spend much less time in prison.
KekDemaga··on NextDoor Says Users Who Share Posts with Reporters Could Be Kicked Off the Site
>Oh, all these people on NextDoor have carefully built validated statistical models based on clean, individually gathered data?

Take a look at FBI crime statistics by race and gender sometime. Witnessing a Asian woman committing a property or violent crime is statistically speaking like winning the lottery. If I was to assess the risk of an Asian woman walking down the street I'd rate the risk as lower than any other demographic group, is that racist and sexist?

KekDemaga··on Universal Basic Income and the threat of tyranny
> we put everyone to work

> Work, but work less (adjust according to demand as needed, adjust compensation as necessary).

"Hey Kek you are a programmer right?"

"I am indeed"

"We need you to work 80 hour weeks because we don't have many programmers, don't worry though we will give you another half ration to make up for it"

"No, i'm only going to work 20 hours like the street cleaners"

What does this fictional UBI government do then? Put a gun to my head and force me to work seems to be the most common solution to this problem historically. The problem is all human work can't be divided evenly among all humans, we need doctors more than we need fast food workers thus doctors typically work longer hours. For the system to be "fair" we can't pay doctors all that much more than fast food workers, maybe 10% - 15% or even 100% more but not the 1000% more they see currently. What if doctors decide that isn't enough and all become fast food workers instead? What do we do then? That is the problem UBI and Communism has yet to solve.

KekDemaga··on Study finds putting people in prison increases re-offence rate vs. probation
What is "the prison"? A state run organization? In that case why would some bureaucrat care if his budget goes up, he's a union member most likely thus his pay is more related to time employed than the budget being fiscally sound. Now consider this is a private prison, why would they ever not release someone? Releasing someone lowers their costs and may provide a reward, on the other hand they have to continue to pay for a prisoners upkeep and have no chance at a reward if they vote for him to stay.

This is all moot because it isn't prisons that decide who gets to go free but a parole board. That's part of a judicial process typically unaffiliated from the prison itself.

KekDemaga··on What happened when I opened a restaurant in Portland
Cheap people aren't the type of client you should try to attract to a restaurant, once the deal goes away they will move on to the next sucker. I worked at a place that sold dollar cheese steaks as a way to get people in the door, the dining room was full but a party of 4 would order something like 4 cheese steaks with 4 waters and leave a 50 cent tip. They changed the price to two dollars and the cheapos revolted, left bad yelp reviews and everything.
