JohnTHaller··on Celebrating the 100th birthday of the kidney donated to him as a teenager
Kidney transplantation is major surgery with decent risks. Donation carries a certain level of risk as well but less than being a recipient. When I donated, the chance of dying was about 1 in 4,000.

Since I donated, my remaining kidney has grown larger and taken over a chunk of the function of my missing kidney. If possible, getting it back would only give me a relatively small benefit compared to the risk of the surgery. First, I'd have a spare again for major injuries meaning I'd be 'allowed' to do things like contact sports and such. It's recommended you don't do things that could result in an impact to your kidney when you don't have a spare. I did violate this once by going skydiving, though.

Second, I'd be able to take anti-inflammatory meds without restrictions. That is an annoying one as when I injured my rotator cuff years ago, the normal recommendation was a month of high-dose anti-inflammatory meds. Since I couldn't do that, I had to do physical therapy and injected steroids which was much more involved and more expensive.

Note that a transplanted kidney can be re-transplanted depending on the health of the recipient when they die. It's not as common but it has been more in recent years. It's often referred to as "regifting".

JohnTHaller··on Celebrating the 100th birthday of the kidney donated to him as a teenager
I donated a kidney to my Dad in 2000. It gave him an extra 23 years with us. He was on very low doses of his anti-rejection meds, partially due to us being a 4 out of 6 HLA type match, so the doctors were hopeful it would last him the rest of his life. It would have lasted far longer if ALS hadn't shown up.

JohnTHaller··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
The fact that you and the industry try to call it "gaming" is still such a scummy thing. It's gambling. Call it what it is.
JohnTHaller··on Leaving DigitalOcean, one site at a time
For the unfamiliar on the background, DigitalOcean pledged $3 million to the Omacom Foundation aka the Omarchy Linux distribution. It's an AI-built distro led by David Heinemeier Hansson aka DHH. The idea being that AI can build it and run it and create all the apps it is missing like Photoshop. And that things like codes of conduct are to be shunned. Toxic behavior is welcomed as long as your code is good. It's been derisively referred to as "DOGE Linux".

Much of its popularity is apparently via certain YouTube influencers in sponsored videos that often hide their sponsorship or affiliation with Omarchy. It's gained quite a following in the "man-o-sphere".

Omarchy was formed as a culture war weapon/counterpoint against other Linux distros with codes of conduct. DHH believes such codes are used by clowns and that prohibiting racism, sexism, homophobia, etc is stupid.

DHH has some interesting views on "gypsies": https://world.hey.com/dhh/wolves-sheep-and-gypsies-ba44af6a

And "retarded" immigration policies: https://world.hey.com/dhh/three-sacred-cows-that-must-die-so...

From a technical perspective, it's been referred to as an opinionated theming layer on top of Arch Linux or a vibe coded dotfiles project as it is mostly Arch Linux with AI code atop.

From a financial perspective, DigitalOcean recently pulled funding for multiple open source projects like GNOME before this $3 million investment in Omarchy.

JohnTHaller··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
It's relevant to know when the source of information is biased due to a conflict of interest. The source's business is apparently scraping Google (and Bing, etc).
JohnTHaller··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
Note: Article published by Autom.dev which, from a quick read of their homepage, seems like it scrapes Google search results in violation of Google's terms of service and sells those results to customers via an API. That's just my quick read of it, though, so this could be wrong.

JohnTHaller··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
I use this for everything except where I write the month out or use an abbreviation. Much easier.
JohnTHaller··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
It has no AI built in, which is a feature to a growing set of users. No AI buttons all over the place and sending your personal data off to who knows where. And if you want AI, you can add your choice of AI via plugins if you want AI in your word processor.
JohnTHaller··on LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
We knew they were reporting back our watching habits of the built-in stuff. Then we learned they were doing video capture on HDMI ports to report back on what we watched on external sources (Xbox, Apple TV, etc). Then we learned that they did botnet-like stuff in the background even when they were switched off.

NOW we're learning that they're spying with their internal microphone when switched off.

JohnTHaller··on US refuses payout for soldiers who died in Iran 'because it isn't a war'
Essentially: US Dept of War refuses to pay out war benefits to US soldiers killed in the Iran war because it isn't a war.
JohnTHaller··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
You said:

> Why didn’t the other parties do anything or immediately declare war on Russia besides just the United States?

I pointed out the fallacy of your statement. The US didn't declare war on Russia. And the fact that the EU isn't a party to the Budapest Memorandum, so they're not supposed to be defending Ukraine from Russia.

Now, you're saying that the we should ignore the Budapest Memorandum and negotiate in good faith with a tyrant like Putin that never negotiates in good faith. And violates agreements without thinking twice. And that somehow sending a fraudulent "negotiator" like Kushner is somehow a good thing and the US acting in good faith.

Also:

> I can't say anything other than what is officially reported. Everything else is a conspiracy theory.

The actual reporting by multiple news organizations contains far more factual details than anything 'officially' released by a convicted fraud and adjudicated rapist. Or his sycophants.

JohnTHaller··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Can you honestly say with a straight face that you believe Jared Kushner is in Moscow negotiating in good faith with Putin with respect to Ukraine? Especially given his lack of experience and multiple corruption accusations and investigations. And that Trump has illegally withheld Ukrainian assistance in the past and stopped it in the future.

Given that Trump's "peace plan" is essentially for Ukraine to give up even more territory and partially disarm - decreasing the size of their military and giving up long-range weapons... and there's no such provisions for Russia to do anything of the sort. The plan all but sets up Russia's next invasion of a weakened Ukraine.

The US didn't declare war on Russia. The EU isn't a party to the Budapest Memorandum. Ukraine, US, UK, and Russia are with China and France giving separate assurances.

JohnTHaller··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
This is Russia's second violation of the Budapest Memorandum. We know Putin will simply ignore another treaty when he feels like. We also know the US under the current administration is "negotiating" in bad faith (via the president's son-in-law) and will do even less when the next treaty violation occurs.
JohnTHaller··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Russia's word has been ironclad each time it's been given to Ukraine previously. It surely would be the same this time.
JohnTHaller··on Christmas Village shoppers no longer will be allowed to enter booths
Reminds me of all the smaller/local newspapers and stations in the US that geo-block the EU from their content because complying with the GDPR - and paying the appropriate folks to ensure you are in compliance - simply made no business sense.

JohnTHaller··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
There's nobody left at the DoJ in a high enough position to do anything like this. I'm not a gambler myself, but if I were, I certainly wouldn't used something that seems made for insider traders and suckers.

JohnTHaller··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
If it's your remote-in laptop, I'd suggest getting a used MacBook Pro or Air with an M series processor in your preferred 13/15" size and memory/storage configuration. You can get a used MacBook Air M3 with 16GB of RAM for about the same price as a MacBook Neo. It'll have similar single core, GPU, and NPU performance as the Neo and about 38% better multi-core performance. Plus you'll have 16GB of RAM for future-proofing and apps. And you can spend a bit less if you want or a bit more depending on what you need. You could get a used MacBook Air M1 8GB for under $400.
