JimmyAustin··on Ending Support for macOS and Linux
If the rumours of Apple moving macOS to ARM pan out, Boot Camp will be dead.
JimmyAustin··on 28-Key Mechanical Keyboard
My regular home board is a GK64, which has the same layout as the Pok3r, but includes an arrow key cluster (at the cost of smaller modifiers on the right side and a 1U Rshift).
JimmyAustin··on Think Debtors Prisons Are a Thing of the Past? Not in Mississippi

JimmyAustin··on Roam – a graph-based personal knowledgebase
Can you elaborate?
JimmyAustin··on Ask HN: Why is Adobe Reader so bloated? What are the POs in Adobe even thinking?
The PDF specification is 971 pages long, and most readers support only a small fraction of it, while Adobe supports all of it.
JimmyAustin··on Amazon is sending me packages I didn't buy
Visa, and other payment processors, offer updater services [1] that update your payment details with partner merchants when you get a new card.

JimmyAustin··on Apple Co-Founder Says Goldman’s Apple Card Algo Discriminates
It's only easy if you have the ability to control all of the inputs. In this case we don't even know what those inputs are, let alone the ability to control them.
JimmyAustin··on “Is your startup idea taken?” and why we love X for Y startups
Facebook is the Excel of social. It's the bare minimum that everyone uses, can be used as an MVP for any community, but can be beaten in a specific niche by a specific app.
JimmyAustin··on Uber Q3 Results
> Not true in many countries where cash is supported in Uber.

I've taken Ubers in at least 7 countries, many of which have had a cash option (India and Vietnam), neither of which I took up. The average uber driver will have considerably less cash on them then the average cabbie.

> No payment is made in the vehicle, so faster exit times.

Only if you pay in cash.

> Uber uses any credit card, so your boss can pay for your ride without the need for separate expensing.

Uber supports having both a business and personal profile, which you can change before or during a ride. Every business uber I take has the receipt sent directly to my work email, and charged to my work CC.

Jim Keller [1] is widely credited for a large amount of Zen's success. Interestingly he is now at Intel.

JimmyAustin··on From a life prison sentence to a computer engineering job
Protected classes are typically things that people cant change about themselves, which largely doesn't apply to people who have been convicted of crimes.

It also has the downside of not allowing employers to avoid hiring people who have committed crimes in relation to their occupation. I might be fine hiring someone who embezzled as a software engineer, but I probably wouldn't hire them as my CFO.

JimmyAustin··on From a life prison sentence to a computer engineering job
Blocking access to a former convicts records isn't enough. In a world of social media and google, a black hole in your resume of time while you were inside stands out.

An alternate solution might to give prisoners the ability to open access to their records. Yes, you committed crime X, but the records at the prison show that you kept your head down and did X qualifications.

The reason people don't hire prisoners is that it comes with risk. If we open up information, you can lower that risk.

JimmyAustin··on Create React App (294Mb) Compared with Re-Frame (72Mb)
222mb of space on my development machine machine is so little I wouldn't even think about it.
JimmyAustin··on Climate change causes Australia to downgrade Great Barrier Reef′s outlook
Every colony on earth was blood bath because someone was already there, and didn't appreciate their land being taken by force.

Mars has no indigenous population, and seems to be plenty big enough for everyone.

JimmyAustin··on Collapse OS
The satellites orbit would naturally decay to the point of reentry. I'm not sure of the engineering, but it might be possible to do a controlled descent to a specific place for survivors to rendezvous with.
JimmyAustin··on Green AI
The cure isn't proscribing "green ai", it's adding a carbon tax that embeds the cost of the carbon externality into the cost of power in general, then letting the free market make the decision.
JimmyAustin··on Ask HN: Read any good books lately?
I'll recommend this as well. Another great book in the "company exploding in a case of massive fraud" genre is Billion Dollar Whale by Tom Wright and Bradley Hope, which goes into the 1MDB scandal.
JimmyAustin··on The boring genius of how Atrium kills legal busy work
My suspicion is that AI/ML will drastically change the mechanics of how this works. Down the line, if Atrium has access to a million documents that it can compare and contrast to, it might be significantly better then the legal service with none.

The worst bit is that this will cause a reinforcing loop, of more customers flooding to the market leader, causing the market leader to develop better AI, causing more customers, etc etc.

JimmyAustin··on Hedge funds use satellite images to beat Wall Street
When a company gives you access to private information (like sales figures for the next quarter), you have an obligation not to trade securities on that information, as you are essentially taking (or reducing) the opportunity of the company to trade on that information itself. However most of my information is from reading Money Stuff, so don't take me at my word.
JimmyAustin··on Dell XPS 13 – Developer Edition with 1080p and 16 GB RAM
I think 4K panels inherently suck more power than 1080p panels, even if you downscale. Not sure what the ratio is though.
JimmyAustin··on United Nations Expert Arrested in Tunisia for Using an RTL-SDR
The goal of the United Nation is to prevent another world war. Minor atrocities are accepted as long as everyone stays at the table.
JimmyAustin··on Apple Q2 Results
Series 3 and Series 4 watches are also the most visually distinct due to the S4's significantly larger screen. S0-S3 are all identical, aside from the red dot on the side of the LTE S3 and minor (1-2mm) changes in dimensions.
JimmyAustin··on Ask HN: Best Backpack for a Commuting Software Dev?
The Crumpler Considerable Embarrassment. Seems very water resistance, and hasn’t sustained much damage in the year i’ve had it. Pricey, but sturdy construction. A coworker has had his for a decade and it’s fine, minus some fading.
JimmyAustin··on Ask HN: Anyone using a 40“/43” display for mixed dev/TV?
I did this in my 1 bedroom apartment. I had a Phillips 40” 4K monitor, plugged into a desktop, that could do both Netflix, games, and code up close. It worked really well.
JimmyAustin··on Cycling heaven: The African capital with 'no traffic'
For reference:

- Eritrea has mandatory indefinite military conscription.

- All local media is state-owned. The Eritrean authorities have reportedly imprisoned the fourth highest number of imprisoned journalists in the world behind China, Egypt and Turkey.

- Since independence in 1993, Eritrea has not had a national election.

JimmyAustin··on AWS DeepRacer League
I think he is confused by "Launch of pre-orders" vs "Launch of the product". It's an easy mistake to make.
JimmyAustin··on Uber used secret spyware to try to crush Australian startup GoCatch
I'd bet good money that this was one engineer with Charles or Burb MITMing their phone to get details on the GoCatch API, then scraping it with a python script.

It's the cyber equivalent of walking into a business and writing down the names on the name tags.

Complaining about stuff like this gives Australian companies a bad name.

JimmyAustin··on AWS DeepRacer League
I actually completed the Udacity SDC course as well and implemented the same Nvidia NN.

I looked into building my own implementation, but decided against it. I'm not particularly interested in the hardware, just the algorithms that drive it, and the amount of time spent getting the hardware working (not to mention a simulator ) would have been nontrivial.

Perhaps I'll grab a Donkey.

JimmyAustin··on AWS DeepRacer League
This is incredibly cool, and I'd love to enter, but despite having one of the races in Sydney, the actual DeepRacer hardware doesn't ship outside of the United States. Baffling from a company that has a local presence in Australia.

If anyone from AWS is reading, I'd love to buy one!
