JosephRedfern··on Pyspread – Pythonic Spreadsheet
Interestingly, Giles Thomas (the guy behind Python Anywhere) originally developed a Pythonic Spreadsheet application, called Resolver One, and then iterated to a a web-based version, called Project Dirigible.

Python Anywhere eventually span out from Project Dirigible when they realised that it was mostly being used for "generic" Python development rather than being used as a spreadsheet. There's an interesting write-up on this evolution here: https://blog.pythonanywhere.com/197/, and a demo of Dirigible here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZoIp-5NaiQ.

Project dirigible ended up being open sourced here: https://github.com/pythonanywhere/dirigible-spreadsheet.

JosephRedfern··on Using ClickHouse to scale an events engine
Reading between the lines, given they're talking > 1 million rows per minute, I'd guess on the order of trillions of rows rather than billions (assuming they retain data for more than a couple of weeks)
JosephRedfern··on Show HN: ADS-B visualizer
Very pretty! As it happens, I too have started ingesting ADS-B Data into ClickHouse recently, but have nothing nearly as beautiful as this.

I'm hitting the airplanes.live API every 10 seconds using ClickHouse's URL table function and storing in a MergeTree: https://github.com/JosephRedfern/airhoover/blob/main/airhoov.... Would love to use refreshable materialised views for this, but at the moment there's no append functionality (refresh only), so have to use Python to to trigger the query.

There's an open instance here: https://airhoover.joesstuff.co.uk/play?user=default#U0VMRUNU.... Only 1.5 days or so of data, I truncated before setting up tiered storage (local disk + backblaze b2).

Cool being able to e.g. get a break-down of aircraft type by operator (https://airhoover.joesstuff.co.uk/play?user=default#U0VMRUNU...) or who (supposedly) flies their planes fastest (https://airhoover.joesstuff.co.uk/play?user=default#U0VMRUNU...)

JosephRedfern··on KraftCloud
Oddly enough, I was wondering if this project for some reason came from Unilever -- the logo is quite similar!
JosephRedfern··on Study puts fermented foods, not fire, as pivotal moment in human brain growth
This summary article may be biased, but note that the cited paper has been peer reviewed and was published in Nature: https://www.nature.com/articles/s42003-023-05517-3.
JosephRedfern··on Reverse engineering a car key fob signal
There's also a gnu-radio flow graph which serves a similar purpose: https://github.com/bastibl/gr-keyfob.

JosephRedfern··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
> Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.

Ouch -- were there any signs this was coming?

JosephRedfern··on Android App Devs now require 20 people to test before publishing to Play Store
It feels like an IAP would be more fitting than an entirely separate app, though -- it'd be a shame to require a new listing just to work around this filtering.

Maybe static analysis could determine whether the IAP unlocked a new feature/functionality or not, feeling into the labelling/filtering?

JosephRedfern··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
Most likely because she quote-tweeted a another tweet, originating from a private account.
JosephRedfern··on Build your own private WireGuard VPN with PiVPN
The article explicitly mentions this: "PiVPN, luckily, runs on any other Pi-like device, though, as long as it's running a Debian or Pi-OS-like distro. Something like a Libre Computer Le Potato should work in a pinch, without breaking the bank—though if you want faster networking, you'll have to pony up a little more cash, at least until the Pi shortage abates."
JosephRedfern··on Show HN: Remove sponsored content in YouTube videos
I personally wouldn't want to blanket-drop sponsored content from the videos I watch, but this seems really nicely put together, and a version which let me exclude "sketchier" sponsors but keep everything else (or perhaps lets me skip ones I've seen before) would be great.

This comment:

> Just look at the poor leftist Youtubers

felt a little out of place, though?

JosephRedfern··on Ask HN: Paychecks from a failed startup?
You can put whatever you like into ChatGPT and get _something_ out, but that doesn't mean it's accurate or good advice.

Even if what you're saying is true, the skill would be in knowing whether the response is good and proper or not, which requires subject matter expertise. You'd be a fool to blindly trust output from ChatGPT right now for anything important.

JosephRedfern··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2023)

JosephRedfern··on Making a Linux home server sleep on idle and wake on demand – the simple way
I'm not sure OP was necessarily implying that the Pi specifically wasn't suitable for the job -- perhaps just that requiring /any/ other additional computer to achieve this is not without additional administrative overhead and power costs.

It does seems likely that a Pi is going to consume a fair bit less energy than the x86 SFF PC, so it's probably a net gain there, but that admin overhead thing isn't necessarily one to ignore -- it's not entirely set and forget.

JosephRedfern··on 50% of new NPM packages are spam
I'm just clarifying my interpretation of OP's comment, not necessarily agreeing with it.

Anyway, involving humans (funded by NPM's commercial revenue) doesn't reduce the options to "letting the spam happen and dealing it after the fact" or "holding all submissions until a human reviews [them]".

If I was trying to solve this problem, I'd be open to a solution that tried to automatically classify submissions as either legitimate or spammy, with an associated confidence level. If the confidence level fell below a given threshold then I'd involve a human.

JosephRedfern··on 50% of new NPM packages are spam
I think the suggestion was that the revenue generated by NPM's commercial dealings should cover any cost associated with a review process for OSS submissions (which in itself would make such spam repositories ineffective)
JosephRedfern··on How secure is merely discarding (TRIMing) all of a SSD's blocks?
Not necessarily -- if the drive was found and decrypted after the exploit was leaked and made public (perhaps YEARS after it being a 0-day), it wouldn't necessarily be a skilled attack.

JosephRedfern··on Ask HN: Worth it to buy 4x Nvidia Tesla K40 for AI?
> For just 5x more cash

I don’t feel the words “just” and “5x more cash” really fit in the same sentence!

Not questioning 3090s being more performant, but that’s a whole lot more money before even thinking about buying the supporting components.

JosephRedfern··on Toshiba HD-DVD firmware archive
> .. and become the preferred information delivery mechanism for business and entertainment because the internet was "just a fad."

Was it not as much a case of network limitations making such delivery impractical, rather than the internet being considered a fad? I was just about on 512Kb DSL at that point (if not, dial up). Downloading games and streaming movies would have been totally impractical.

JosephRedfern··on Tell HN: Impact of using 1 or 2 sticks of DDR5 on a 6800HX with 680M IG
> Computer literacy is on its way down

Perhaps it depends on your definition of "Copmuter literacy", but do you have any evidence to back up that claim? I find it surprising.

JosephRedfern··on How to get a heart attack while using JEB decompiler (2022)
Seems pretty wild that JEB would _default_ to just turning the sandbox off when `SecurityManager` is missing.
JosephRedfern··on Show HN: boxxy – Control where Linux programs put files, without symlinks
I was wondering the same. So infuriatingly obnoxious!
JosephRedfern··on All Circuits are Busy Now: The 1990 AT&T Long Distance Network Collapse (1995)
> For example if they reported a bug and got a fix they diffed the binaries and looked at every difference to be sure that the change was a result of the fix, and nothing else (no, they didn’t want upgrades).

That sounds pretty diligent!

JosephRedfern··on Production Twitter on one machine? 100Gbps NICs and NVMe are fast
I suppose that in practice you'd need to consider burst bandwidth and not just 95/99 percentiles.
