Joe_Boogz··on Tony Fadell Joins Arm Board of Directors
I’m a big fan of Tony. Everyone should listen to the episode where he was on the Lex Friedman podcast. It’s pretty interesting.
Joe_Boogz··on Available Today: Windows Dev Kit 2023 a.k.a. Project Volterra
I work remote, if I want to do anything computer related outside of work then it basically *has* to be on a laptop. I just can’t commit to spending more time at my desk for personal projects / etc. An efficient/fast laptop that I can use wherever (coffee shop / GFs house / Parents) is a game changer for me. Every Windows laptop I’ve owned has required to me be tethered to a wall socket after 1-2 hours of use. These MacBooks literally last an entire weekend of moderate - heavy use. It’s truly wild and is an experience that I crave for a windows laptop.
Joe_Boogz··on Available Today: Windows Dev Kit 2023 a.k.a. Project Volterra
Previous laptops and current surface devices do support ARM, but IMO nothing MSFT has put out has been serious. (Looking at you Surface Pro X). This targeted solution correctly identifies the main problem with Windows on ARM. Lack of developer support. Outside of internal MSFT dev support no one has taken Windows/ARM support seriously. I hope these dev kits represent a wider market push that ultimately leads to better Windows laptops on ARM. (Ones that can close to gap with the current MacBook lineups).

It looks like this does support display over USB-C - the tech specs have a snippet saying that you should use DP over USB-C so you see the BIOS.

X2 - If its ARM / mobile chip I wouldn’t think that the power supply would be very big. Maybe it’s internal?

It appears the consensus is HN is hesitant about the Windows on ARM push. I really want this to succeed.

If this gains traction then we should start seeing support for windows laptops on ARM. As a dev who prefers windows but has a m1 MacBook b/c of the battery life I really hope this works out.

Joe_Boogz··on How history/tech YouTube channel Asianometry reached 270K subscribers, $5K/month
I really enjoy channels like Asianometry & actively share this channel with friends.

Any others like it?

Joe_Boogz··on Two containers with same number detected in Chittagong port
Not should’ve, definitely would not have had a collision.
Joe_Boogz··on Ask HN: Has anyone here worked on the Windows kernel?
I work at MSFT on windows kernel drivers - not the kernel directly though. I’d say go for it. Knowing how to program in kernel mode is a lucrative skill set. There aren’t enough people that know how to do it.

In my experience the kernel devs are the best of the best developers. But know that working on the windows kernel will be complicated and require a lot of domain knowledge. Expect to learn about it for _years_ to come.

Joe_Boogz··on Apple is not defending browser engine choice
It does make sense, so your okay with EVERY app having the vulnerability then? versus an open market?
Joe_Boogz··on Apple is not defending browser engine choice
Trash? Like, for example, a critical security vulnerability that could be patched quickly vs. one that would otherwise be tied to an IOS release?
Joe_Boogz··on Ask HN: Employee wants stock; what do I do?
Sounds like you have your answer then :)
Joe_Boogz··on Ask HN: Employee wants stock; what do I do?
That’s not what I’m saying. He’s been in the company for 50% of its lifetime. He’s done real work for you in that time.

He feels ownership in the company. I don’t have the context to why, maybe he has helped build or direct the company from his perspective. Maybe not.

Seems to me like you don’t want to give him that portion of the company, so I’d be expecting that employee to leave. Do you want that?

Joe_Boogz··on Ask HN: Employee wants stock; what do I do?
Sounds like he’s been hired for 7 years, or are you saying he hasn’t actually done anything in that time?

If you choose not to partner him, be prepared for him to leave. Ask yourself if that is worth it.

Joe_Boogz··on Ask HN: Google Tech News is usually about video games
Do you click the content / have anyone on your local network that does? Just brainstorming.
Joe_Boogz··on Ask HN: Anyone run a service with millions of users from one home computer?
Mac updates / crashes -> service goes down.

Your local internet goes down -> service goes down.

Etc. there is a reason cloud computing is valuable. If you aren’t able to keep your service online enough or to an SLA then customers will look elsewhere.

Joe_Boogz··on Ask HN: Google Tech News is usually about video games
I think it is tailored to your reading/browsing habits.
Joe_Boogz··on Ask HN: Employee wants stock; what do I do?
Chiming in here:

I’ve been bitten as that employee before. I helped build a startup but my founders chose to not give us stock. We were then acquired and I got pretty much nothing. I felt that I helped build a significant portion of the company but was not granted a portion of that company.

If this employee is valuable you should compensate them. This should come with drawbacks such as sharing the on call rotation among other things.

Edit: I’m not saying that you shouldn’t feel conflicted here, but if this employee is worth making a “partner” and you can’t live without this employee then it might make sense.

Joe_Boogz··on Leaked Amazon memo warns the company is running out of people to hire
Same here (daily emails).

I've been getting enough of them to start seeing that most of the emails from amazon are generated in some form. A generated recruiting email is pretty much an immediate turn off for me.

Also, they have been very aggressive... going as far as the same recruiter reaching out on a monthly basis despite me telling them I am not interested.

Joe_Boogz··on “I think the vast majority of developers still debug using print() statements”
It’s relatively easy to use logging in an async matter. One windows approach, for example, is to set a thread activityId. This allows you to track a specific operation or context across threads / time.

Use with a filtering tool to filter in on a specific area of concern on specific threads.

Bonus if your logging also is tracing and ingested into some big data or telemetry tool.

Joe_Boogz··on Inkdrop: Organizing your Markdown notes made simple
Thank you for noting this. I edited my comment which was originally meant to bring up that it’s free rather than open source.
Joe_Boogz··on Inkdrop: Organizing your Markdown notes made simple
I have always been a fan of markdown editors. A few years back I tried inkdrop and really enjoyed it. At the time it was a fair bit more expensive. Seems the developer listened to feedback and lowered the price. Kudos to them.

That being said, there are free alternatives like Obsidian that are really great. Sync with your favorite cloud provider you are already paying for. Sync with Git. Lots of plugins.

Can anyone point me to the software that this blog uses? Or if the owner is lurking can you tell me what you use for your site?

Looks really good, i'd like to create something similar for my site.
