JodieBenitez··on Yes, and
Reading code was always much harder than writing it and it's certainly the root of many NIH syndrome disasters. Writing helps, but you're right that these are two seperate and related skills.

JodieBenitez··on A sustainable web career, for when all this blows over
That's like being the amish of web workers. Good for you if you can, you may very well fit a useful niche. But most of the developers probably don't even want this.

JodieBenitez··on SvelteKit 3
I get that, seeing what a model can do with a Django codebase. Out of the major frontend frameworks, Svelte(kit) is actually the only one I would consider now as it seems to produce smaller packages.
JodieBenitez··on SvelteKit 3
Are frontend frameworks even relevant ? Granted, I'm no frontend engineer, but I have toy projects where I only have "vanilla" JS written and read by agents. Works a breeze, no dependency hell. It won't work everywhere but I'm pretty sure a fraction of existing apps don't need frameworks anymore.
JodieBenitez··on Don't couple your Go code to GitHub
go mod vendor... works for me. Also it makes sense for an ecosystem like Go with strong standard lib and strong backward compatibility commitment.

JodieBenitez··on AI Is Antithetical to Learning

JodieBenitez··on AI Is Antithetical to Learning
Another day, another click-baity title about AI. Of course the article is more nuanced than its title, but still... I now learn much more than ever and it's all because of agents. There's something great for learning about a machine that can explain in various ways without getting tired of repeating and without ego.
JodieBenitez··on Ask HN: What default model do you use and why?
Whatever is the default in Codex CLI.
JodieBenitez··on If coding is solved, what now?: Measuring the sloppiness of code
Yeah... like we all get to start green field projects and write all the code we should understand. Many of us cut our teeth on bad legacy stuff with no proper documentation made by "engineers" long gone. At least a LLM can easily make sense of this mess.

JodieBenitez··on My business partner sent a 5K vibe-coded PR that he didn't even test
I think AI is not really the subject. You probably chose a bad partner. As for quitting, since you mentioned gardening:

JodieBenitez··on It took a year to ship WebAssembly in Anubis
It can't always be fixed. Also, I don't use Anubis.
JodieBenitez··on It took a year to ship WebAssembly in Anubis
Except that I don't have these options per employer policies.
JodieBenitez··on It took a year to ship WebAssembly in Anubis
I'm not a fan of Anubis for various reasons but the idea that bot traffic in only harmful with dynamic pages must die. CPU (yes, even to serve static pages) is not free, bandwidth is definitely not free. There's an idea that serving a static page to a bot has a marginal cost tending to zero, but it's never really zero and serving them by millions definitely has a cost.

Also, while some pages may look like static HTML pages, they may be generated on the fly by an expensive and/or slow backend, which adds to the cost. I happen to maintain servers for academics and some content management systems are slow and have an expensive CPU cost. While it's OK for the low number of humans interested in the subjects they deal with, it's definitely not fit for massive bot scrapping. And before you ask, no, it's not always practical to have cache upfront or to pre-generate all pages.

JodieBenitez··on Stop Making TUIs
> Not really?

It is, everywhere I need it. Never had to change a single line across the various OS/Terms I used. Can't say the same for web apps or even so-called cross-platform GUIs. Been there, done that.

> It's not - most terminals are ridiculously slow, and each TUI framework requires its own hacks to do partial "repaints" using ANSI escapes, because clearing and redrawing the entire screen (yes, just a screen of monospace text!) is unworkable.

I don't care about these details. I care about the app feeling snappy and responsive. It sure does. Again, I wish it was the case for GUIs.

> With no ergonomic way to build a menu bar, display hints/tooltips, or even support modified keyboard shortcuts well across platforms? I don’t think it is.

Discoverable as in "you can start the app and figure it out along the way without prior documentation reading". And we do have hints, menus and what not. Trying to nitpick ?

> Extraordinarily insecure, in other words.

Are you implying the app running from my ssh session is more exposed than a web app or a API endpoint for a GUI app ?

Like all things, TUI is not a panacea and has its place.

JodieBenitez··on Stop Making TUIs
> And TUIs are only keyboard driven

Absolutely not.

JodieBenitez··on Stop Making TUIs
> Stop Making TUIs

No, I don't think I will :)

It's great for admin tools, alongside CLIs.

It's portable, it's fast, it's discoverable, it has zero bullshit effects, it's as secure as my shell, it's efficient.

And what is this point about agents making it easy to generate GUIs ? They are equally good (if not better) at generating TUIs using any of the great frameworks for this.
