JustSomeNobody··on Apple previews Live Speech, Personal Voice, and more new accessibility features
Trust. That's an interesting word.

Personally, I don't trust corporations. Their motive is always money.

How is this at all an answer to @jayd16's question?

The number of phones Google has sold is completely irrelevant to the fact that they too do local ai and have hardware on device for processing it.

My voice is my passport.
JustSomeNobody··on Kids who get smartphones earlier become adults with worse mental health
It's not smartphones. It's Facebook, twitter, reddit, HN, etc. Yes, even HN.

Smartphones simply mean that kids have near constant access to it all.

And it's just as bad for adults.

> The overall migration rate in America today is historically low, and mobility has fallen since the 1980s for all kinds of demographic groups.

Nearly every single economic disadvantage the "not rich" endures always goes back to Reagan.

JustSomeNobody··on He wrote a book on a rare subject. Then a ChatGPT replica appeared on Amazon
For a while now we have had formulaic writing where people write under a successful dead (or almost dead) author's name.

This is just using computers to do the same. Now anyone can write the next Borne novel.

JustSomeNobody··on After 20 Years as a Prosecutor in Illinois, I Quit
You don't fix this at the jail level. You don't fix this at the court level. You don't fix this at the police level.

This is a society problem. You want gun toting thugs shooting shit up? Treat people like gun toting thugs!

Fix society. Give people a way out of this shit.

But no. That's too hard. That takes empathy. And empathy is "woke".

JustSomeNobody··on Go with PHP
Okay, but you didn't mention Go at all in the article.

Jeffrey Way is a really good teacher, btw.

JustSomeNobody··on When you lose the ability to write, you also lose some of your ability to think
I would agree. At least for some people. The act of trying to code something and failing and then failing again before I finally get it right is what I enjoy about coding. Sitting down to write code and it just works each and every time is boring. It's like writing boiler plate UI code. But... other people want to succeed quickly so they can show people they succeeded quickly. For them, ChatGPT is like a super power.

Edit: I've had conversations with people who write. We have come to an agreement that there are writers who love the process of writing. They want to BE writers. Then there are people who want to HAVE BEEN a writer. ChatGPT was meant for these people.

Normal Americans don't generate something that generates many millions of dollars.

So, an actor on a popular show can get, say 500k per episode. And, sure, they have to be good at acting for the show to be good. However, without good writing, they wouldn't have a good show either. The writers don't get that much per episode. They might get that per SEASON. Seems largely unfair.
JustSomeNobody··on How to design software architecture for startups
I wish blogger driven development would go out of fashion, but I guess it never will. People need to be engineers. Stop trying to figure out how to solve your problem by copying what others have done to solve theirs.
JustSomeNobody··on Tipping at self-checkout has customers crying ‘emotional blackmail’
Table service: I tip (even if service is bad, I tip. I just let them know the service was bad via the percent).

Everything else: My discretion. But I'm not obligated one bit.

Great, so now tenant is required to have the app to pay rent. But to use the app to pay rent, you have to agree to the ToS which includes expressly consenting to having your bio data scooped up.

JustSomeNobody··on How to reduce stress and overcome anxiety as a software developer
> ... and/or doing the right thing.

As long as it is ethical, doing the "right thing" is doing what you're paid to do. If that means, for example, ship code that you might not like or think is not perfect, that's fine. It's not your code.

Don't worry, if you're still coding at 50, you'll have learned that you are not your job. As Elsa says, Let it go.

Sort of off topic - But I think consumer UPS have fallen short. A) They stick with SLA and not something like LiFePO4 and B) They haven't fully embraced USB-PD.

A UPS with LiFePO4 and USB-PD should give you hours of backup power.
