If they look unhappy, maybe the customer will give them bad ratings for bad customer experience…

In France, licenses have been given for free in limited numbers, and with the right to resell them on the market. So their price have increased up to 200-350k€. So some people made a lot of money there (and they one accept cash, so you know what can happen with the taxes). Recent buyers are in a bad position because they get it for a high price and now risk their value to drop because of the recent competition.
Kankuro··on German traffic light stays red for 28 years (2015)
For pedestrians it is true, but for vehicles it is quite an exaggeration (for France). Well, for the red light, because for the yellow light is often understood as "accelerate so you can pass become it becomes red". When I go to more respectful countries (Nordic or Germanic countries, or Japan) I am always (pleasantly) shocked by how respectful drivers are. For example in Austria people literally braked to let me pass at a pedestrian crossing on a large road. In France you can wait for minutes for a car to stop or for the traffic to stop.

About the same in France: heating oil was traditionally used to heat houses, but with the development of nuclear electricity it consumption dropped. French government back then helped the refineries by lowering the taxes and pushed the car industry to develop diesel cars. And we have been stuck with these diesel cars since this era.

It's a vicious circle because owner of diesel cars may think twice before voting if a candidate proposes to raise the taxes on diesel, even if year after year we get reports about the number of early deaths because of fine particles…

Kankuro··on French workers win legal right to avoid checking work email out-of-hours
> There will always be employees who want to do a bit of extra, stay a bit longer, answer emails at 10pm, to help make progress in their career and get promotions.

Additional work should not help getting promotions/a raise, but only a one-time bonus (proportional to the overtime/achievement): - if the person stops overtime after that, (s)he will continue to enjoy the rise forever. - working more does not help by itself to go to the next level (being more productive, getting new skills allowing to transition to another role) - (it's even more toxic when stacked ranking is put it place: those who work "normal" hours will almost never get a raise/promotion).

Kankuro··on Germany's New Crowdfunded Train
In France, for a 5:30 hours ride, I pay most of the time 75€, 40€ in off-season, as sometimes as much as 100€. The most painful experience is buying a ticket for Christmas season when everybody is trying to buy at the opening of the sales: a few seconds late and you lose 10€. I once lost dozen of euros when my card was refused. It feels like these riots-like black Friday I sometimes see on tv...
Kankuro··on It Takes 6 Days to Change 1 Line of Code (2015)
I once had a priority list with a few items had a "low" priority, the rest being "high", "very high" and "extremely high". It gave me a depressing feeling because we had to delay stuff that was supposedly "high" priority for someone.

I am prompted that each time I activate the GPS to use OsmAnd (for example).

The worst is that if you accept it once, this setting is saved and there is no obvious way in the UI to change it back (which was possible in the past I think).

To reset it, go in the Applications manager in the settings, choose Google Play Services and reset all its data.

There is no way it is a bug, someone had to think and put this deceptive behaviour as a feature (and someone had to design its deceptive UI, someone had to do unit testing for this deceptive behaviour, someone had to QA it…).

Kankuro··on ODROID-C2 Compared to Raspberry Pi 3 and Orange Pi Plus
I bought a odroid-X2 with a eMMC chip 3 years ago and it is more than ok for a "simple" use (hosting my contacts, calendar and RSS for example). But for inserting in bulk 25000 (small) records a day in a Postgres DB it was really slow. When I had to reinitialize the DB from the raw data, it took so long (7 millions records) that I moved the DB to my desktop and let the downloading part on the odroid.

I read that faster eMMC chips were released, but I don't have any figure.

Well, putting text as images prevent the use of a dictionary browser-addon ("Rikaichan" for Firefox for example).

These three persons were not armed.

My feeling (being a European) is that I would feel much more threatened by the fact than people I can see in the street can have a gun than I would feel safer because some random strangers could protect me with their guns.

From time to time there are some news that someone get stabbed because for having allegedly had a bad look on someone else. With guns, you don't even have the option to run.

Kankuro··on OpenStreetMap is the Most Important thing in Geo
I contribute from time to time to OSM. What bothers me a bit is my productivity when doing surveys with my phone and OSMTracker. The GPS is not precise enough to record doors locations precisely, and taking photos is time consuming (I feel quite productive when tracing roads against satellite views using JOSM, though). I can imagine that Google's stack (with their Google cars and adapted home-grown software) must be something like 100 or 1000 times more productive.

Also, OpenStreetMap provides the data, but Google aggregates the data, which makes very cheap to add/search a lot of information (ex: shops) available from on-line sources (such as web sites). I don't expect OSM to have the same amount of information any time soon.

Kankuro··on Fukushima
I guess he was talking about higher walls around the (few) nuclear plants, not the whole country. That would not make the country "a jail where the only place I can see the ocean is from on top of a mountain".

Kankuro··on Google’s $6B Miscalculation on the EU
The ODbL license is not compatible with the Creative Commons license. (1) I know about their goal, and I also know that they are eager to collaborate with OpenStreeMap. So they would the sue. (2) I think it is the Database Directive of the EU which protects the databases, even if it is made of factual information.

To be more specific about my case, I wanted to import into OpenStreetMap the latin names ("romaji") of places from Wikipédia. But I had to check if it was allowed around the world. I read that in Australia it is not a problem, but it is hard to know about the rest of the world.

Kankuro··on Firefox 42 will not allow unsigned extensions
> only US English speakers will be allowed to disable this requirement You can install any non-English locale (language-pack) on top of Firefox. I do that (because I want to be able to switch from a language to another). So it is a two-steps installation.
Kankuro··on Google’s $6B Miscalculation on the EU
In the EU, it is illegal to copy a database of another entity even if it contains factual information (you can copy individual facts, but not a DB). Source: I realized that when I wondered if it was possible to copy names from Wikipedia into OpenStreetmap. The Wikimedia foundation ("owner" of the DB) is unlikely to sue OSM.
Kankuro··on France Says It Will Ban Uber’s Low-Cost Service in New Year
I think that paying back would a way to go out of this system. But the loser will be the tax payer. When the state/politics decided to give licences for free (a long time ago) and then let the offer and the demand decide the price, they created a speculative bubble: every buyer expected to resell it for at least the same price or make a profit (often a big one). Now, if this market is opened to more actors, the lasts to buy will get a big debt out of their deal and may be in a bad position for the rest of their life.

For me the ones to blame are those politics who created this situation. Concerning the taxi drivers who made a big profit, why should they be blamed for a system the state has put in place? (well, I do for being so greedy and making the taxi a transportation for affluent people)

Note also that taxi drivers are well known for hidding parts of their revenues (proof or source: none). Because of that, taking the taxi is really the last resort for me.

Kankuro··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flashcards
What do you mean by "a cli version"? A version that would run in a terminal? Or a version that would present one card when the command is invoked? In this case, how would the user enter the answer (again, hard, good, easy)? It would require Anki a way to bind this answer to the right card (the algorithm for choosing a card should be deterministic, or a card ID should be passed to the command for answering).
Kankuro··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flashcards
I did, but only recently. My listening is improving, but until that Japanese was for me only a written language. Also, it's easy to create cards from a dictionary, but it is more complicated to find audio resources for specific vocabulary (maybe it is possible to get them from sites like forvo.com). I wish I had taken a more diversified approach earlier. The first months/years, I almost only used Anki and a grammar book. A better approach maybe would have been to start from simple texts or dialogues.
Kankuro··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flashcards
I have used Anki a lot to learn Japanese. I think that the principle is not that great for languages. It helped me to remember the vocabulary and the kanji, but it only help me to acquire visual memory. When I hear Japanese, I am way too slow to make the relationship between the Japanese word and the associated concept. What comes to my mind first is the French word (my native language) and now I feel like I am learning the same vocabulary again (and the fact that Japanese has a lot of homophones does not help). Having sentences cards and audio cards helped, but that is barely enough.

My advice would be not to rely too much on Anki. I considered it as a silver bullet because it was so much better that using a notebook (like I did in my childhood), that was a mistake. Find other way to practice. Take lessons (maybe one day I'll try these Skype conversion offers), read articles, watch tv show with subtitles, find people you cant talk to…
