Juliate··on CEO of Mistral: AI is software. It can be controlled
> ...se that AI can easily become uncontrollable in the near future

Some virus and bacteria also easily become uncontrollable under the right conditions: that's why there are P3 and P4 bio-safety labs.

That's not the point. The point is, regulation is required, and is coming.

The people in charge of these machines (that built them, release them in the wild or give them access to the general public or resources), these people are and will be held responsible.

I agree also that HN shouldn't be a forum for political discussions, but I think that the political nature of technology, and the political nature of the decisions/choices made by the companies driving technology, should not be avoided/silenced.

I do remember of slightly better times, but the governments were also of a quite different substance.

It's funny and maybe it's my European-bias, because I'd label myself rather a progressive (coming from a very, very conservative background). But I don't perceive the HN vibe to be progressive at all, neither conservative. It's of a different kind.

Everyone can have many explanations that make sense in their perspective. That doesn't make those explanations right per se.

Crediting someone's gesture of being only an inappropriate, forgivable mistake, or misinterpreted gesture is skipping conveniently his discourse (and actions) towards far-right groups, and the impact his discourse has on these groups (if only in Europe, where I can witness it). It didn't happen in a vacuum.

Someone with such wealth, power and extent cannot have the excuse of the doubt: they are waaaay over-equipped to know better.

Hmmm, it's a genuine, not provocative, question: as an outsider from the US, I genuinely can't say what the USA (as a state, as a government) have done in the past few years, that is unequivocally worth of praise?
Juliate··on Why is Hacker News like that?
It's a promotion platform for a specific way of conducting business, and for the liberation of these businesses from democratic oversight (if not the other way around). And in that perspective, that's politics.

> Other countries do not get the same treatment in the same volume. The US is a punching bag here. It's tiresome.

Maybe the volume is proportional to the impact each country has globally? (especially these years)

"technically".
Juliate··on There Is No AI (It's Just People) with Jaron Lanier
The thing is that you are assigning intent ("realizes", "its goal", "tried to trick", etc.) where it is at most mechanical and consequential. A factory robot has no intent, it has a program and a purpose, all designed by someone very human.
Juliate··on There Is No AI (It's Just People) with Jaron Lanier
I am indeed (and so are you) as autonomous as long as society keeps functioning. Our chances of survival without society are... not great.

And as you speak of fire: as a technology, it's been used (for good and bad uses) by humans long before they understood how it does work.

It never absolved the arsonists. Those today that say that AGI is inevitable, and that push through this kind of AI, _are_ the arsonists.

Juliate··on There Is No AI (It's Just People) with Jaron Lanier
AI is as autonomous as a dishwasher: someone’s in charge of keeping the power plug in, and of maintaining it.
Juliate··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
Reading/assigning intent to agents, where it is merely mechanical (or structural) sounds a bit dismissive of the responsibility of the builders of these tools/agents.

« Raising the bar » makes literally no sense, but only if you consider a tiny segment of activities within the arts that’s about consumption, promotion and purchase.
Juliate··on How Climate Resilient Are the Largest Cities?
2026 Summer in Europe signals something like the past centuries are not really representatives of the challenges we face to be able to sustain agriculture as we did before.

Between fruits and vegetables that literally dried up to the Sun (with a unusually hot and dry Spring season), critical drinking water availability and drying up rivers, the coming year is going to be interesting to track.

Juliate··on How Climate Resilient Are the Largest Cities?
Cities being resilient is one thing. It won't contribute to make agriculture resilient.

Juliate··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
For a very specific frame of time, and a very specific definition of "return".

Looking back at history, most, if not all marvels of the world have been built without a ROI lens.

Juliate··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
If you only see life throuh a ROI lens…
Juliate··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
That’s not aspirational, that’s their very original purpose, which lands in their name.

> then there aren't enough jobs in any market for the students on their courses.

That has always been the case, because the purpose of universities is not feeding the market with workers or founders, it's feeding society with educated people. Which is incidentally an excellent basis for both founder and worker roles.

Juliate··on You need a webring
Back in the days, the webring idea wasn’t driven by popularity groups and metrics but by affinity, from the perspective of authors.

A ring was thematic, friends, interest.

Juliate··on We Don't Have to Be This Bad at Improving Society
Why should any be exclusive of the other?

My take is that it is kind of exclusive today, because the economy is designed and limited against the ecology, but that's not a fundamental given. It comes down from the choice of humanity to extract itself from nature. That's a choice and a story we can identify, criticise, and counter with another choice. Which would take some time, but... that's all we have.

Juliate··on Specs by Snapchat
What is it actually? Is it giving status, or taste? Is it private or is it spying? Is it giving help in everyday life, that no other existing experience can replace? Is it a platform for developers to find a killer app?

At this price level?

This looks so much like an undecided mix of: 1/ a solution looking for a problem to solve, 2/ glasses that don't know how to brand for fashion, 3/ a preview platform.

Juliate··on Lore – Open source version control system designed for scalability
I understand the website doesn't address users first, but it really feels like a missed opportunity to show a typical, simple use case in the front page (as in, "as a user, what's in it for me?").

A quickstart link is buried in there, and that's good, but the value of the product is multi-faceted and doesn't address data architecture only.

Juliate··on Are We Idiocracy Yet?
Evil has a motive (defensive or offensive).

Stupidity has none.

You can derail stupid towards something. Even de-stupid it. That does not work with motivated people, even less evil ones.

Juliate··on Are We Idiocracy Yet?
Because he was stupid, and not evil.
