Jordrok··on The case against masks at school
Two words: Stop Whining
Jordrok··on Yesterday the FBI signed its first public contract with Clearview AI
No, not really.
Jordrok··on Yesterday the FBI signed its first public contract with Clearview AI
I honestly have no idea how truthful any of this is. If experience has taught me anything, it's that conspiracy theories like this are largely bullshit. Thank you for at least providing me somewhere to start though.

> You remember the so called "Satanic Panic" in the late 80's? Did you know that documents were declassified last year proving that it wasn't a silly conservative overreaction to Iron Maiden, but something that was actually happening

Jordrok··on The Trump SPAC Pitch Is Weird
Does it? What other politician has made those same claims such a central part of their platform?
Jordrok··on Twitter suspends account tracking Maxwell trial
This would all be so much easier if Twitter and other social media companies were actually transparent and explicit about the specific reasons an account was banned. Instead, you are just generically told that you are in violation of the Terms of Service and MAYBE if you're lucky, linked to a certain section of the ToS which might theoretically be relevant to your case. The specific rule that was broken, and examples of behavior which broke that rule are never given.

Whatever the reasoning behind not going into more detail may be is irrelevant. The fact that none is given feeds directly into the narrative that Big Tech is unjustly censoring The Truth That They Don't Want You To Know and only exacerbates the current environment of distrust and disinformation. I feel like this is something that is going to have to change to have any hope of ever returning to some sort of consensus on what constitutes objective reality.

Jordrok··on The Polarization Spiral
> They don't care how many abortions people have in New York...

> every single leftist friend I have is absolutely committed to making sure girls in Alabama can also have abortions

I find it so curious how much you claim that people on the right just want to be left alone, and then bring up the issue of abortion as an example. If what you really wanted was for people to live and let live, then why would you care about women in Alabama having abortions? Don't they have just as much of a right to be "left alone"?

Jordrok··on Facebook Makes Us Know Too Much About Each Other
> How do you not see that your thinking is the problem?

I would ask you the same question. Are you so arrogant to assume that the only reason I haven't come around to your way of thinking is because I merely haven't seen the same information that you have? That the only reason why someone wouldn't be a conservative is because they've been brainwashed by the big bad mainstream media?

Every time I have tried to dive into the Conservative-leaning mediasphere to make sure that there isn't some hidden truth I've been missing, I come away more certain than ever that that is not the case. And believe me, I've tried. Why do you assume that I haven't, simply because I still disagree with you?

You are not entitled to having your political beliefs validated by everyone you meet.

Jordrok··on Facebook Makes Us Know Too Much About Each Other
> I would challenge you to find a single article reporting on any of Trump's speeches, actions, or policies in a positive light from any of the "centrist" outlets that you posted.

And why would they, when none of his speeches, actions, or policies ever accomplished anything positive for anyone other than his hardcore rightwing base? That's not bias, it's just calling a spade a spade.

Jordrok··on Apple's Power Move to Kneecap Facebook Advertising Is Working
I honestly cannot fathom this opinion. I literally cannot think of a single instance where I've ever seen an ad and thought "Yes, I'm glad that I'm seeing this instead of the content I came here for." If that's true, why bother even going on Instagram at all?

I'll admit that I don't use Pinterest, but from what I understand, it's main feature is being a place for user-curated image collections, yes? That's very different than algorithmically distributed, paid-for ads.

Jordrok··on Finger counting gives away your nationality
Maybe not, but this guy sure is: https://www.axios.com/christchuch-attacks-brenton-tarrant-15...

Obviously the twitter hive-mind went too far in singling this one guy out, and SDG&E colossally fucked up in not doing basic due diligence before firing him. That doesn't change the fact though that there are people out there who do indeed use the hand sign to unironically mean exactly the things that 4chan set out to convince people that it meant. Sticking your head in the sand and pretending otherwise is nothing short of willful ignorance.

Jordrok··on The US Intelligence Community’s Assessment on Covid-19 Origins [pdf]
Literally nothing in the quote posted by the OP, or the report in question claims "that COVID-19 is man made". In fact, it's doing the exact opposite. It's saying that it is impossible to know for certain how the initial human infection occurred without further information, but that most agencies agreed that the virus was not genetically engineered or developed as a weapon. Details matter.

Jordrok··on Canada's awful new proposals on “harmful” content
> In what country can you give away 40% of your paycheck making less than 6 figures to then pay for dental work, prescriptions and education out of pocket while needing to make 3x the average salary to afford an average house?

Yeah, I dunno... Maybe there's a little bit of the "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" effect going on here, but as an American, if I hadn't read the rest of your post, I would have sworn you were giving a brutally accurate description of the US in that last sentence.

Jordrok··on Beware of 'shrinkflation,' inflation's devious cousin
That one actually seems straight up manipulated rather than just deceptively presented to me. That guy's entire arm is somehow fitting inside of a machine which could barely fit his finger in actuality!
Jordrok··on The human ear detects half a millisecond delay in sound
To add on to what the other commenters have already said - this is especially true for marching bands where you are even further spread out and your distance to various sections changes over the course of the performance. You have to learn to (at least somewhat) disregard what your ears are telling you and focus solely on the drum majors for staying in time. Listening to the drumline to keep yourself on beat can be a very bad idea when they're half a football field away.

This effect is amplified even more for enclosed stadiums where there tends to be a large amount of echo, and can really be quite disorienting the first time you experience it.

Jordrok··on Copilot regurgitating Quake code, including sweary comments
Yeah. If only we could cure all those delusional righties fantisizing about being the protagonist in their own personal RPG.

Jordrok··on Twitter 'troll' to pay six-figure sum
Personally, I tend to just call those "fake" accounts. Fake, in the sense that the person behind that account is someone other than who they are claiming to be - whether that is a specific human being with a name and a picture, or just an anonymous, discrete individual who is distinct from anyone else already involved in the conversation.
Jordrok··on Facebook to end special treatment for politicians after Trump ban – report
Only if you live in that alternate reality where somehow conservatives are being singled out and censored purely for being conservative, which has always been an absurd bit of victomhood fanfiction.
Jordrok··on DOOM Captcha
I get your point - it was way too loud initially and would quickly get annoying after the second or third time if it was being used as an actual captcha.

That said, the music is what really sold it for me. How better to perfectly highlight the absurdity of proving your humanity by going on a virtual demon-slaying spree than dropping you right in the middle of a retro 90s metal cacophony!

Jordrok··on New Snap Spectacles Feature Augmented Reality Display
Exactly my experience as well. I had occasionally heard the term in passing, but it never was more than a minor blip on my radar until I was having a conversation with my outspoken conservative uncle who asked me if I was "woke". (This was years ago, I want to say around 2015 or so.)

I knew vaguely that it was connected to the idea of being aware of social justice issues, but it became clear that what he was really interested in was whether I held the same set of naive, self-righteous, straw-man ideals that are so regularly pilloried in conservative media and labeled as "woke" culture.

For a group that claims to hate identity politics, the right sure is quick to slap labels on everyone and put us against each other.

Jordrok··on NTSB: Tesla Model S in Crash Couldn't Have Been Using Autopilot
You do realize that it was the police who originally stated that there was no driver?
Jordrok··on Covid: US backs waiver on vaccine intellectual property
Nobody cares about your conservative victomhood complex. If your leaders aren't mature enough to do their job without throwing a temper tantrum whenever someone says something mean about them, then sit the fuck down and let the adults handle it.
Jordrok··on .org doesn't mean credible
Are you kidding me? Sure you can make it sound trivial if you give the weakest possible examples.

Let's talk about the border: Trump literally campaigned on the slogan "I'll build a wall and have Mexico pay for it." And what did he do in reality? When attempts to make Mexico pay for it failed miserably, as predicted by anyone with common sense, he begged and bullied congress (to the point of a government shutdown, no less) to put aside American taxpayer dollars for it. When that too failed, he attempted to pilfer money from various other government departments like homeland security and defense. By comparison, Biden has shut down construction and returned that money for its original uses. And I'm not even sure what you're talking about with that "open borders" nonsense. Nobody has ever actually advocated for that other than the bogeymen from the fevered nightmares of Fox News commentators. You're buying into your own propaganda.

As for North Korea, they were antagonized by Biden calling their nuclear program a "serious threat" to American and world security. What did Trump say again? Oh yeah, he called Kim Jong Un "Little Rocket Man" and said that North Korea "will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen". I consider us all lucky that so much of Trump's administration turned out to be all talk and no action.

And yes, Covid. How many hundreds of thousands of Americans are dead because he refused to acknowledge reality and continued to lie and undermine public caution towards the pandemic? What other moron could possibly turn something so simple, easy, and painless to do as wearing a mask in public into a full blown culture war? Now we have grown adults whining and crying like petulant toddlers when asked to put on a fucking mask.

Yes, now I'm starting to lose my temper and ramble, but fuck it. That's how angry I get when I see people try to minimize the monstrous idiocy of the Trump presidency as just being the big bad news media out to get poor Trump. I could go on and on like this, but instead maybe I'll just call him a fat, orange, tiny handed imbecile with the world's most absurd combover - not because I hate him for these things (honestly, I couldn't care less about his appearance) - but because it relieves a little bit of the anger caused by him constantly running the country into the ground while claiming that he's making it great.

Jordrok··on .org doesn't mean credible
You're right that media can be manipulative without explicitly lying, but let's be clear, Trump's actions alone were more than enough to make people hate him without any media manipulation whatsoever. All that hate was earned.
Jordrok··on Google have declared Droidscript is malware
I know this is standard practice for most big companies moderating lots of content, but it has always seemed like such an insane policy to me.

Imagine if this were applied to actual laws enforced by the police. "You're under arrest but we won't tell you what law you've broken, because then other criminals might use that knowledge of the law to avoid being arrested. And by the way, a secret court has sentenced you to life imprisonment and all of your appeals have been denied."

Jordrok··on Wisconsin has negotiated a dramatically scaled-back deal with Foxconn
This is such a lame excuse. In 2016 there were 16 other candidates in the primary, and 4 in 2020. Literally every single one of them would have been a better choice. If all else fails, you don't vote. Don't pretend like there weren't options.

Self-righteously holding your nose and voting for a dumpster fire is still voting for a dumpster fire.

Jordrok··on Texas police to demand Tesla crash data as Musk denies autopilot use
Even if he happens to be telling the truth here and they have pulled back some data which shows that Autopilot didn't play any role in the crash, this kind of low-info twitter trolling isn't a good look. By not specifying exactly what data they were able to recover (if any) and coordinating with the investigators, he's raising many more questions than he's answering.

It's a very Trumpian response to bad press that leaves a bad taste in my mouth, even in a situation where I'm inclined to believe that the initial reports are missing some key facts.

Jordrok··on Google misled consumers about the collection and use of location data
Yeah, I really hate that. One workaround is to temporarily turn on the setting, set your home and work locations, then immediately turn it back off again. It will keep the locations and allow you to use them, you just can't change them unless you turn the Web & App activity setting back on again.
