JumpinJack_Cash··on Did an experienced alpinist leave his girlfriend to die atop a mountain?
But why though? It was his GF not wife without prenup

What's the rationale to accuse him?

JumpinJack_Cash··on Ask HN: You have one year to make $1M. What's your plan?
You can get there in about 12 hours.

Just fly wherever your current wealth amount figure equates to $1M in local purchasing power vs. where you live right now.

That way you'd also fulfill the next step in the hedonistic tradmill after you make $1M:

"It's not sufficient that I win, everyone else must lose"

2 birds with one stone.

JumpinJack_Cash··on Asian AI startups launch Mythos-like models
WHen push came to shove Trump backed down on Jan 6th / the institutions held their ground.

On the other hand Xi is President for Life and absolute autocrat of China.

This answers your question in a pretty compelling way.

JumpinJack_Cash··on Ships keep moving through Hormuz despite strike
Ok let's say buried pipelines under the sand , it's the ideal insulant against the relatively low power of suicide drones.

Haven't you seen the amount of sand they displaced for the foundations of "the Line" project?

Let's say dig a hole in the desert build the pipeline and then cover it with 15ft of sand that you previously excavated , can't be that hard for a country that is boasting about building a 1mi tall skyscraper and a 100mi long 1000ft tall Line , or a floating NEOM city

The exception is that this project would actually have positive ROI .

I agree that the point of arrival of the pipelines would present a vulnerabily but look at the map , Jeddah is about 1000mi from Iran coast.

That buys you a lot of time and a lot of opportunities to intercept the drones

> > extended war of oil infrastructure destruction.

My point was that ingenuity could be used to avoid oil infrastructure destruction , which is not desirable anyways.

Your point is to get there via drone MAD. I don't think Saudi and Iran can be trusted with MAD

JumpinJack_Cash··on Ships keep moving through Hormuz despite strike
It's about time to have a serious talk with the Saudis and redirect all that money that is being stupidly spent on all those vanity projects such as NEOM and The Line towards pipelines running through the Desert , end point the port of Yunbu & Jeddah and make the Strait of Hormuz irrelevant .

This is the quintessential American project, the U.S. has invented and developed the oil industry in Saudi. Saudi Aramco was originally the "California-Arabian Standard Oil Company".

I don't know why this hasn't happened during the last 40 years where Iran has always been an enemy, Saudi Arabia has always been an ally and the U.S. has always had enormous amount of access to the Kingdom for the purpose of building oil infrastructure.

JumpinJack_Cash··on The case for physical media ownership
That's true but not instantaneously , but I get your point.

Gasoline, diesel, bullets, firearms, explosives, water, canned food, lubricants, soil, seeds are the only thing that are truly yours and cannot be taken from you or diluted into irrelevance

JumpinJack_Cash··on The case for physical media ownership
The sad thing is that it's also true for money.

Cash that you can hold in your hand it's yours, whereas the cash that you own at the bank is a IOU subject to the contract that you sign .

JumpinJack_Cash··on Looking for a partner from US/Canada/EU – part-time work
Bro but what do you mean when you say your partner must focus on interviews and communications?

Applying for developers roles means that interviews are things that you have to do, especially the first one that is decisive to get the job as well as meetings to discuss stuff with Teams etc.

I think you'd be better served with a personal assistant ,no ?

JumpinJack_Cash··on What are peoples' biggest issues with Crypto?
It's June almost July and people don't want to have an active portfolio with potentially wild swings 24/7 overe the holidays
JumpinJack_Cash··on Bill Gates on Steve Jobs
We are consumers, we don't give a damn about research.

The company which signs off the global adoption gets all the marbles

it's the doctrine and it's accepted by everybody in the history of American industry excet for Microsoft that somehow cheated its way there or it doesn't count because Steve Jobs says so or Xerox says so , it's ridiculous honestly.

Revisionism at its best

JumpinJack_Cash··on Bill Gates on Steve Jobs
Windows 95 has changed everything and it was a Microsoft product, not Apple's.

He said, she said about stealing ideas etc I don't care about it.

The first rule in this game that forcefully push into 14 year old wanna be entrepreneurs is that ideas aren't worth anything.

JumpinJack_Cash··on The Myth of SpaceX
> > Musk revolutionized rocket travel

revolutionized Rocket travel? How many millions are flying from Europe to the US and viceversa via rockets?

100 millions? 500 millions per year?

Tell me where can I board, I feel like I am missing out :( watching the World Cup from afar, could use a rocket for when the elimination phase begins

> > The valuation is the potential based on what SpaceX could do as the 1st mover in space tech.

Space is a waste of time, there is nobody to enslave out there, at least not within rockets reach, hence it will never have a positive ROI.

Unlike ICBM and nuclear triad which are a good reason to explain America's disproportional consumption compared with the rest of the world , but they work just fine and they don't need to be reusable because 4000 nukes are way overkill anyways.

JumpinJack_Cash··on Bill Gates on Steve Jobs
And yet the unimaginative had to bail out the design genius and best salesperson on the planet.

Plus I really don't think the whole Design thing was ever true to begin with tbh.

Apple has never beat Microsoft in a clear head 2 head design battle , Microsoft was either not interested in what Apple was doing or had to simply ignore it in order to avoid being broken up by the Government.

On the other hand Microsoft mopped the floor with Apple on the GUI design battlefield

JumpinJack_Cash··on Ask HN: Are people optimistic about the future?
Happiness is due to sudden improvement AKA going from 0 to 1 in a relatively short time.

If I were to make a comparison happiness is the sub 3 seconds 0-100 that you can achieve with your sportscar, or skydiving.

WHat you are referring to is the Concorde flying at 80000ft at mach 2.12

That's impressive but won't bring about the same limbic happiness and excitement as the aforementioned experiences.

And actually it's how evolution brings about improvement, everybody is trying to improve and collectively as humanity incredible progress happens over time but no individual can take joy or credit from it and thus everybody has to keep pushing to bring about personal improvement that would bring happiness that in turn on a large scale would produce large improvement at the societal level

JumpinJack_Cash··on Iran requires insurance on ships using Strait of Hormuz, fees likely to follow
Well, you know, as crude as it may sound, new war everybody starts from 0 with their prediction score
JumpinJack_Cash··on Iran requires insurance on ships using Strait of Hormuz, fees likely to follow
> > Why even have this military if anything that affects the market makes the US cower in fear?

First of all the chain of those cowering in fear begins with the the actors around ship transit , meaning the owners but also the seamen , they don't want to cross if there is a > 5% chance of being hit . And the seamen are actually being forced to accept such risk, they signed up for something else entirely, their risk preference would be around 0.0% because these days nobody dies at sea anymore.

Without Hormuz the world runs out of oil and that is a much bigger problem than just stock market going down

With the mines and drones and asymmetric warfare you'd need to conquer the entirety of Iran alley by alley and mountain by mountain to secure the strait for a risk tolerance in line with the aforementioned 5%

This war was lost when the U.S. wasn't ready to intervene during the week of popular uprise against the regime, had the intervention happened back then , maybe it could have been possible to overthrow the Ayatollah system and reinstall the Shah (who btw was no Saint either)

John Mearsheimer has called this right from the first day, he said that Iran 'holds all the cards' and he's been right on everything down to a T (no pun intended) [0]

It has been an acrobatic adventure in the Middle East with lots of expenses and very little human losses to follow the 'Greater Israel' ambition of Israel and Bibi. But we must not forget that we killed their Supreme Leader and Religious Leader all wrapped in one , they will not let this slide and with the asymmetric war and warfare this Administration has exposed itself to potentially another 9/11 that would at that point force a ground war with lots of victims.

JumpinJack_Cash··on New Air Force One
Still the proper new AF1 is going to have the same color scheme of the one in the pic .

And only a person without a sense of aesthetics would revert it to the old color scheme, much like only a person without a sense of aestetics would demolish the new D.C. arch or the new ballroom solely because it was installed by Trump.

He has a nice taste for construction,

JumpinJack_Cash··on New Air Force One
This color scheme is much more beautiful and powerful compared to the old one.

Don't even know how they greenlighted that color scheme back in the 60s. That shade of light blue is nowhere to be found in the American Flag

JumpinJack_Cash··on Barack Obama has built a monument to himself
That's the ugliest building I have ever seen , possibly in cohabitation with the windowless concrete building in Manhattan.

The current occupant of the White House has a much better taste with his preference for Roman/Greek classical architecture with columns and some gold spark here and there

JumpinJack_Cash··on Ask HN: Do we even need code anymore?
The real important stuff happens in person , that's how you solidify relationships and commitment to each other , AI and tech will never substitute that, you either can speak Spanish when you head to Mexico City to close a deal or not
JumpinJack_Cash··on Europe Scales Down AI Ambitions with Smaller Data Center Tender
Typical of treehuggers, they are still behind in 2021 with the green new deal
JumpinJack_Cash··on Ask HN: Do we even need code anymore?
All the people who choose a foreign language over coding are being vindicated.

AI and tech will never be able to make that look not uncanny in a business or social interaction, whereas it is making a non 10x coder redundant as we speak.

JumpinJack_Cash··on Sam Bankman-Fried loses bid to appeal against fraud conviction in FTX case
This is how people who get to the top act, the ones you see at the top are the ones who correctly guessed the roulette number .

If you want to become successful sooner or later you'd have to do the same .

As I realized this I am slowly but steadily abandoning the race for money and I am trying to approach it by finding the best deals for the stuff that I like as money saved is money earned and there is very little difference between experiencing a top 85 percentile thing and a top 99.999 percentile thing , but that last 15% man that is what the money exonential really goes crazy

JumpinJack_Cash··on Why SpaceX 2040 Revenue FCST $4.3T in highly unlikely
Those things were highly unlikely because they accounted for rationality from the consumer's end as well as the political's end and of course Fed and regulators

All 3 went out of the window sometimes around 2015 or so.

JumpinJack_Cash··on Ask HN: Are orbital data centers possible / a good idea?
Companies have become so big that an announcement of the CEO of a top 25 capitalization company equates to the one of the G20 countries bar a couple

Hence they should be treated with the same level of skepticism of a politician making a false promise just to get elected, actually more skepticism because the vaporware announcement starts making money from the CEO/Founder the second after they make it

JumpinJack_Cash··on Ask HN: What was the best decision you made in your career?
Never learned how to code. Those who did were always the subordinates, not-getting-laid, not deciding factors etc. within the companies that I observed through indipendent discovery and of course during the various organized visits to companies that we did during college.

Now with vibe-coding my choice has been vindicated.

On the other hand I have Spanish, Italian and a bit of Portuguese under my belt and contrary to coding no matter how much technology and AI advances... real time translators that will be developed will always look uncanny in the eyes of an other human.
