KeithMajhor··on Fuck passwords
How do you stop reusing passwords? Do you have some scheme for generating sentences of words based on the domain of the site?
KeithMajhor··on Switch statements versus polymorphism
OOP has problems adding existing functionality to new types. Interfaces are a go at the problem but they fall short for several reasons. Clojure's protocols are a better solution (as far as I can tell). Clojure also provides multi-methods and hierarchies for more sophisticated function dispatch. Their use and the reasoning behind their design is well documented on Clojure's website.

A large portion of the community is REALLY sensitive towards this sort of thing. Also, more people can upvote than downvote.

> That is, a 0.8% difference in percentile ranking increased the specified output by 300-500%. Now what do you think a 10% percentile ranking difference would imply?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_deviation

The difference in intellectual capacity between the top 10%, 1% and 0.1% (or 90, 99, 99.9 percentile) isn't necessarily proportional to the "percentile ranking difference".

KeithMajhor··on Google: Introducing Closure Stylesheets
Dart doesn't add much in the way of syntactic-sugar which is the only problem addressed by CoffeeScript.
KeithMajhor··on 2 is a code smell
What about sub-vectors? That smells like a 2 to me...

I'd rather call fold or foldr myself and KNOW how it handled more than 2 arguments. I'd rather do it for add-vectors too, just so it was consistent. You have to define primitives somewhere. Even if what you call elsewhere is some fluffy handle-everything function. At the very least, I wouldn't call it a smell.

KeithMajhor··on "Hello World" in Dart, compiled to JavaScript
It's not right now. It's a lousy CoffeeScript. The thing that makes dart good is that it could, some day, have it's own runtime. Also, the language is being designed by the team that did v8. So I'd imagine they plan to build support into chrome at some point.

I can't make any sense of this. I think it might be broken.

Sent from my iPad (finally that's relevant)

KeithMajhor··on Poll: Which smartphone platform do you own and use mainly?
I have an Android phone and recently bought an iPad. After experiencing both platforms I think I'll be buying an iPhone 5 next.

If I we're going to do android again I'd get a phone where I could install stock android (like the Nexus S).

Oh also, I really hope WP7 doesn't take off. The new wave of smart phones run webkit almost exclusively right now and I'd like it to stay that way.

KeithMajhor··on Mark Cuban: If you want to see more jobs created -- change patent laws
Oh I thought you meant, "Let's not legalize marijuana. Think of all the DEA agents that would lose their jobs!"

Yes I would agree. I think lawyers are generally pretty smart people and we're losing the prosperity they could be creating.

KeithMajhor··on Mark Cuban: If you want to see more jobs created -- change patent laws
No. If a job is unnecessary then it shouldn't be done. The fact that people need to have jobs, even jobs which create no value, is a systemic failure.
KeithMajhor··on Mark Cuban: If you want to see more jobs created -- change patent laws
I was being serious.
KeithMajhor··on Mark Cuban: If you want to see more jobs created -- change patent laws
I've heard that argument and I just don't know how to respond to it. Why would you ever want to _create_ jobs. People don't need jobs. They need food and cars and what not. To my way of thinking jobs should be actively destroyed.
KeithMajhor··on [dead]
I've heard that before and I'm genuinely curious. Why does it matter?
KeithMajhor··on Serial cable for iPod approved by Apple
Here is a Bluetooth breakout like I described: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10559

It's cheaper than the cable. You don't need to implement any protocols.

KeithMajhor··on Serial cable for iPod approved by Apple
Why is this better than Bluetooth? All the iOS devices have it and there are breakout boards with RS232. There are even some that are cheaper than this cable...

I can't speak for anybody else but I still love Google.
KeithMajhor··on Minecraft Can Now be Used to Model and Print Objects via 3D Printer
It's actually a pretty good game for engineers. Also, it rewards you for having basic knowledge of digital design. Here's a hidden door I made using pistons which were just added to the game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z98iFceC0zY

Also there's an editor called mcedit that you can extend with python. For example I wrote a little script to trace caves and fill them with dirt.

I couldn't give the game a stronger recommendation.

KeithMajhor··on Thorium nuclear reactors: a possible solution of the energy crisis? (video)
Enough focus to say, "Hey, good idea". I think it would be better for all of us if Google got any of the potential patents as well. Even if it isn't their main business.
KeithMajhor··on Thorium nuclear reactors: a possible solution of the energy crisis? (video)
Did you watch the video?

The reactors he presented appeared to be much simpler (so... they'd likely be cheaper).

KeithMajhor··on Calculate n + 1 without using + or - or * or /
Arbitrary addition, subtraction and multiplication without arithmetic signs.

int add( int a, int b ) { while ( a ) { int c = a & b; b ^= a; a = c << 1; } return b; }

int sub( int a, int b ) { return add( a, add( ~b, 1 ) ); }

int mul( int a, int b ) { int c = 0; while ( a ) { if ( a & 1 ) c = add( c, b ); a >>= 1; b <<= 1; } return c; }

KeithMajhor··on Machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, within a few decades.
I agree. Something like this maybe?

KeithMajhor··on Machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, within a few decades.
I feel like this is pretty non sequitur. He seems to imply that above some magic number of transistors intelligence will simply manifest itself. Intelligence is more than just computational power.
KeithMajhor··on Linus Torvalds on userspace filesystems
Personally, I love how confrontational he is. You don't see very many people who are that passionately practical. It's oddly inspiring...
KeithMajhor··on Apple's new multitouch patent
Snippet from the article:

"It covers the basic user interface concept of moving touch-screen content with multitouch gestures--not just one particular way to programmatically recognize one particular gesture for this purpose, but any or all ways to do so," Mueller said. "This patent describes the solution at such a high level that it effectively lays an exclusive claim to the problem itself, and any solutions to it."

KeithMajhor··on The Linux desktop experience is killing Linux on the desktop, Part II
It's a little bit hypocritical. But can we stop _this_. If you don't want to read articles about distaste of desktop linux. Don't click the link and/or downvote.
KeithMajhor··on The US IPO cartel
I kept trying to figure out what the divots in the line were supposed to indicate...
KeithMajhor··on Want Hacker News Comment Scores Back? Check out HNPoints.com
That just isn't fair at all. He clearly wants to fix things. That's why he's experimenting.

How does hiding scores reduce the quality of content on HN? I'm still not seeing any relationship between the issue and what you're complaining about...

KeithMajhor··on Want Hacker News Comment Scores Back? Check out HNPoints.com
If you define broken as "I don't like it".

The person you're trying to persuade is PG. His metric for "broken" is the quality of HN. Make an argument don't just say things.

KeithMajhor··on Want Hacker News Comment Scores Back? Check out HNPoints.com
I agree actually... It would be nice if there was a visual indication for greater than 1 as well as less.

I don't miss the actual scores though. Just indicating positive/negative/neutral would be enough for me.
