K7PJP··on Dear Roku, you ruined my TV
> What really bugs me are the "Remastered" versions of songs on Spotify that sound like … [a] soulless robo-producer repaint job.

Spotify serves up a stereo version of The Flamingos' "I Only Have Eyes for You" that completely destroys the atmosphere of the song. It's nearly criminal.

K7PJP··on Radio Garden
“Our original configuration was fully HTTPS-enabled; however, we had to adjust this when browser manufacturers started blocking HTTPS websites from loading HTTP streams.

Approximately 20% of the stations featured on Radio Garden are accessible via HTTP streams, which would become inaccessible if we switched entirely to HTTPS. Given the recent changes in Chrome's behavior towards forcing an HTTPS connection, we are considering moving back to an all-HTTPS setup in the near future.”

K7PJP··on Love, Death, and Computers
"In addition to birthdate, there should be a deceased date field in Contacts. That data can be used for both memorial purposes and to prevent Siri suggestions about making a posthumous birthday call. There should also be an easy way to archive threads with a deceased loved one in iMessage to preserve those memories."
K7PJP··on The history of Alt+number sequences
Ah, is this one of the reasons Windows users are so attached to full-sized keyboards with numpads? In any discussion of TKL-or-smaller keyboards, there’s a cohort of people baffled at how any keyboard without a numpad could be fit for purpose. I take it this Windows feature is among the reasons why.
K7PJP··on MFJ is ceasing its on-site production
He was trying to sell the company. The scuttlebutt is he declined an offer from DX Engineering, which is a shame because that would've been perhaps the best match.
K7PJP··on Lorenzo Milam, pioneer of community radio (2020)
Glad the KRAB archive is back up, I think it was down for a while.

There’s a great short documentary from 1964 about KRAB and Milam. Originally made for the CBC.

K7PJP··on Why is the mouse cursor slightly tilted and not straight?
I'm left handed, use the mouse on the right, and even use my right hand for a laptop trackpad. I keep my left hand on the keyboard while mousing, and use modifiers in concert.

Perhaps this both explains why I've never quite understood the aversion to mice, and also why I prefer smaller (TKL or smaller) keyboards.

K7PJP··on Pinball Map: Crowd-sourced worldwide map of public pinball machines
It’s a terrible game, very slow and boring, but you must play it once. I really appreciate the dedication of any collector who brings that behemoth to pinball shows and keeps it running.
K7PJP··on At Least 15% of Reddit Content Is Corporate Trolls Manipulating Public Opinion
I am fairly convinced that /r/worldnews is modded by, and overrun with, US State Department and other spooky-type shills.
K7PJP··on Fairphone 5: Keeping it 10/10?
I'm in the same situation, but I just keep a USB-C to headphone adapter attached to the cassette adapter and I'm good to go.

K7PJP··on My Unhealthy Relationship with Keyboards
Me, too.

All of my custom keyboard dreams start from the Apple Magic Keyboard as the basis. I want all 78 keys. I just want them split, and Columnar, and… something like ZSA's new Voyager but preserving the things that make the Magic Keyboard great is what I have in mind.

K7PJP··on Car allergic to vanilla ice cream (2000)
I've got an HP Laser Printer from about 15 years or so. About once a year, the printer stops responding and I have to remove the board, put it in the oven for 10 minutes or so to revive it.
K7PJP··on iOS 17 is available today
> since there's an elaborate explanation (not that it's needed)

Clearly the explanationn is needed. Most of us didn't understand what you meant. After grasping what you're asking for, I get your request, and I think it'd be nice if Apple implemented this for you and others, but I don't think iOS is broken, nor would I enable such an option if it were implemented – it wouldn't solve a problem for me.

You might try to understand that you are in a minority in wanting this, and that the current behavior is actually acceptable for the vast majority of iPhone users.

K7PJP··on iOS 17 is available today
Yes, it's now addressed.

In my view, it didn't make Siri useless for setting timers, it meant there was no universal sleep timer, as I refused to use the "Stop Playing" feature.

Your OS is now updated. the updated applications that comprise iOS 17 then have to check and update the data, particularly in cases where other devices tied to iCloud also require updating. It is likely that if you also have a Mac or iPad that isn't using the most recent point releases, the lists or the Photos will not update to the new behavior.
K7PJP··on iOS 17 is available today
> groceries lists in reminders should create automatic sections, it doesn’t work

This took a short time to kick in for me after I updated. Make sure the list is set as a "Groceries" list type, and try adding something to the list.

K7PJP··on Grindr Loses Almost Half Its Staff on 2-Day RTO Requirement
Yes, the railroad industry literally made this argument last year when (successfully) appealing to the Biden administration to block a railworkers strike.

> During hearings before the board on wages … the railroads argued that labor from railroad workers does not contribute to their profits. “The Carriers maintain that capital investment and risk are the reasons for their profits, not any contributions from labor,” the PEB report said. “The Carriers assert that since employees have been fairly and adequately paid for their efforts… then they have no claim to share in the [profits].”

K7PJP··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
> (I haven't used a Mac in ages, but I assume the situation is very similar there, too).

It isn't. Well-behaved Mac programs use ~/Library/Application Support/ and ~/Library/Preferences/ for these sort of things.

GUI-based software that craps on my home folder doesn't last long on my system unless it must be there for some reason.

For Terminal-based software, though, unfortunately it is common, as it's just another bit of UNIX software.

K7PJP··on Open Circuits: The Inner Beauty of Electronic Components
I'd recommend Infrastructure: A Guide to the Industrial Landscape by Brian Hayes http://industrial-landscape.com/

It covers everything from railroad tracks, antenna towers, highway overpasses, power lines, grain elevators, oil refineries, steel mills, and more… Lots of great pictures and detailed explanations.

And I also bought "Open Circuits" and find it to be both beautiful and illuminating.

K7PJP··on Uninstall the NightOwl app
This option wasn't available in 2018, when NightOwl was released. I had to test our application's Dark Mode implementation and NightOwl was super-useful then. I'm glad Apple made it easier to toggle dark mode in the interim.
K7PJP··on Uninstall the NightOwl app
In 2018, when NightOwl was released, some or all of these affordances didn't yet exist.
K7PJP··on The unix69 keyboard layout: nerdy and nice
Perhaps they're using these keyboards on a Mac? MacOS doesn't really use F keys. They're instead dedicated to some system-wide controls (media, volume, display brightness) by default, and you'd need to chord to use them as function keys. They're rarely assigned to anything anyway.
K7PJP··on Apple plans a slow, appointment-only rollout of Vision Pro
I had an Apple Watch series 0 delivered to me on the day it was released. No appointment needed.
K7PJP··on What to do if your house is overflowing with books
Discard out. They're just inert objects, with little utility. You won't find those books at the public library any more because libraries ruthlessly weed out books people no longer want. Otherwise there'd be no room for the new books people do want.
K7PJP··on Retro Computer Museum
If the Cinerama can be saved, so then can the LCM, one should hope. The LCM isn’t in the same kind of prime location the Cinerama is. I picture the terms to be different, no pre-existing 3rd party to hand things off to, and getting some of the key people back is going to be a challenge.

To bring up App Switcher, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, then pause in the center of the screen. Then, to browse the open apps, swipe right, then tap the app you want to use.

You can also quickly switch between open apps on an iPhone with Face ID by swiping right or left along the bottom edge of the screen. But try App Switcher first, it'll provide clearer orientation.

K7PJP··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
> For a while, every morning, I ask Siri directions to [name of my company] to gauge how bad traffic is and how long it will take.

My work address is in my own contact entry. I'd just ask Siri to take me to work.

K7PJP··on IKEA Redesigns Its Bestsellers
People who live in apartments in the US tend to move to another apartment frequently, either to get a better unit, to avoid a sharp rent increase, or to move to another neighborhood. We moved 7 times over a 20 year span.

> Same thing happened when I learned bass.

I didn't enjoy playing until I swapped out the strings on my Ibanez with some Rotosounds. The tonal change was significant.
