JordanFarmer··on The Value of Life
> The key question: how much money (or resources) should you, or we, be willing to pay to gain more life?

This whole article is based on a false premise. We can spend x dollars to stop this virus from getting to poor old grandma. We cannot stop this virus. Any vaccine will not help significantly either as it has mutated many times and will continue to do so. The shutdown and stay at home were only measures to slow infection rates, buying time to prepare hospital beds, tests, masks ETC.

This virus will continue to spread until 80% of the population has had it (herd immunity). The financial cost has been paid, we are re-opening and will not close again unless we overwhelm the measures that we have put in place. The second wave of the 1969 pandemic virus is still with us folks (it's one of the seasonal flu varieties). This one isn't going away save a miracle.

Pandemics are nothing new. We get through them and move on (sounds harsh but is the reality). We are a communal people. It isn't possible to "burn out" this particular virus. This article seems to think we somehow can buy our way out of it.

What you speak of has led to unrecoverable loss... The more mankind "knows", the more foolish we become.
JordanFarmer··on Oldest 'nearly complete' HIV genome found in forgotten tissue sample from 1966
Sorry... Trying to understand. Are you saying that all these little kids died of aids? How did they contract it? Most kids are 3 feet tall by age three or four. Also, why so many deaths in 2002? Very effective drugs had been widely available for a long time.
JordanFarmer··on Studies show Alzheimer’s occurs more often in people exposed to polluted air
Yet moderate smokers of 40+ years have no higher risk than non smokers... Strange (just ask my 96yo grandmother who smoked for 42yrs and is still sharp as a pin mentally)

There are a lot of other bad things that the people in Mexico city are exposed to. Why blame Alzheimer's on air pollution???

Oh, wait... thought Herpes got in the brain and caused it...

Scientists don't have a clue what really causes it (yet they have many clues). Probably 1,000 different things which affect 1,000 different people , well differently.

JordanFarmer··on Multifunctional Graphene Hair Dye (2018)
Sorry for pessimism, but I have been disappointment with nearly every other graphene miracle product so far. Waiting for this one to not pan out as well. Why doesn't Popular Science just do full graphene publications since I am always equally disappointment by how many amazing things in there never pan out.
JordanFarmer··on YouTube bans coronavirus-related content that directly contradicts WHO advice
Just look back through the years where the WHO has posted information and data that has been false. There were scientists and doctors who disagreed, those doctors were correct. So YouTube wouldn't allow correct information in this scenario for Covid 19?
JordanFarmer··on The Amish health care system
Why do I always see articles like this? I am pretty sure that everyone knows that Amish eat healthier, exercise more (very low obesity - the cause of 60% of Western health problems), don't drink or smoke, ingest and inhale far less plastics and chemicals and a large portion of their health care money isn't wasted on health care system overhead (administration). Oh one more thing, 80% of doctor visits and filled prescriptions today are completely unnecessary and unhelpful, also 20% of surgeries. The Amish only use health care or get surgeries or see a doctor when they really need too. Cut out the cost for that too.

It's funny how today's most complex problems are so simply avoided by simple people.

JordanFarmer··on The Perils of Private Provision of Public Goods
Everyone involved would have been better off if Starbucks just started a charity to help homeless people. Political correctness and feelings (vs logic and foresight) just cause more problems.

It's not about risk. It's about the type of place they want to spend time at or live in.

JordanFarmer··on California’s Assembly Bill 5 came for me today
The track record of the government saving people and fixing things is absolutely abysmal. It is literally insane (doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result). Why has the black poverty level been the same for 60 years? Do you know how many laws and programs the government has created to save them? The government doesn't do anything very well. There are always so many unintended consequences that need more laws and programs till there is so much red tape and taxes needed to pay for all the bureaucracy and programs. Government officials campaign on promises of half baked ideas. Then when they get elected, they do their job, making more and more laws and programs. Progressives are even realizing now that the government has created a welfare generation and are pushing to end it in favor of guaranteed basic income. Look at the insane amounts of money sunk into inner-city schools and do things ever improve? No.

The government is a failure for social programs and fixing problems citizens face. This is easily proven though statistics. How do we keep on going down this path? I'll never understand big government people...

JordanFarmer··on California’s Assembly Bill 5 came for me today
That is why contract positions have a far higher payout. I know many contractors who come out on top this way. Many have a spouse with a job that provides Insurance for the family. They pocket that extra. Others just enjoy the autonomy of the hours they work ETC. If restaurants are exploiting workers by calling them contractors, why do the workers stand for it? Go work somewhere else. Why does that restaurant have cooks on staff if they are indeed mistreating them? Are people so weak in this generation that they can't make things happen themselves and need the government to save them?

JordanFarmer··on Google Gives Feds 1,500 Phone Locations in Unprecedented ‘Geofence’ Search
If this becomes more common, won't criminals just turn their phones off or leave them home as an alibi? The practice is a dead end. Using this for such a thing as fire vandalism and two dead dogs is a real waste here (I realize that sounds heartless). How about tracking terror suspects? Law enforcement is showing their hand here.
JordanFarmer··on A Week in the Life of a McDonald’s Cashier
hard work = prosperity, I don't think I have ever seen or heard that without further advice or instruction. Hard work is only one component toward advancement. You have to have a plan to advance and make good choices as well.
JordanFarmer··on Flash Is Responsible for the Internet's Most Creative Era
Flash died because Steve Jobs knew that it would cost Apple much money since the to grossing App Store items have always been games and Flash was what most of the web based games were programmed in. He couldn't cash in on that market plus it was a direct competitor. He had the leverage and opportunity to do so... so he defamed and killed it. Jobs was all about innovation... as long as it was coming out of Apple.
JordanFarmer··on What’s it like to live on less than $2 a day?
Interesting that Bill points out in particular the poverty and hardships of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Interesting because it once had 3000 medical facilities and over 300 hospitals. Something like 80% literacy rate and 60%+ school aged kids attending school. The largest middle class in all of Africa, slavery was illegal (though that doesn't mean it didn't happen). This was of course when it was a Belgium colony. There were 80,000 Belgians living there. There was a massive infrastructure of trains and roads. Many diseases that kill tens of thousands now had been nearly eradicated through vaccinations.

Quite a far cry of how life is there now... Belgium was going to transition away and give the Congo it's independence, but the Congolese people had no patience for that and began getting violent. This led to a premature departure with a weak and new Congolese government. What followed was civil war and complete destruction of all infrastructure and means of living free of poverty... A sad story for sure. You can't blame the Congolese people for wanting their independence and certainly the Belgian people didn't treat them as equals (segregation wasn't the law, but it was a common social practice). I sure wish things could have worked out better. Though the Congolese people didn't have autonomy, quality of life was far better.
