JohnnyBrown··on The White House's Response to SOPA
Sure it does. Womens suffrage didnt repeal any laws, remove ant government powers, or destroy any beauracracies. Try repealing the 19th amendment and see how far you get.
JohnnyBrown··on Good bye, Google Maps… thanks for all the fish
I've never developed for iOS, but on my iPhone when I go to okcupid.com it somehow 'redirects' to the okcupid app on my phone. So it seems there is some capability for this built in that website developers can take advantage of.
JohnnyBrown··on Why I Won't Hire You
Include only the 3 or 4 most relevant jobs/items. This way you have all the space you need to explain what you got out of them
JohnnyBrown··on Breakthrough could double solar energy output
They described the plastic as 'organic', hopefully this means it comes from somewhere other than from petroleum - does anyone know enough to comment?

If it means organic as in 'carbon-based compound' then it's just redundant.

JohnnyBrown··on Superstitious users and the FreeBSD logo
thanks
JohnnyBrown··on Superstitious users and the FreeBSD logo
I don't understand what he's asking for at then end:

| Is there artwork that doesn't include horned creatures that might offend the ignorant or superstitious?

as in, I still want to offend her, but also want to change the logo?

JohnnyBrown··on Open-source skills best hope for landing a good job
The second-last paragraph makes a point I've seen touched on a few times but never fully developed: That the labor of software developers is an economic complement to code. When developers write code and release it for free, we are commoditizing our complements [1]. Operating systems, libraries, frameworks and the like increase the productivity of developers, so by making those widely available, the demand for developers is increased.

Calling open source a "labor movement" as the OP mentions is not far off, considering its effects on control of the means of production.

JohnnyBrown··on Don't Be So F*cking Strategic
Personally, I find the nipple thing pretty inane as well. I have no idea how anyone benefits from covering them up, especially when it gets to a point where the nipple is the only part of the breast covered.
JohnnyBrown··on Spin.js, a pure JS spinner
Not realizing what was meant by "spinner", I spent a few seconds waiting for the cool javascript demo to load before I realized.
JohnnyBrown··on Two special startup types: the Twitter and the Hoverboard
This is a neat, memorable way of explaining what Steve Blank calls [Customer/Market Risk versus Invention Risk](http://steveblank.com/2009/05/28/vertical-markets-2-customer...)
JohnnyBrown··on How to Expose Yourself to Randomness
I love the idea that we shouldn't inhibit ourselves or get stuck in ruts. But I felt like many of the items on this lit boiled down to 'Consume. But consume something novel and tell yourself it's somehow virtuous'
JohnnyBrown··on Show HN: A Bitcoin casino with 23 games.
Ya that and the security challenges were what impressed me when I saw this. Best of luck
JohnnyBrown··on Aaronsw indicted for hacking MIT network to download millions of JSTOR docs
Wouldn't any code of ethics endorsed by Harvard view hacking MIT as a virtuous act?
JohnnyBrown··on Show HN: A Bitcoin casino with 23 games.
Out of curiosity, where do you live/host? I've been thinking about creating a bitcoin poker game but it would probably be foolish from the US
JohnnyBrown··on Ask HN: Can I help you be more awesome today? (No strings. Inquire within.)
By SoFL I assume you mean South Florida?

Can you comment on the startup scene/general market for developers there? I grew up in West Palm and would like to try living there again.

JohnnyBrown··on Why scientific programming does not compute
I'm working in biology now, and a good example of researchers who produce quality, documented code that other people find useful is the Knight group at UC Boulder. They write python with good docs and support, publish the algorithms they come up with in bioinformatics journals, and people cite them all the time.

Might be worth thinking about why there are incentives there and not elsewhere.

JohnnyBrown··on Photography Is "Copying;" More Fallout from Maisel vs. Baio
The Moe's burritos in Tallahassee has a series of photos on the wall that appear to be famous photos of musicians (eg. John Lennon, Slash, Bob Marley), but if you look closely it's a lookalike and there's a small caption beneath that says something like "Bob Smith, from Denver".
JohnnyBrown··on Today's real life is yesterday's science fiction.
I hate how HN is turning into Reddit.
JohnnyBrown··on Myths About Introverts
O language, how poorly suited you are to describing the multidimensional space that holds all possible personalities
JohnnyBrown··on Show HN: HN Trends - like Google Trends, but for Hacker News
Idle speculation: Wouldn't it be cool if we plotted a user's total karma next to the trend of their name and it turned out to look like an integral?
JohnnyBrown··on 1 in 6 Russian entrepreneurs are in jail, 1 in 3 prisoners are businessmen
90% certain those are metaphorical bananas.
JohnnyBrown··on We have seen this movie before
You are correct that the trainer is incentivized such that he would prefer I not show up. But /I/ am incentivized /to/ show up.
JohnnyBrown··on Hacker Writing Style
> It may well be that future historians of literature will see in it a revival of the great tradition of personal letters as art.

Ah what might have been ...

JohnnyBrown··on Google Chrome Hacked?
A security bug in a web browser on windows may not happen everyday, but I've heard more extraordinary things.
JohnnyBrown··on Women, Income, and The Sexual Paradox: Explaining America's Gender Gap
I came here with that exact quote in my clipboard. Also entertaining is the hand-wringing and explaining that goes on whenever someone notices that education doesn't perfectly predict income.
JohnnyBrown··on How not to protect against SQL injection (view source)
Well, it's still up after 8 hours, so apparently there was some server-side checking as well
JohnnyBrown··on Coasting in Neutral Does Not Save Gas
I think this idea comes from when most vehicles had carburetors rather than fuel injectors. If fuel consumption were driven by airflow into the engine rather than electronically controlled, I imagine there would be some benefit to coasting in neutral.
JohnnyBrown··on Germany shuts down seven reactors‎ because of Fokushima
Why would this standard be applied only to nuclear power? Would you say the same about aviation, oil production, dams, or any other highly useful but occasionally dangerous technology?
JohnnyBrown··on Steve Jobs' reality distortion takes its toll on truth
>brand advocates

i.e. Everyone on this thread

JohnnyBrown··on Show HN: What Do You Think Of My Resume?
In fact, he already has. His resume is on the front page of Hacker News
