JimA··on Telling a Computer to Do Things
I also assumed this was going to be an intro to using AI as an interface for your local device. I love terminal use and scripting, but after experiencing what it's like to tell an AI to do something in plain language and it does it I'm also excited about that future. There won't be a need to memorize obscure "commands" or syntax when an AI can directly do what you ask or even provide a script for you. We might might occasionally miss the old days when we had a unique skill set, but progress marches on.

I generally avoid extensions that can read all sites (even if technically necessary), so use the suggestion found here [1] instead.

What's wrong with the title? Seems 100% accurate, and the article itself was well quoted to demonstrate it.
JimA··on Netvibes.com Being Shutdown
Yes, same company. Appears they really like the name and want to repurpose it for something shinier.
JimA··on Netvibes.com Being Shutdown
Sad to see it go, has been by RSS reader for many years and haven't found a replacement that does multi-column like they do.
JimA··on Disappointed with the TVs at CES 2025
It seems that many don't realize at least Samsung and LG both have an option (albeit buried deep in the menu structure) to turn off the smart TV functionality. One of the first things I did on my new set. It now powers up set to a single input and my AppleTV takes it from there.
JimA··on Show HN: Free mortgage analysis tool to avoid getting screwed by closing costs
I tried it out with docs from my last refi. Tried both PDF and PNG files, both returned "An error occurred with processing your document. Please confirm you uploaded a valid Loan Estimate or Closing Disclosure PDF."

I also at first didn't notice there is action needed to choose between uploading a Loan Estimate vs Closing Disclosure. It doesn't seem insurmountable to have the site automatically figure out the difference between those two.

My name is Joe Blow and my job is a Glassdoor Bankruptcy Advocate located in Antarctica.
JimA··on Streaming service prices have more than doubled since coming onto market
What do you use for a capture device? I'm currently using a Tivo Roamio (with lifetime subscription) and love it, but it's at least 7-8 years old so thinking about what's next. Only real complaint is remote viewing needs a really solid connection and sometimes just doesn't work.

Also a regular Plex user so would like something that integrates with it to handle antenna / live recording.

JimA··on Show HN: HackYourNews – AI summaries of the top HN stories
#1 - Yes, much better!

For #4, I expected it work more like HN does, where it shows 30 articles but has a more button to get 31-60 and so on. At least 3 pages would be nice for those of us who keep reading past the first page.

JimA··on Show HN: HackYourNews – AI summaries of the top HN stories
Great idea, I would also regularly use this with a few tweaks:

1) Main one - Separate stories more clearly. Maybe slightly outdent, enlarge, or bold the title, or add a little more space between stories so they don't all run together.

2) Some articles don't have content available for no apparent reason (Deciphering Mary Stuart’s lost letters from 1578-1584)

3) Filters would be nice (articles >rating, comment count, etc)

4) Collect a few more pages of articles instead of just one

JimA··on Google keeps failing its Nest customers
After using a 3rd gen for 8 years, I just replaced my Nest 3rd gens with Ecobee Premiums. Used to be a proud Nest user, they even shaped my choice of a new home HVAC system to be something compatible. However, they (and their software) haven't changed since I bought them, they are stuck in 2015. Meanwhile Ecobee has been producing beautiful hardware and software that has not only caught up but surpassed the 5+ year headstart that Google/Nest squandered.

Also read Build and I'm sure Tony is just sad at seeing the opportunity lost as Nest becomes a shell of itself.

JimA··on Audiobooks on Spotify
Regardless of the passionate feelings against Spotify, it's hard to dispute their basic premise that Apple is deliberately creating a bad user experience just to preserve their walled content garden.

The same thing applies to not being able to buy a book using the Amazon app. It's ridiculous and there is no valid argument against it other than greed. Not a fan of overregulation, but in this area I can't wait for Apple to be reined in.

JimA··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
I've switched from Firefox to Edge in the past year and it's been a marked improvement. I like the cross platform compatibility and syncing works great among Mac/Windows/iOS. Edge started really poorly but has developed into a first class browser, and combining the privacy enhancements of Firefox with the performance of Chrome.

At this point, not sure why I would switch back to Firefox TBH, unless MS really screws something up. My advice would be to create a seamless cross platform browsing experience that has feature parity across all devices. Keep the privacy first strategy, and look at incorporating key add-ons (could they purchase a Bitward/1Password/LastPass?).

JimA··on Malls adding apartments to offset dwindling numbers of shoppers
I read the title and had a vision of a "community" built in a mail - where you would walk out of your apartment and be able to visit your local coffee bar, diner, park, grocery store, etc all within a mall. That sounded fabulous and something I would be interested in. The article left me disappointed, not much happening along those lines.
JimA··on The Reason for Windows 11
It's much easier to state that HW is "Windows 11 ready" vs saying something like HW is "Windows 10 build 2110 ready"
JimA··on Why can’t you buy a good webcam?
This camera seems to check all of the boxes for what he was looking for. https://thorbroadcast.com/product/4k-hdmi-and-usb-e-ptz-comp...
JimA··on How to avoid Amazon: guide to online shopping
Same story in the US. Back in the day there were multiple price engines that were super effective at finding the best price. I remember PriceGrabber and even Google Shopping being really useful.

I think the affiliate links destroyed them all, removing the incentive for them to offer the best price and instead only serve up the most profitable (to them) links.

JimA··on I Found the Best Burger Place in America, Then I Killed It
Seems like an easy fix is to only sell prepaid burger cards. Set some number - 10x, 20x, etc. the cost of a burger.

Keeps the locals able to frequent regularly and highly discourages anyone coming just to cross it off a list.

JimA··on Scientists discover how to turn light into matter after 80-year quest (2014)

JimA··on The Surface Book 2 is everything the MacBook Pro should be
Well said... Two more I would add to your list of things to fix - 1) Windows always starts out great, but in a couple of years needs a reinstall to get performance back. It needs a way to really uninstall and not depend on an app to make it's own uninstaller 2) Dismal battery life. The article indicates they helped with that on the SBP by using two batteries (plus using an 8th gen CPU), but that is a band-aid. Windows to apples on the same HW and running the same apps have vastly different battery life (provable when running boot camp), and in my experience Windows is more likely to have a rogue process or service which sucks power (although OSX can have that too, it's at least easier to identify and kill).

Just upgraded to a 2015 MBP, and still use Win10 for my home system which is fine there. For mobile tried a new Dell XPS with both Windows and Ubuntu for a couple of weeks thinking the shiny HW would make up for the OS, but it was not a good experience. Was a relief to get back to OSX...

JimA··on The largest Git repo
Non-dev here, but does this replace/overlap with TFS? What was the driver to adopt Git?
JimA··on Vulnerabilities in Password-Manager Apps
Anyone seen anything similar on Roboform? Been using them for years but I wonder how much vulnerability testing it has gotten.
JimA··on Ask HN: Why is IE8 usage growing?
You would hope zero, but there are many Citrix or Terminal Services applications and virtual desktops that give remote users a limited (at least as much as IE6/IE8 allows) browsing experience.
JimA··on Ask HN: Why is IE8 usage growing?
It's because Windows 2003 support ends on July 14th, 2015, and Microsoft is enforcing a browser upgrade to the latest available version (IE8) even for Custom Support Agreements that take effect after that date. So in order for any customer to continue to get 2003 OS support they have to upgrade to IE8.

On the server side, we will see some similar micro-effects as we get closer to January 1, 2016, where IE7 will go down and IE9 will go up due to 2008 having to upgrade, and IE9 will go down and IE11 will go up due to 2008 R2 having to upgrade.

JimA··on Announcing the Surface 3
The WinSXS bloat has been fixed in the latest versions, so the disk space required for an OS is more or less static now, barring any new functionality that requires new files.

JimA··on Amazon Echo
