Jerry2··on CSS Gradients that avoid the “gray dead zone”
So, the "solution" for having a gradient go from yellow to a blue (via a gray region) is to have yellow go through green and then blue? Color me unimpressed.

I remember years ago using non-linear functions to avoid a similar problem in a different field. I bet the same solution would work here and wouldn't look so "wrong". You could pick some non-linear fun to interpolate between values. And you could interpolate different RGB channels at an offset. The reult would be less gray in the middle.

Jerry2··on Ubisoft's unprecedented “exodus” of developers
One of my best friends from college days ended up at Ubsioft Montreal and he spent around 8 years up there. He left last month due to changes in management. About 3 months ago they hired some new manager and this person had no clue about programming, or software development in general, yet she was in charge of the whole team. After a whole lot of infighting, my friend decided to leave after they refused him a change of a team. He ended up leaving for another AAA game publisher. At least 4 other members of his previous team also ended up leaving after him.

I'm often reminded of the old adage: people don't leave companies, they leave managers.

Jerry2··on Judge tosses $4.5B deal shielding Purdue's Sackler family from opioid claims
> amazing telling of the background

I'd also like to recommend HBO's 'The Crime of the Century' documentary. It's a two part docu and was directed by Alex Gibney (who won an Emmy and an Oscar). [1] Trailer is available [2]. It details the whole opioid crisis and the role of Purdue and Sacklers.

Jerry2··on A deep dive into an NSO zero-click iMessage exploit: Remote Code Execution
> Google engineers are fixing apple software?

In this case, this was already fixed by Apple's engineers. And like the article says, Citizen Lab (people who captured the exploit in the wild) and Apple have shared the exploit with Project Zero who analyzed it as well and wrote up that blog post.

Project Zero people have found numerous bugs in Apple's software in the past. They look at all kinds of software that's written by all vendors.

Jerry2··on The CIA and the Media (1977)
In one of the previous threads on the influence of the CIA on the media, someone mentioned that there was a documentary about this. It's called "On Company Business (1980)" and it features interviews with former CIA directors and various officers and also with lots of critics [1]. I managed to find a copy of it on YouTube and it's absolutely amazing and can't recommend it enough if you want to hear about the creation of the CIA and their work from principal actors [2]. Among many other things they discuss, it details how the CIA infiltrated the media.

It seems to me that the only difference between 40 years ago and today is that some TV networks and media companies are not even hiding their association with the CIA and hire former CIA officers in the open as "analysts" so they can push their agenda.

Jerry2··on The Next ‘Lab Leak’
By cherry-picking that particular lab leak, you're making it look like this only happens in 'other' countries. Plenty of lab leaks have happened right here in the US.

Jerry2··on U.S. states file updated antitrust complaint against Google
I find it sad that all this is coming from state AGs and not from the DOJ and FTC. It just shows how corrupt our federal institutions are due to regulatory capture [1].

I still remember how Google escaped antitrust enforcement during the Obama presidency. There was a "revolving door" for Google execs and White House officials who would fill positions at both places [2].

When FTC prepared a massive report of Google's antitrust violations [3], the enforcement was quashed as a result of White House lobbying by Google's lobbyists (most of whom worked for the government a year or two prior.) [4]

Lots of emails were released under FOIA showing how (former) Google execs who were at the White House told the FTC not to bring on the lawsuit. [5] [6]

Jerry2··on Wikivoyage has disappeared from DuckDuckGo
I gave Brave search a try and it did return lots of results for Wikivoyage [1] but the first result was a page in German and yet I'm not in Germany and don't even speak German. English page was 4th down. Still, I prefer Brave's search results to those of DuckDuckGo. I just don't like how much stuff is missing from DDG and Bing (DDG's actual search provider). DDG is feels like a proxy for Bing so if I was to choose a different search engine, I'd just go straight to Bing and bypass DDG altogether. Anyway, give Brave Search a chance! [2]

Jerry2··on Federal judges or their brokers traded stocks of litigants during cases
Everything's corrupted. Pretty much every branch of government is rife with corruption. Even the enforcement is corrupt. Money has infiltrated everything and justice is now truly blind.

And if by some miracle you're tried and found guilty, you can even buy your way out of serving any time and you can even buy a presidential pardon and have your crime expunged.

If you're rich, vast majority of laws simply don't apply to you. Yet there's so many laws on books and many of those laws are so vague that an average person commits several felonies every day. [1]

Jerry2··on Canon sued for disabling scanner when printers run out of ink
Last month, my friend's HP Laserjet Pro printer started flashing "SUPPLY PROBLEM" error message and wouldn't print anything. Apparently, all he did was update the firmware after a message popped up on the printer urging him to do so.

Well, that firmware update included new DRM checks for non-HP toners. The printer would just refuse to work with 3rd party toner cartridges.

I had to help him and had to find an old firmware and downgrade to an older one which didn't contain the DRM. The firmware didn't come from HP's website because they deleted all old versions so I downloaded the version off someone's Google Drive. Who knows if that FW contains something malicious. Also, I had to install Windows because old firmware update is a Windows program. You're SOL if you use macOS or Linux.

This incident didn't make my friend go and buy $200+ worth of original toners like HP intended. All it did was make him anxious of updating anything and of using HP products and has wasted a lot of his and my time. He said he won't buy another HP printer again.

If you want to learn more, search for "HP supply problem" with your fav search engine. Or see this link on HP support forums [1]. And don't update your printer's firmware if it's working fine... because who knows when they'll disable FW downgrade option and you'll be stuck with a DRMed printer.

Edit: Just in case you found this comment through a search engine or this has affected you, I recommend downloading FW from this page [2]. It also has a list of affected HP Color LaserJet Pro printers (there's quite a few models.. the page lists 11 models). That blog also has a full saga of HP's shenanigans and their attempts to block aftermarket cartridges [3].

I find it curious that they haven't named the "foreign government." I guess we can rule out China and Russia because that would have been revealed in the indictment.

Any speculation what "foreign power" they contacted?

Jerry2··on Pandora Papers: is the world’s biggest leak the world’s biggest cover-up?
The world's biggest "offshore" tax heaven is not any of the Caribbean islands. It's not Switzerland. It's not Hong Kong.

It's South Dakota. [1]

Former hedge fund manager and financial book author Patrick Boyle explains what these Pandora Papers mean in a video [2].

There are rumors and speculations that both the Panama and Pandora Papers leaks were released by the CIA. The leak is so massive and so many entities were hacked that only a nation state could have pulled it off. And given who was and who wasn't implicated in this and given which news orgs received these papers, it's pretty obvious that CIA or NSA or some other part of the US IC community was behind these leaks. And none of the media companies are asking the question of who is behind these leaks for a very good reason.

Just imagine if Wikileaks had released something like this... all these news orgs would immediately blame it on "russians" and claim it's all fake.

Jerry2··on When the FBI seizes your messages from Big Tech, you may not know it for years
I'm pretty much the same. I used to believe in gov and rule of law but when you see how many criminals get off and how selective all these agencies are in whom they prosecute, I am disgusted at how corrupt the whole system has become.

Jerry2··on Closest known relatives of virus behind Covid-19 found in Laos
Just a day ago or so, DRASTIC released [1] DARPA funding proposals for Coronavirus research project from 2018. They were released by a whistleblower. They basically outline how to create COVID-19. Incidentally, DARPA refused to fund it because it's GoF research but someone else did fund it. It's a fascinating read.

Jerry2··on Does Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 DNS Block Archive.is? (2019)
>Everything on archive.is is on archive.org. I would say 99% of stuff.

Given how a LOT of the stuff today is behind paywalls and Archive.today breaks through most of them and Archive.org doesn't, your "99%" figure is way, way off when it comes to popular stuff.

Anyway, I donate to both the Archive.today and Archive.org. They're extremely valuable to me. I feel like Archive.today is in a dire situation when it comes to funding so I donate more than double to them each month.

If you're able, please donate to these sites. They are running on fumes. And take a look at my profile for a list of other orgs to donate to.

Jerry2··on Australia media can be sued for social media comments, court rules
>News comments have long since been the most toxic pool of crap on the internet.

Looks to me like every other anti-free speech measure enacted in the last 5 years. Just remove comments so propaganda can't be countered by the people. Only the official proclamations can be allowed.

Quite often, I find comments many times more insightful than the news stories themselves. Losing them limits the value of news sites to me.

PS: You seem to hate comments and love limiting free speech yet here you are... commenting on news stories. Rules for thee, but not for me. How very hypocritical of you.

Jerry2··on Sci-Hub is fundraising
I used to donate to a lot of "tech/free/open-source" related and free speech non-profits to the amount of about $5,000 per year but this past year I ended up paring down my choices and only donating to Archive.org, Archive.is, FSF and Sci-Hub. I still feel like Sci-Hub is the least robust of the orgs and I feel like they need most of the help. I also use it at least once a day.

My only child, a 5 year old girl, has a fairly rare degenerative disease and I've been reading the latest research on it and have been using this knowledge to inform her physician about possible treatments. She ended up in a promising drug study because I kept on top of this field and ended up talking to researchers about it. In a large part, this is thanks to Sci-Hub.

Nothing in this world is free. If you depend on some "free" or non-profit service that you use often, consider donating to them. You'd be amazed how far even $10 goes when put in good hands.
