JuDue··on Fitting the Facts to the Narrative
I think you are overlooking the fact he is focusing on the built up "expectation".

It's perfectly obvious the media (social and news) went OTT with this story, but the follow up reality check fell flat.

That's his angle.

JuDue··on Android Fragmentation Visualized
1. By all reports Google is shying away from Android.

2. Apple losing market share to hoards of cheap spam-ware phones? I'm sure Google isn't as excited about this as you think.

JuDue··on Apple’s Developer Center Is Back After Over a Week Offline
You could always move to Windows 8.1

I'm grateful they took security so seriously.

JuDue··on GorillaScript
Yes I'd like to know too. As the top post mentions, the documentation really needs to hightlight the benefits over established popular libraries.
JuDue··on Learn How to Install a WordPress Theme Easily
Not sure how a basic tutorial makes it to the homepage?
JuDue··on Adam Wiggins Leaving Heroku
Nice post, thanks.
JuDue··on The New Google Maps
I wish http://www.mapbox.com/ was a little cheaper so it could be a viable alternative for smaller startups.

Love Google Maps. Hate that they dominate this important space so heavily.

JuDue··on Apple Shuts Down Push Notifications From AppGratis
Gaming the ranking system.

That's Apples #1 concern.

Don't panic over the other issues listed.

For example, AppGratis tried to rally developer sympathy by claiming this rule was being used : "Apps that are not very useful, unique, are simply web sites bundled as Apps, or do not provide any lasting entertainment value may be rejected."

And while that rule is ridiculous and too generic, it wasn't what caught Apple's attention.

Gaming the ranking is what concerns Apple.

JuDue··on What happens when you give 4chan images of the Boston Marathon?
Is the guy in the brown top meant to be walking away WITHOUT a backpack?

Because I can't see either way. He looks like me MIGHT still have a backpack on.

Also the backpack seems small based on what's meant to be in it?

JuDue··on Your First iOS App – 100% Programmatically
Wonderful, I'll be checking this blog regularly.
JuDue··on Heroku Postgres Official Maintenance
Hey, reviews and anecdotes save time. Everyone does it.
JuDue··on Heroku Postgres Official Maintenance
Just as an aside, how good is Heroku's Postgres performance, speed wise?
JuDue··on Why I hate Rails
"Why I hate earning a living" ... because they expect me to work!

"Why I hate doing a marathon" ... because I have to run!

"Why I hate eating food" ... because I have to cook!

Seriously, this guy should find something better to do with his time. If he could be bothered.

JuDue··on How Samsung is out-innovating Apple
Which is nothing compared to Samsung.
JuDue··on Ruby on Rails 4.0.0.beta1 released
Sorry for the naive question... But does this help Heroku's woes?
JuDue··on Ruby on Rails 4.0.0.beta1 released
Turbo links is more suited to traditional web pages.

Backbone for single page mini-apps.

JuDue··on The MS Surface Pro
Yes.

And this refers to the interface.

In the past there were touch interfaces that were fiddly and required a pen to interact.

Jobs believed that was a poor interface.

For example, the new Office 365 for Windows still has loads of awkwardly sized buttons and drop downs, making it difficult to use via touch.

Some reviews have pondered how seriously MS is taking touch interfaces. But maybe this is why the Surface Pro comes with a stylus...

JuDue··on CoffeeScript in Firefox console with DOM support
I like Javascript. It took me some time to fully understand it, but it is rewarding.

Coffeescript feels to me like the icing on the cake for anyone who understands what the resulting JS will function like.

JuDue··on Google Glass - If I Had Glass
Agreed.

You only need to look at Google Play's lack of privacy to realise they see the user as a consuming resource.

At least Apple treats you more like the owner of your purchase, rather than something to drive ads with data.

JuDue··on How Samsung is out-innovating Apple
Apple has been quiet.

Mini-fying devices doesn't quite cut it as innovation. Although Apple is doing it exceptionally well.

But just because they aren't releasing anything monthly, and in 10 different form factors, does not mean they aren't developing stuff to be released when they think it is ready.

Most companies pump stuff out and let the consumer decide. Rather than building one perfect phone, they release 20 and call it innovation.

Apple never works that way.

JuDue··on Automated D3 maps of any country of the world

JuDue··on Dropzone.js - JS library for drag-and-drop file uploads with image previews
Wish people would stop depending on jQuery.

Old browsers can default to a normal form input.

JuDue··on So what happened to the HN server?
Fast is one thing.

BUT I'd much rather get rid of the "this link has expired" syndrome.

Fast is only impressive if the results are modern.

JuDue··on Ask HN: How could Rails4 help Heroku?
Except this doesn't help a large (compared to erlang) real world user base of Ruby and Rails.
JuDue··on Heroku's Ugly Secret: The story of how the cloud-king turned its back on Rails
And example of what is confusing...

$69 to reserve an instance for a year.

But that is for "light utilization"?!

What does it mean to reserve and instance, but to commit to light usage?

And if you are expecting heavy usage, the price goes up to $195.

But how can you buy an instance for a year but also commit to your usage level? If it's my instance, why is my utilization anyones business?

JuDue··on Heroku's Ugly Secret: The story of how the cloud-king turned its back on Rails
For example, a small instance is $69/yr for 1.7GB of memory, with additional hourly costs that are quite low

This is very economical compared to Heroku, and most startups can survive on that initially if they cache properly.

But if there is any level of success, how hard is it to scale compared to the extra cost of Heroku?

I'm not convinced it's THAT hard, but would love to see more blog posts about Beanstalk. The AWS doco feels quite mechanical.

JuDue··on Heroku's Ugly Secret: The story of how the cloud-king turned its back on Rails
I'd love to see some better tutorials on how to use AWS Beanstalk to scale Rails apps.

There is this one, but it doesn't give me a sense of the scalability or management http://docs.aws.amazon.com/elasticbeanstalk/latest/dg/create...

Any recommendations for good tutorials?

JuDue··on Surface Pro versus MacBook Air: Who's being dishonest with storage space?
Everything comes back to Balmer's disdain for the iPad as being an overpriced netbook device that nobody will ever use.

MS is furiously trying to merge tablets into fully fledged PCs.

I can almost guarantee that by Windows 9 they will have some success with this, and hardware will get better and better.

But that's not to say the tablet space doesn't have enormous potential as reduced and simplified user experiences.

Microsoft is betting a lot of its chips on pushing full Windows onto smaller devices.

One key detail is that Office 365 seems to completely misjudge expectations of tablet computing.

JuDue··on Surface Pro: Hefty Tablet Is a Laptop Lightweight
This is indeed a very serious problem for Microsoft.

Because they are positioning this device as a laptop and a tablet.

To not want comparisons with the iPad completely misunderstands what people are expecting from a tablet.

Microsoft was very vocal about the iPad being an expensive and useless netbook. And that people don't really want a tablet experience, they want a fully fledged OS.

Time will tell.
