JeffreyKaine··on Ask HN: Building an MVP without a designer in 2017?
Bootstrap with material design is my suggestion here. Material is versatile enough for both iOS and Android, and it translates decently well to web. The color palette and font stack are both easy to work with.

JeffreyKaine··on Ask HN: How do you gain weight?
I had the same problem as OP. I fixed it by eating most of a small can of peanut butter a day, and working out (lifting, not a lot of cardio) 4-5 times a week.

JeffreyKaine··on Ask HN: Where do you find great designers?
The best designers either already have a job, or are doing the freelance thing. So I suggest that you start with identifying companies that you think have good design and start looking through linkedin for the designers that work there. Next, reach out for a coffee/drink and see how amenable they are to talking about design at your company. If it's the right fit, the designer will be excited and you can move on to a more formal interview process. If the designer is happy where they are, ask if they know anyone who might be interested.

My funnel looks like this: -reach out to about 50 designers -15 of them are open to coffee -1 of those 15 are open to an interview

Note about freelancers: they tend to like the lifestyle that freelance provides. I've had luck with hiring on freelancers as part time contractors that actually show up on site, then gradually convincing them to join up full time.

Insurgency, maybe, but a full out civil war would be very very implausible at this point. State militias are severely underpowered to launch a full on war.

JeffreyKaine··on Show HN: Capire – Private twitter for work communication
Yammer started out as Twitter for the enterprise and soon morphed into Facebook for the enterprise after it was clear that clearly threaded and grouped conversations helped the user stay in context and follow multiple important conversations. Sorry, didn't mean to be inflammatory.
JeffreyKaine··on Differentiable Neural Computers
I think they just want to teach the system to crawl before it can walk, run then eventually fly. Doing something that would be easy for a human to code makes it easy for a human to see what's going on and help train the system to think like a human.

Maybe it's never a good idea at a species/progress level. But it's acceptable that trying to stop progress is a good (albeit selfish) idea at the individual level.
JeffreyKaine··on YC set to launch one-year minimum income pilot project to figure out logistics
Why not give the subjects a basic income for life? That will mirror the potential reality of basic income. You could still only run the study for a year (or five years) but you'd have to pay out for the rest of their lives if you want the subjects to behave in a realistic way.
JeffreyKaine··on Ask HN: Why do links open in the same tab on Hacker News?
I asked this a while back as well. I'm with you, but the community seems rather split on the subject.
JeffreyKaine··on YCs Basic Income Experiment
You don't need to run the study for more than five years, but to get an accurate view of behavioral changes the test subjects need to be paid a basic income for life. So "we need it faster" isn't really a problem.
JeffreyKaine··on Ask HN: Review my startup, iwantmyvinyl.com
Designer/Product Person here.

Product: As others here have said, you are a two sided marketplace, but you have a really strong value prop to indie artists. I'd make the homepage about building crowdfunding campaigns for indie bands rather than the consumer side of your marketplace. You really need to fill up your supply, and that will increase the demand side. This happens because your artists likely already have a following who would want your product.

UX: Your primary CTAs (call to actions) compete slightly with your secondary CTAs. I'd consider using color for your primary and something greyscale for your secondary actions. Also, try to have only one primary CTA on the page.

I'd ditch the categories for now as well, you don't have the stock to divide it up like that. the result will be that your catalogue will feel empty.

Visual Design: overall a decent direction. I'd try really hard to keep everything gridded up though. At 1280px wide, you don't have things aligned down the left and the right, this makes the user's eye jump around the screen instead of moving smoothly down the page. Try using a grid system and sticking to it.

Logo: It feels a little off balance, if you found a way to make the dot of the I the hole of the record I think the logo would lay out nicely and better reflect your company.

Overall I think this is an awesome start!

I've clocked over 400 miles on my Dual+, most of that has been in the hills of SF. I go up a 20% grade at ~15MPH just fine. Best part is, you gain a lot of that charge back on the way back down :)

JeffreyKaine··on Pinterest Reinvents Itself to Prove It’s Really Worth Billions
I disagree. Pinterest is different from other social networks in that it is about collecting content. With content being your secret sauce, you don't want to give it away for free. Anyone can bookmark an image, not anyone can find the perfect image. Pinterest gives you that super power.
JeffreyKaine··on Ask HN: What is your desk / room / general working environment like?
I'll clarify that my wife works kitchen hours, so I tend to stick around the city until she's off. By no means am I required to stay at the office until 11 ;)
JeffreyKaine··on Ask HN: What is your desk / room / general working environment like?
Lol, I'm a designer and it's so predictable...

Desk: 5' by 3' white, in a row of other designers desks

Chair: Aeron by Herman Miller / exercise ball

Monitor: Apple Thunderbolt display 27"

Keyboard: Apple keyboard, Magic Mouse

Music: Spotify, retrowave/8-bit for design work, punk/ska/rock for emails

Hours: 12pm to ~11pm at the office, sometimes work at night at the house.

JeffreyKaine··on In Syria, militias armed by the Pentagon fight those armed by the CIA
Parent was praising Norway and Finland for their focus on leveling up their culture and economy. No problems there.

As for Flint, Michigan... A quick google will give you a lot of info, but the gist of it is that they have had lead in their water for over two years and it's beyond toxic. Their government has failed them.
