JoeCortopassi··on I went to production heaven
Industry is massive and geographically nearby in China. If you need to source a different size bolt at scale, the factory for them may be 10-15 minute drive down the road. In the US, you may have to have them overnighted. The amount of raw resources quickly available is a huge competitive advantage in being able to pivot on manufacturing changes and keep lead times down
JoeCortopassi··on Ask HN (again): What is the best affordable programmable drone?
With all the below, you'll have a solid drone with more power than you are likely to need even in heavy wind. You can program it in a couple ways. One way would be to use the flight controller provided, put it in air mode, and balance the signal with an external arduino/mpu6500 combo that feeds the signal to the normal receiver inputs. Another option is you can just go in to the BetaFlight code and modify it to your liking. A third option, is to remove the flight controller altogether and just use the arduino/mpu6050 combo to feed signal to the esc.

If you are trying to use the camera for some sort of remote processing, you'll need a vtx [7]

The thing no one is saying so far though, is be careful. Playing with your own balancing software on a quadcopter is an easy way to turn it into an unpredictable missile with an exposed blender attached. You will get hurt or someone else will get hurt. Do it inside and tether it down at first, that way the only day you ruin is your own

Here's a part list for you ($108 total):

- [1] Lisam-LS-210 Frame ($16): cheap, sturdy, lots of room for your stuff

- [2] Matek Power Distribution Board ($4): easy to run power to everything, plus it gives you 5v and 12v BEC for powering your other stuff like an Arduino

- [3] Omnibus Flight Controller ($25): runs cleanflight/betaflight open source flight controller software. That way you can choose whether you want to write your software on the controller or on your arduino

- [4] 4x 2205 2300KV brushless motors ($25): these will let you add a decent amount of stuff to your platform without it bogging down

- [5] 4x 20 amp esc's ($26): Needed for the brushless motors. They run BLHeli control software, so yet another thing you can fiddle with

- [6] camera ($12): simple camera, decent but not hd quality

JoeCortopassi··on Ending the cult of the CEO
Gabe might not get fired, but his job most certainly can disappear
JoeCortopassi··on Ending the cult of the CEO
Yes, networks are beneficial in attaining any job, but the caricature you posit is a farce
JoeCortopassi··on Ending the cult of the CEO
They may have _ideas_ of what can be next, but the job market is orders of magnitude smaller at that level

As far as having the wealth to get their next venture off the ground, that's part of the negotiation. They know if they leave the company, it will take X days to find a new position or Y amount of money to start that idea they have. I do the same thing when taking a job (i.e. Can I save for a rainy day?)

JoeCortopassi··on Ending the cult of the CEO
Reasons why CEO's make millions and I don't:

- Business Network: If I had a billion dollars, I would never have been able to acquire Instagram. I wouldn't even be able to get a seat at the table. Zuckerberg closed it in record time while talking to a company that wanted to be on it's own

- Market Knowledge: I thought the iPad was the stupidest device ever, Steve Jobs didn't. I now have 4 at my house along with two of those stupid iWatches (actually they're pretty nice)

- Portfolio: Marissa Mayer wasn't paid what she was paid because the board expected her to perform well, she was paid her salary (and golden parachute) because the company was dying and they had no idea what to do. Mayer had an idea of something that might work, but why on earth would she risk her awesome résumé with taking on the risk of a company on it's last leg?

- Access: If my daughter has a birthday, I can schedule an early day to be home and celebrate with the family. When Steve Jobs came down with cancer, he was required to disclose his medical details publicly because of the fiscal impact it could have on the public stock

- Job Market: I'm a programmer. There are jobs everywhere for me. If the CEO of Uber loses his job (fingers crossed), it might be a looong time before he finds a new one and even then it's not likely to be remotely similar to what he does now. I mean shoot everyone loves Gabe Newell, but if he lost his job, what are his options? Not as many as me.

Look, I'm not saying that some CEO's pay isn't exaggerated. I'm just saying that I'm not worth nearly as much as a talented CEO. If the company your 401k/pension was invested in hired me as CEO, you better believe you'd grab your pitchfork.

JoeCortopassi··on Isaac Asimov Asks, “How Do People Get New Ideas?” (1959)
If you work at or are otherwise involved in a startup, here is your key takeaway: cross connections between fields is fundamental to creativity. If you eat, breathe, and sleep software, you will only look at your problem space from the perspective of a software engineer. Startups already nail pre-requisites like informality, permissiveness, and relaxation
JoeCortopassi··on Alexa: Amazon's Operating System
Alexa has a fundamental short coming that stops them from being a robust operating system like the writer describes: the cognitive load in memorizing all possible variations of 3rd party apps on their platform. Siri might have greater difficulty with natural language processing than Alexa, but I never have to think much about the word order or phrasing. With Alexa, I'm constantly feeling like I'm playing MadLibs with my eyes closed.

That being said, the openness of their platform is a huge benefit, and the main reason I have one. I for one am very interested in seeing which improves first: Siri's natural language processing, or Alexa's contextual matching of their api.

I know Google Now wins in a lot of areas, and there is a group of people that have no problem using them, but overall sentiment seems to be one of distrust in giving them an always on microphone

JoeCortopassi··on Ask HN: What current companies have the best software engineering culture?
The problem of 'scale' they were addressing in the iOS app wasn't scale of users, but rather scale of devs. They have 18k classes because they came up with a rather clever way of allowing many separate developers to all work on different features of the same app, without stepping on each others toes. This might not seem like a hard problem if you've never worked on a non-trivial iOS app, but it is a pretty impressive feat.

Facebook wants the shortest possible time between product idea and real world users interacting with it, which is why they also have a solid CI/CD pipeline. You might not agree with the tradeoff, but the pragmatism is impressive

JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ClapChat – Instant messaging for HN users
To be honest, we'd just rather have more bugs knocked out before we share. We take pride in our code just like most people
JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ClapChat – Instant messaging for HN users
No apps for android or iOS. For right now it's just a browser extension
JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ClapChat – Instant messaging for HN users
That's how we have it :-) Albeit with a call to action in the footer of the message to sign up. If you, don't though it will continue to work
JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ClapChat – Instant messaging for HN users
Most people that want to be available on HN have a form of contact in their about profile, we use that to connect you out of band until they sign up, if they choose to sign up
JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ClapChat – Instant messaging for HN users
The main difference is that this enables private messaging between users, regardless if they are signed up or not. Next time you're in a thread, you'll see a button to send a message next to their username. Click, and it will start a message without you having to leave the page. HNChat on the other hand seems to be more of a separate place to have conversations as a group. I feel like there is a place for both, they just solve different problems
JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ClapChat – Instant messaging for HN users
That's the hope. Make it easy to take the conversation offline and help each other out :-)
JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ClapChat – Instant messaging for HN users
Btw, we also plan on open sourcing all this. So everyone will be able to give feedback and contribute. The hope is it becomes a really useful tool for the community
JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ClapChat – Instant messaging for HN users
Thanks!
JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ClapChat – Instant messaging for HN users
Hey everyone, todd3834 and I have been wanting this for awhile and decided to just start building it ourselves :-) The hope is it makes HN an even greater place to find people with similar ambitions so that we can build great things. This isn't meant to be the next coming of Facebook, it's just a super useful tool we like and want others to use with us.

Main features we think you'll like: - frictionless signup. You don't need to manage another login combo. Works kind of like Medium's signup, but with less steps - simple. Button next to comments, easy lookup. We wanted you to not have to think about it to use it - backwords compatible. It works with people that haven't signed up yet

JoeCortopassi··on Create React Apps with No Configuration
My point wasn't to belittle the work, they did a great job, it was just pointing out how far you can go with something like this. This just doesn't have as many of the things people need as other similar projects do.
JoeCortopassi··on Create React Apps with No Configuration
I guess what I was trying to bring up, is that this has already been solved by a bunch of people already, but with a lot more features. We use Gluestick, but others use stuff like https://github.com/mxstbr/react-boilerplate
JoeCortopassi··on Create React Apps with No Configuration
Granted, some things like hot module replacement and generators are not necessary, most of the others are (isomorphic rendering, code splitting, sass, dockerization).

I'm not saying you need those things for your personal react app going into production, but when dealing with bigger teams for a critical app they really become important tools

JoeCortopassi··on Create React Apps with No Configuration
This is great for someone who wants to get started to learn React, but is missing a ton that is needed for a real world production app.

  * No isomorphic rendering
  * No hot module replacement
  * No generators
  * No dockerization
  * No Sass support
  * No test environment setup
  * No code splitting
It would be cool to have a production ready tool from Facebook, but I'll stick with gluestick for now https://github.com/TrueCar/gluestick/blob/develop/README.md#...
JoeCortopassi··on React-Boilerplate v3: The “JS Fatigue Antivenin” Edition
We added that to https://github.com/TrueCar/gluestick. Plus it gives you a cli and much better upgrade path when you need to change things in the future

Was just following the style seen by quite a few other posters to make it easier to scan[1]. The links go directly to the listing, so not much more I can do there.

Unfortunately, HN won't let me delete/edit it to take your suggestions into account.
